ETQW Linux Plans

A forum post on the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Website by id Software's Timothee Besset outlines the game plan for the Linux client for Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars (thanks Ant and LinuxGames). While a penguin-powered client is indeed in the cards, it does not sound like it will be in the retail box:
I don't want to commit to any schedule for the ETQW Linux client at this point. Most of my time is spent working on the game itself, on the Linux dedicated server and on the network infrastructure.

Once those things wind down (in the upcoming weeks) I will start working specifically on the client. But fear not, ATI and NVidia have expressed interest in getting a Linux client early, so they can review how it performs and get their drivers adjusted. When we release, we'll release a high quality product, just like we do on Windows.

In any case, don't expect to find Linux binaries on the retail DVD. It's hard enough for everyone to get gold masters done, there are enough things to check and worry about, I will not place additional strain on the procedure by trying to squeeze my additional set of files on there.

Considering most if not all servers block the advertisements in 2142, and I believe they already can with the QW demo, your being more of a fucktard not purchasing games cause of your 'excuse'.

Does 2142 use Massive? Because Massive is client-side-- the server has very minimal, if any at all, advertising code. In order to disable it in ET:QW, you'd need to route an IP to null.

With the loose definition of spyware these days, I oughta call this post spyware-- it's taking what I write and sending it out to another server! Damn you, Blue!

Spyware? Hardly. Considering most if not all servers block the advertisements in 2142, and I believe they already can with the QW demo, your being more of a fucktard not purchasing games cause of your 'excuse'.

I still believe 2142 is the best squad based game out there. And it's shitloads better then Quake Wars is right now. Call me a fanboi but I'm only a fanboi of fun/stable/enjoyable games, and Quake War ain't anywhere near that point.

As for Linux and Linux Gaming, how many games work under Linux and what about support for say my g15 keyboard under linux? How about MMO's?

yeah. but i have a sad feeling it would be the last commercial game with linux binaries for a long time. i hope not, but i think it is.

It's odd, but I have the opposite feeling. With Linux gaining more ground against Windows it would seem to be more likely that developers (and publishers) will start to including Linux binaries. Of course, we still have the whole directX problem, but one thing at a time.

I'm really enjoying the beta.
A good Linux binary for this maybe all it takes for me to stop bothering to boot into XP and stick to my Suse install instead.
I only use XP for some games, but these days it's so few. Another good online shooter will help.
On Linux I already play the Quake4, W:ET and the TC:Elite mod for it ( great mod BTW - it's a total conversion with great maps and models. )

Well there's always UT2007/UT3 or whatever they are calling it. It is supposed to support Linux out of the box, and whats more it is supposed to have full Linux support for moding/mapping etc, of course that is if you don't mind Unreal Engine/Games.

Props to id for its continuing Linux support, I bet you it will beat XP performance wise.

Excellent, right around then we should get some good 8800 support for Linux so the game will actually be playable on Linux.

Excellent.

I'm so starved for a multiplayer FPS right now I'll buy this despite the lukewarm reception it's getting from the beta 'testers'.
