ET: QUAKE Wars Beta Tomorrow?

The Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Official Community Site announces "the middle of this week" (tomorrow?) is the start date for the promised (story) beta testing for Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, the upcoming multiplayer shooter in the works at Splash Damage (thanks Voodoo Extreme). Word is they will start doling out activation keys tomorrow in a process that will "last several days," and while the update also clarifies that the 60,000 beta keys will be evenly divided between those with free FilePlanet accounts and paying subscribers, keys will be made available to the paying folks only over the first three days of this process. Here's a bit:
Now why are we spreading these out over several days instead of throwing all 60,000 keys out at once? Simple: We want to make sure that as many people as possible get the chance to obtain a key and we feel that scheduling a predetermined number of keys to go out each day is the best way to do this. We're also going to be gradually ramping up the number of available keys with each passing day, so as time goes on, more keys are passed out per day. This allows us to steadily increase the load on our back-end infrastructure, making sure we can effectively test that.

Of course, a multiplayer beta is useless if there are no servers to play on. Towards that end, we've been working closely with a select number of Game Server Providers to get servers for the Public Beta up in North America, Europe, and Australia. We will continue to work with GSPs around the world to make sure Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars servers can be found in every major territory when the game ships.

All these comparisons that people post between in-game advertising and tv ads, billboards on the highway etc aren't that relevant. Mainly because ad's on the tv and on the highway are established and have been accepted for many years.

Because ad's in games are relatively new we have a much better chance of being able to affect whether the trend continues to grow or not. We have an option to influence this new trend. Some people prefer to talk about taking a stand to attempt to dissuade dev's, publishers and advertisers from going down this path. Others are apathetic towards it.

It's quite straightforward and pretty interesting to see what will happen and how much advertising in games develops and grows if we as consumers fail to speak out and fail to attempt to shape the industry we are part of.

Why people need to belittle others arguments or try to sensationalise so much is crazy, but we are gamers I guess

somehow that dosent wash, I mean come on wont you be to busy slaying whatever to even care if they have a real world sign in it?
Oh advertising appears all over the highway and does that mean you dont take highways, or better example ads appear all over the TV and guess what even though we hate them all, we put up with them.

Few ppl say they wont watch TV cause of ads, fewer still say they wont travel on highways cause of ads. and your worried about in game advertising?

Its not gonna make a difference when you planning or trying to stay alive if I got a bead on you and your looking up at that big Pepsi or Coke add crying your little eyes out that cause this ad ruined the experience? yeah I hear what your trying to say . but wont you be more worried that im about to cap your sorry ass instead of looking around complaining about in game ads?

I dont know but I was just wondering, and anyways ads dont destroy a game but bad programing does.

hopefully I woke this clown up and we will all get to pimp his ass on the battlefield, we will all know who he is , he will be the one looking up at ads crying.
please say you will buy it oh please lol we need target practice.

of course you know im just teasing you but serious dont let funky in game advertising ruin this game for you.

Haha, yeah... I think in this case it's a defensive mechanism by all the people who got conned into buying Fileplanet subscriptions just to preview a game (don't kid yourselves, none of you Fileplanet babies are going to actually test the game) They can't come up with a real compelling reason to pay money to play a game before other people do (an unfinished version at that)

Speak for yourself...just because I have a FilePlanet subscription doesn't mean I don't test. I only join the betas that I feel that I will actually test in, so to lump everyone together like that is rather stupid.

Besides, what do you consider the ones who didn't get conned into buying a FP subscription, like me?

Thanks for the info. But the advertising that I just found out is being built into the game have already wiped it from my list. Damn shame.

Not into beta's myself, but I'm looking forward to the ET:QW release. As long as it is reasonably stable, bug-free, and doesn't use punkbuster, it's a must-buy for me

You can go ahead and quit looking forward to the release, and start looking at other games. I have the beta client installed right now (no key though), and one of the questions you are asked during installation is if you want to install punkbuster or not.

I just want to see a company get really aggressive on finding hacks and nullifying them.
The hacks are always going to be there, and if it's not the hacks that annoy you it will just be people who are way too good at the game for your own good.

I would rather that developers focus on delivering a game that is free of bugs, well-balanced, and performs well than waste time trying to stop the inevitable hacking.

Telling general forum posters that "no one really cares what you think" is ironic/paradoxical/contradictory (never really sure on the exact interpretations) because you feel it worth commenting on.

I was also surprised there aren't many complaints from subscribers about 'new subscribers only' to start this off. I guess they're the type that don't mind, after all, they're already paying for demos and betas. Wait for the next stage in their never ending quest to make more money, where they put the first 100 beta slots up for auction.

As someone who's been a paying member for years, doesn't it piss you off that the only guaranteed slots are going to NEW annual members? If anything they should reward their most loyal customers with the exclusive perks. Oh well, just keep checking the website every hour from now to Thursday and I'm sure you'll have some chance of getting in.

I was reading the ET:QW beta forum and ran across this:
http://www.theoompa.com/Stuff/QuakeWars/

a few screenies and some videos..if nothing else.. for you TRIBES fans.. check out the video called "beta icarus".. it will remind you of the skiing days from TRIBES..one of the devs even says something in one of the threads about how you can ski in the game.

Cutter

I expect a good majority of the ETQW servers and regulars to come from ET.. and in ET, I found a ton of regulated servers with active admins.. I think that the ET community in general is more mature and better poised to handle potential cheaters/hackers/jackass players than any other FPS community out there.

Jeff --if that really is your name -shifts eyes-
Fileplanet doesnt have enough exclusive stuff for me to warrant having a paying subscription.. i think most here agree.
Also, we can get our files immediately from Filefront..and at great speeds. In a case like this, we get the short end, but our non-paying asses have a second agenda..
if companies want us to beta test a game, or play a demo in hopes of buying it, do not make me pay for the privilege of playing your game.

read:

Me: That's a nice Audi, Maybe I'll buy it
Dealer: Pay me 100 bucks and I'll let you test drive it
Me: Why would I pay you to test drive something? shouldnt you be giving me incentives to buy your vehicle?
Dealer: 100 bucks please

The one thing I notice is that the only people complaining are the people that don't have a fileplanet account. I have maintained an account at Fileplanet for many years. I enjoy the fast downloads and all the opportunites to beta test. I think its a great thing that we get a chance to test it and hopefully contribute to making it a better game. Just quit the whining already, it really looks lame.

"oh, I am too good to pay to be in a beta", Who cares, then don't beta test and wait for the full game to come out. All I read in these comments for a while now are the people that think they are superior PC players. Honestly people, no one really cares what you think, much like most of you could care less on what I think and will tell me to go kill myself.

Remember when beta testers got paid? Now there are all kinds of fools that will do it for free, but much worse, actually pay to beta test.

I look down upon you and shake my head.

Its the publisher, not id or Splash Damage. FWIW Gamespy has been getting better about not hogging beta content like they used to.

Indeed, most of these decisions are up to Activision.

I can certainly understand why, just wish GameSpy could make it more public. Moving 50TB of bandwidth in a few days isn't exactly something to scoff at, though.

Well my respect for id/Splash Damage just got taken down a notch. Honestly, I understand that they are doing so to take advantage of their infrastructure, but having your customers pay any money (even if it's not to the developers) to beta test a product should appal any level-headed developer.
