XP Geometry Wars on Steam

Steam now features Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved for Windows XP, offering the PC edition of Bizarre's console shooter to far more PC owners than the previous release, which was a Windows Vista exclusive. Word on the inexpensive ($2.50 through this Friday) game is that DirectX 9 manages to reproduce the game's spiffy graphics as well as DirectX 10 does: "The debut of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved for Windows XP delivers a pixel-perfect recreation of the game that has captured the attention and acclaim of console gamers and critics alike. The game has received multiple awards for its old school shooter style remixed for the 21st century with next generation graphics and deep, modern gameplay."

My gut tells me it's not real. As Steven Colbert puts it, if it comes from the gut it must be true. Truthiness!

The first sentence of the story says the Steam release is for XP.

It's going take more than GeoWars to make me upgrade. Thanks for playing!

I got a 360 as well about two months ago. I bought nine games total... all the best reviewed greats. I even downloaded the Halo 3 demo (really, really sucked... control issues, weapon feedback sucked, generic feeling weapons, bad graphics, bad gameplay, etc). I just couldn't get into it. I like guitar hero 2 and played crackdown and gears of war for about a couple of hours each and that's about it. The rest seemed kind of "kiddish." The controls just didn't do it and most nights I fell asleep with the controller in my hand on my recliner. I can honestly say I've never done that PC gaming.

Needless to say, I sold the system about two weeks ago. $700 for guitar hero just wasn't worth it for me. Still keeping my Wii though Mario Party 8 and Zelda still lure me to that one

Not installing vista for at least another 2-3 years.

I go where the games are, man. Believe me, I'd much rather have not bought one (my dislike of MS is well documented), but I got tried of waiting on games to show up months or years later on the PC, or sometimes not even at all...

I've been a dual PC Gamer/console gamer since 1983. Nothing quite like growing up in the 80s with a Commodore 64 in one room and an NES/Atari2600/Coleco setup in the other. Granted, I'm biased towards PC, but I've always given both a fair chance for my dollar.

With all the vista nonsense, I've since promised myself to abandon the PC as a gaming platform. My Xbox360/Wii will be where I get my gaming fix from now on. Well, until I want to fire up Exult or DOSbox.

As for this new "XP" version...I have a friend who, last month, showed me a hacked version of the Vista Geometry Wars that was made to run on XP. He's been playing it everyday since then. Funny that all of a sudden an XP version pops up on Steam.

Yeah, forgot about Mutant Storm. Played the demo long ago, but didn't have a dual-analog gamepad. Tried it again with a dual-analog setup just now, and it's pretty fun.

Between this and its competition (at least, on the 360), Mutant Storm, I think I'd hafta give the nod to Mutant Storm.

Oh hell yeah! Mutant Storm is 10x the game Geometry Wars is. Hell.. maybe 100x

It's ludicrously difficult in some regards (multiplyers/belts are FAR too difficult to build up and maintain, IMO), but whatever -- the base game is just brilliant. I love that old-school 'memorise the level' feel it has.

Definitely worth checking out the demo for anyone who hasn't already.

Between this and its competition (at least, on the 360), Mutant Storm, I think I'd hafta give the nod to Mutant Storm. GW is visually more exciting, but after about 45 seconds, the frivolous details fill up 95% of the screen, and you get killed by something hiding behind all the sparklies. At least when I get killed in Mutant Storm, I see exactly why (usually just that split second before it happens), and I don't feel cheated.

Still, for $2.50, that's hard to beat. Mutant Storm is still $10 (800 points) I think.

That is a great way to look at it - same reason I shelled out the money for a PS2 for the GTA series.

I have tons of games though, but it seems the more games I acquire, the less time I have to play them...with the nice weather, I have less than 30 minutes a day to play.

Damn nin, I know you have said it many times, but damn you are such a consumer whore! If you cut down by half on all the games and music and movie crap you buy a month (media!) you could probably have bought your own house years ago!

I tried it on Live the other night, and while it was kinda fun, I don't really see what all the fuss is about.

Can't get this to work with a dual-analog Rumblepad; it seems fun, but definitely isn't a keyboard + mouse kind of game.
