Apple now
offers an online video-on-demand of yesterday's WWDC keynote address by Apple
CEO (thanks Ant and
Digg). The
QuickTime clip covers the address, and offers all the gameplay footage
included with the presentation, including id Software's new Tech 5 stuff
(story).
Regarding the "Why Mac?" question I would say that it really doesn't matter as OS X runs on x86 technology now, and Id Software have always supported *nix based systems quite wholeheartedly.
I also don't think the reason for showing the racing element in the demo was to say that their next IP is a racing game, but more of a showcase of what the game engine can achieve with relative ease from the developers.
Id Software have always been huge in licensing their engines, and if a license partner can put something like this demo together in a matter of days, what kind of product could we expect over a 12 month development span?
Are they making a driving game or an FPS? That'd be a change.
i'm pretty sure it's safe to say they are NOT making a racing game. i wonder how many others are going to be confused by this footage? seems pretty obvious to me it's just to showcase the tech, and not footage of their next game.
At that resolution it's still really hard to tell how much an improvement it is over id Tech 4. It does seem like there isn't much in the way of repeating textures which is nice. I just wish id's designers/artists wouldn't always choose such drab environments.
The marketing speak makes it sound like the entire engine was built from the ground up with the QW:ET Megatexture stuff in mind. I just wish we had a demo or actual game we could sink our eyes into.
