Ships Ahoy - Shadowrun

Microsoft Game Studios announces that Shadowrun is heading to North American stores for Windows Vista and Xbox 360. We lost our decoder ring, so the s are still a mystery, but here's the announcement:
Time to teleport, glide and summon your minions! Microsoft Game Studios is launching Shadowrun onto retailers across North America.

Starting today, humans, elves, dwarves and trolls can join the cross-platform revolution with Shadowrun at the estimated retail price of $59.99 (U.S.) for Xbox 360 and $49.99 (U.S.) for Windows Vista. Shadowrun is rated M for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). Shadowrun is also part of the Games for Windows. initiative, offering reliability, compatibility and enhanced experiences on Windows Vista..

Additionally, Xbox 360 gamers can get in on the action with the official Shadowrun demo on June 6. The demo will be available for download via Xbox LIVE. Marketplace.

The innovative first-person shooter (FPS) gameplay of Shadowrun, developed by FASA Studio, thrusts gamers into strategic battles that utilize magic and technology. Players must vie for supremacy, playing as a human, elf, dwarf or troll. Cleverness, cunning and split-second improvisation are rewarded through a unique combination of modern weapons, ancient magic and advanced technology. As the first game to support Microsofts Games for Windows LIVE service, Shadowrun gives players on both Xbox 360 and Windows Vista a chance to compete, cooperate and communicate across both platforms with an Xbox LIVE Gold or Games for Windows - LIVE Gold account*.

Shadowrun will ship with nine unique maps and an additional three map variations, showcasing dynamic environments set in a futuristic Santos, Brazil, and its neighboring ancient Ziggurat. Shadowrun includes six training chapters, letting gamers fine-tune their strategy and lethal combinations against the intuitively smart and talented A.I. bots. Gamers can also play with bots at four levels of difficulty on every map and with every game type.

There have been several recent studies that show that the people who try to fight back against their rapists recover much quicker and much more completely than the people who just surrender to being raped.

For most desktop users there's no compelling reasing to run Windows. Dual boot Linux and Windows. Game on Windows, do everything else in Linux.

I have to disagree there. OSX and Windows are (whether one wants to admit it or not) far more intuitive to use than Linux. That and the learning curve if you're a rather non-techy person, but I've been learning!

willing to bet 75% of the Vista apologists are shills.

I'm willing to bet 75% of the people here who say MS sucks are willing conformists to the crowd. Eh? Ehhh?!

You do know as much as you hate to admit it that sometime in the (probably) near future you WILL be using Vista to play a new computer game

it's like the 98-XP switch all over again

Holy shit, you guys went from 98 to XP? What, did you just ignore everything that happened in between the two? Never went to NT or 2K or anything?

Damn...

As for Vista, MS is offering absolutely zero reasons for me to upgrade. Well, I guess the "We get 200 more dollars out of you!" is a great reason for them, but not so much for me.

Got a call today from a not so computer literate business associate who complained that he bought a new laptop, it came with Vista, and now several of his programs don't work anymore. (Most noticeably the company's website and the program that keep track of all our clients.)

So now I get to reinstall XP on his new laptop once he finds a place in town that still SELLS XP.

Yay, Vista! Fuck.

Oh, as for the game, meh. Take a great RPG license and turn it into a fucking online shooter. Whatever. Way to get me excited there, morons.

I like Vista. I support a lot of users at work, and the Vista-using ones are actually so much easier to support that it's like the 98-XP switch all over again... it was a leap ahead in terms of ease of use for the average user.

Hmm dont remember that?

what i do remember is how buggy XP was and how there was just the same BS with drivers it wasnt until the SP2 that XP really worked its best.

Ill wait awile untill drivers improve and at least SP1 is out, theres really no reason to upgrade at this point XP for games and linux for every thing else works just fine here.

yea these people crack me up thinking they can change the industry by boycotting a game. It's M$ people. You do know as much as you hate to admit it that sometime in the (probably) near future you WILL be using Vista to play a new computer game. Unless of course you don't play games at all or you are a hardcore linux user.

same old shit with 3.1 --> 95 --> 98, 98 --> 2000 and 2000 --> XP. always with the whiners

Willing to bet that more than 75% of the Vista complainers have never even used it.

I set up a dual boot when I installed it, and haven't bothered with XP since March because of Vista driver updates fixing the few issues I had had with it. The performance bitches everyone had weren't OS related, they're driver related, unless you're running an older under-spec system...in which case, why are you looking at Vista anyway? Spend the money to upgrade your hardware instead.

It also makes my blood boil every time I have to use the words 'Vista-compatible' when I'm talking about hardware. And then I realize that the Vista-compatible crap is all about DRM and my blood damn near vaporizes.
I'd watch that for a dollar!

According to their website, the game is using DX9, not DX10. I think the reason it's Vista only is because of Windows Live.

As far as the game goes, the gameplay is pretty sweet, but the graphics are Xbox 1 level (dated).

We all know there will be an inevitable official patch for shadowrun to run on XP that will appear a few months from now. No press release will tell you that NOW of course. MS may have contracted to release this game as "Vista only" but that doesnt mean forever. Otherwise FASA won lose out on major potential games sales.

well, maybe it's incentive enough for people to try to "port" D3D10 to XP, however difficult/impossible that will prove

i doubt that would be possible since it was designed only for DX10.. youd have to rewrite the code from the ground up

There's only one thing I like about this game. Because it's Vista only, someone is going to try to hack it to run under XP. Other than that, I doubt I would have even noticed it.

Bitch and moan about Vista all you want even though in a year or so everyone will eventually be moving to it.

my Windows 2000 works just fine, still - but thanks

(ok, there's an increasing number of games which require me to jump through hoops to play them, and others which don't run period, but I can live with that as much as I can live with "no Halo 2 on PC" or with "no Pseudo-Shadowrun")

oh wait...probably the same crowd who thought Halo was something revolutionary since they'd never played an FPS on a computer.
