Spector Woos Hollywood

Woo logs on to Ninja Gold movie, video game reports on Ninja Gold, a movie/game collaboration between famed director John Woo and famed game designer Warren Spector (thanks FiringSquad). There are few details about the movie other than its contemporary theme of ninjas versus the Yakuza, and even fewer details about the game, as target platforms and release dates go unmentioned, but according to the story, this will be an unusual project where neither property takes precedence over the other:
Spector said Woo was intimately involved in the creation of the "Ninja" cast of characters, especially the hero. He said Woo's input on the basic situations and thematic underpinnings of the story puts him in a great position to develop the film property without a lot of assistance from the game creators.

Chang said the film will be more reality-based but still will have fantastic elements from the game. He said the hope is to put the film into production next year, but that requires a script to be completed by then. No timetable or publisher has been announced for the game.

The collaboration between one of the biggest names in video games and one of the top action filmmakers took a different approach to creation. Spector said that typically, someone from Hollywood shops a film idea around to game publishers and developers in the hopes of getting a licensed game going. Somewhat less typically, a game developer will come up with a game that hits big enough to interest the movie folks.

"What happened with 'Ninja Gold' was very different and, to my mind, much cooler. I know that my thought from the start was to develop something that would work just as well in games as in movies, and I know John was thinking along the same lines," Spector said. "This was an attempt to create a concept that would work in, and be developed for, a variety of media simultaneously. That's something new for games -- and for movies."

I suspect this is going to wind up in the same place as Michael Bay's game project.

Don't forget Spielberg's project too.

As for me, the idea has some merit and I am interested to see what they make of it.

I believe that people are cynical because the success rate of such crossover projects has been about 1%.

Besides, how good do you think a movie about Ninjas fighting Yakuza is really going to be? You know, all they forgot is the pirates.

I suspect this is going to wind up in the same place as Michael Bay's game project.

Goddamn, I thought I knew cynical... but fuck, some people here at Blues take the proverbial fucking cake and shit on it.

Small wonder that many developers avoid gamer-forums. The stinking bile is simply gagging.

As for me, the idea has some merit and I am interested to see what they make of it. At least its not another bloody sequel.

My condolences to those with sensitive ears.

J Woo's american movies dont even come close to his hong kong flicks.. "Once a Thief" for example is one of the best action movies of all time IMO, then he brought it to USA and made a super-lame tv series out of it

also "The Killer" and of course "Hardboiled" and so forth

in general, hong kong action movies are about 100x better than american ones when it comes to the pure action: stunts, fights, chases, cinematography (alot longer shots with less editing - so you can really get a sense of the action as it happens, instead of some edited inference type bullshit)

What does Jade Empire and KOTOR have to do with this announcement?

besides the fact that I disagree with the people who think both these games sucked, that's essentially what I was trying to get at

What does Jade Empire and KOTOR have to do with this announcement? Their relation being both were developed by Bioware and JE takes place in China?

See Woody or venomhed for your far far fetched connections there.

Dude, Face Off was and is still awesome. I have good memories of Broken Arrow, too. Mission Impossible II would've been a fun movie if it wasn't named Mission Impossible. Taking established characters and twisting it around was just too weird for me.

But Paycheck was awful, that's for sure.

(Oh and just so everyone knows, Woody's got some weird racial thing going on, probably where his "Chinese and American thinking don't mix" comment came from. Check his previous posts. Lotsa mentions about Jews and Israel. Mel Gibson, is that you? Seriously, man, you might want to join 2007 some time soon. I wouldn't be surprised if you thought blacks weren't part of "American thinking" either. Yeesh.)

I haven't said much about Stranglehold since the gaming press has been gushing over it like some horny kid in Porky's. But that game does not impress me one bit. It looks like it may be fun for 20 minutes, then boring as all get-out.

Too bad that John Woo game featuring Chow Yun Fat looks like total console trash. I can't imagine Spector faring any better taking things the opposite way.

10 or 20 rich drunks that played Deus X or liked Chow Yun Fat and John Woo is directing a new movie, and Warren Spector is in charge of a new game.

Deus Ex, not Deus X.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that thought Jade Empire was crap. What a severely boring, repetitive game...

The Spector bashing going on is ridiculous and unwarranted. I'm excited about the project by virtue of Spector's involvement alone.
