Black Day for the Black Box

Black Box in a Pine Box on IGN reports on the unceremonious demise of the Black Box SKU for Half-Life 2: Episode Two, leaving the Orange Box the only edition of the upcoming shooter follow-up slated for retail. The Orange box will include the full versions of Half-Life 2 and Episode One as well as the planned content of Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2, while the Black Box was to be ten dollars cheaper with only the new content for those who already own the previously released stuff. No explanation is offered for the change, though they do quote Valve's Doug Lombardi as saying Orange Box owners will be free to gift a friend with the unused Steam codes for games in the bundle that they already own.

Wow, tards. I remember when Steam was being pitched to us, the consumer, as something awesome because of increased options and lower costs. Ahhh... how those times have changed. Soon, Steam will be the only option apparently. Can't wait for that day.

They better allow for us to pick and choose what aspects we want to pay for if we buy via Steam. I mean, that seems like a great way to use the Steam-type game purchase.

That'd be an obvious advantage for digital distribution: an option to only download TF2. Except I doubt they'll offer that due to the fact that they can charge you more for things you don't want. It's alot like your cable company and you won't see me praising them either.

Steam pricing might be an improvement for those outside the US, but inside the US it doesn't compare to retail when it stays near the same price for years.

Erm, ok. I bought Episode 1 over Steam for £11 + tax. Most retailers, even the online ones, were selling it for £20-£25.

I always found steam to be highly expensive - even with 2:1 exchange rate on $ -> £. HL2 on steam is still more expensive as I got mail order HL2 DVD for <$30.

Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Got my fingers crossed for a $36 preorder on Steam for the Ep2/TF2/Portal combo. That's why I bought Ep1 now that it's been on sale for $10, in anticipation of a cheap combo of the new games.

EP1 was superior to that in almost every way except for the length

Yes, pitch black parking garages filled with exploding zombines is totally better. The only thing better in Episode 1 was the lack of a Ravenholm.

half Elf, I'm not sure what your opinon on the original HL2 but EP1 was superior to that in almost every way except for the length. I'm not sure I saw many "mixed" reviews except for the usual "OMG-Valve-is-the-anti-christ" contingent who are never going to be happy anyhow.

Bundling got to love it. Just like with cable companies and satellite companies. It's not what the consumer wants. They want to pay for channels they want to watch, not pay for channels that they don't. Same holds true for this bundling bullshit with Valve.

Ok... if I paid say 50 bucks for Half Life 2, and Episode 1 is 19-29 bucks, why would I want to shell out another 50 bucks for half the content in the box that I might already have?

And Hump, I took a wait and see approach to Episode 1. And there are mixed reviews about it. But my gaming buget is very limited, and when I purchase something I look at the money I spend vs the play time I'll get out of game. I just didn't see it at the time (think it was 29.99 at release) being worth the money.

Sides I don't like the idea of paying for 1 part of the game now and another part of the game later. Which is why I held off on Sam and Max's Episodic content until it's released retail and all on 1 cd/dvd.
I much rather have spent 50 bucks on Half Life 3 (aka Episode 1 and 2) then get part of a game/story and have to wait years to play the rest.

If they do choose to release it on steam this way, then I think other companies may start doing the same thing, i.e., releasing expansion packs with the entire game bundled in stores, but then allowing customers to purchase only the new material via download.

Did I say this was a great thing for gamers? No. Keep spewing your bullshit. I don't give a shit what they do with the retail boxes, they can take them all and shove them up Crestons, CJ Parkers, Riley's, Zeph's and so many others asses to get rid of them for all I care.

ROFLMAO, dude, stop having gay-ass fantasies about my ass plz would ya? My ass is mine. All mine. Private property and all that shit, ya know wut I'm sayin' homez? kthx

Will you be able to buy portal, ep2, and tf2 all separately and at an appropriately low price per game? Or do you have to buy it as a package?

Don't buy it you fucking whiney cunt. Simple solution.

You can spin your bullshit about "FORCING you to buy HL2 and EP1" or you can accept that they are raising the price of EP2, TF2, and Portal, because that is all it is.

Consider the extra keys a bonus, and likely an attempt to simplify it for consumers and give them everything they need in one box, and not get home and realize they cant play what they bought without buying another game.

If you don't think Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Half-Life: Episode Two are worth your $50, then don't buy it. I plan on easily getting that much out of TF2 alone, I couldn't care less about the other shit. To each their own. I'm still waiting for Steam prices. Fuck retail.

Well the thing is I haven't bought Episode 1, and I'm kinda sorta thinking about getting it.

You haven't played EP 1?

Your gamer card is revoked!
