On Team Fortress 2 Animation

Steam News describes how Team Fortress 2 will introduce next-gen facial animation technology for the Source engine. The clip is demonstrated in a new Team Fortress 2: Meet the Heavy Movie. Here's word:
We are pleased to announce that the next generation of facial animation technology for Source will be released in Team Fortress 2. By leveraging the rapid pace of advancement in PC graphics, videogames can now match and actually surpass the facial animation used in feature film and broadcast television production. We've released a video of this real-time, in-game, in-engine facial animation in action in support of ATI's launch of the Radeon HD 2000 series. By running entirely on the GPU of the videocard, the facial animation not only looks dramatically better, but frees up the CPU to perform other tasks like physics or AI.

This technology is available to all Source engine licenses as well as MODs based on those games. For more information, please visit Steamgames.com

I was just thinking about the new animation and it being in the multiplayer game...

...I can't wait for the day that a game like TF2 ties a persons speech over the mic to an in-game facial animation.

That's a ridiculous assertion. Intel makes money by having good benchmarks in systems that are overclocked and filled with quality components. CPU intensive doesn't automatically mean omitting another technology either. Both Intel and AMD are in bed with the video card companies ATI and Nvidia for the purpose of selling high quality components. Two are married now. You're so far off base that you sound like you're just making up bullshit to hear yourself talk.

Counter Strike was cool when your mouth would move if you are using voice comms, but you get over that after about 10 seconds... much the same as this really... what is the fucking point of putting this up there in team fortress??? Oh yeah I know. HYPE.

who cares. their facial animation was already good enough for HL2?!?!?

And they wonder why they can't do episodic on time. meh

edit: them not mentioning EP2 in this announcement really makes me think it doesn't have this tech in there (probably too late to implement it into the already largely delayed game i'd assume) They would be retarded to not say this is in EP2 if in fact it is. Then again who cares if it is in TF2 as well ?!?!?!

Valve are getting worse and worse

MRM tech turned out to be a dead end... the CPU time needed to process meshes in realtime was so large, and the visible benefit so small that it wasn't worth it. It took notciably less CPU, and only slightly more RAM, to just keep 2 or 3 different resolution copies of the object.

Intel was pushing MRM tech because they want stuff to use more CPU... that's what they sell. Anytime you see a technology coming out of Intel, it's gonna hog the CPU in some way. They are always pushing new tech (often worthwhile tech) that uses processing power to make up for deficiencies elsewhere. Processing power instead of RAM, instead of a good graphics card, instead of a good sound card, etc. Intel wants you to buy a huge expensive processor, and skimp on the rest of the system.

It's show time!

Oh, er, wait...

I read an article saying that they're going to implement multi resolution meshes for the characters' faces.

About eight years ago.

Yes, because the Source engine is more realistic than a real-life actor

Learn to read. It says...

surpass the FACIAL ANIMATION used in

Nothing in there about live actors, now is there?

Now only if they could update it for DX10 as well.
YES! Lets give them an excuse to delay for 2 more years!

Maybe they will and maybe they won't. Logical thought states they would update the HL2 characters to have the same animation features.

But as I also stated...more importantly this has been added to the engine for everyone to make use of.

None of you have seen how it will actually be used in TF2, so why don't you just shut your yaps about the feature being shown off in a multiplayer game and just wait and see. If you watched the video, the last few seconds is hilarious and reason enough to have it in a MP game.

Valve makes great games. Their support for the mod community has been great. Sure, they can't hit a release date no matter how hard they try, but they also can't be accused of rushing a game.

I cannot wait for TF2/Ep2/Portal. I can't wait to see what will be done with everything they're stuffing into the engine, be it mods or an engine license. Am I a Valve fanboy? Yeah, probably. *shrug* I've liked every game they've ever made.

Well doesn't it strike you a bit odd that Episode 2 is nowhere to mentioned in the article or in the link provided?

I'm really wondering wtf is up with Valve and their PR dept when noone is gonna take the time in a match to watch this.
Unless there is some sort of new taunting system added to the game that hasn't been mentioned.

This will be released with TEAM FORTRESS 2. Now tell me where it says it'll be in Episode 2.
Er, it doesn't, and he wasn't saying it was. But both games are the same engine, so it's quite likely new engine features in one may be carried over to the other. I thought the video looked pretty cool, though I'm not sure how much use it'll be in a MP game.

Man, if some of you guys were developing games we would still be playing games with original Quake technology.

Its all this little things that keep adding up over the years that keep making these games more appealing on every level.

Physics, AI, Animation, Lighting,....keep it coming.
