Out of the Blue

Okay, two more experiences to share from the talent show the other night. One is the boy who recited three excerpts from presidential speeches from memory, Nixon's "I am not a crook," and JFK's speech about going to the moon, and his "Ask what you can do for your country" speech. The funny part was he actually did a passable Kennedy impersonation for those quotes. The other is that the night featured one performer billed as a stand-up comic, and we were treated to a series of really dreadful jokes and riddles read straight from a children's joke book. The thing is the child stand-up comic did original material, and was actually hysterically funny, while the stupid jokes were read by Steve Schirripa, our adult MC.

I'm a big fan of Andromeda, it's highly entertaining, likable cast, it has a plan and sticks with it and it made it to it's conclusion w/o being canceled.

Plus it's one of the most positive shows I've ever seen. Like on BSG we always have to put up with that one ugly chick who suffers from personality disorder syndrome and it's all rather bleak. I like it but I have not plans on watching it again outside the first run. Whereas I have most of Andromeda and B5 on DVD and all of Lexx.

Of all of them, Lexx is the best.

Oh yeah, Farscape is entertaining too but it's pretty bleak and the character constantly snipe at each other. Both on BSG and Farscape, it seems like they'd be much happier if they'd do themselves in. Well, they did do that on BSG so, there you go. More airlocks.

Ratty, sounds to me you don't like shows which are serial or have any overarcing storyline....
Nah, that's not it. Lexx had that and I still loved it. Liked the second season storyline in fact: Self-replicating robots gobbling up planets and stars, galaxies. Farscape I don't care for, and I watched quite a few on DVD. I might like B5 when I see it on DVD. I didn't like Firefly when it was on TV but then when I saw it in the right order on DVD I ended up loving it. I suspect B5 might be the same. I just need to see them in order, uninterrupted, when I have some free time. Or I might not like it, who knows? I'm just not very tolerant of cliched, stupid characters and plots.

B5 - good/excellent to season 4, meh season 5
Farscape - good
4400 - good
Lexx - original, but too weird for my tastes
Andromeda - yep, hercules in space

War of the Worlds - 1st season (1988), old time favorite

What about Lexx, I found some info on that. Is it any good? Anybody know about it?
Lexx is AWESOME. One of my all-time favorite series. Only season one and two though. Season three was OK, watchable, but season 4 was a travesty. It got all campy and stupid. Seems to me the first two seasons had a good production budget. Special effects were great.

Never cared for Farscape. I started renting them through Netflix too because I'd never seen them on TV, but I only got so far before I quit. Andromeda is beyond worthless. I never liked B5 when it was on TV but I didn't hate it either. I'll probably watch it on DVD sometime soon. I have the first DVD of the 4400 on my queue. I've not heard a lot about it but I thought I'd give it a try. You might also consider the modern versions of Outer Limits and Twilight Zone.

Let's see, other shows I loved on DVD: Dead Like Me. I never saw it on Showtime but I fell in love with it on DVD. The first 5 seasons of Red Dwarf of course. Some of those episodes are simply hilarious.

Here's another vote for Farscape. There were a couple of episodes that had me shaking my head, but overall a very good series. Andromeda is Hercules is space. Ok, not quite that bad but hardly worth renting...

Hell, I'd forgotten about Lexx.

I've seen a ton of episodes but years ago. Very VERY weird. Strange universe created in it. Very low production quality, not a lot of money behind it I imagine. It's interesting, dark and very bizarre theme with quirky humour.

Not on the top of my lists, but I'd rather watch Lexx than most of (if not all) the Star Treks, if that says anything.

I already own Firefly, and love it to. And love the new Battlestar Galactica as well (I have only talked about it on here 1000's times!).

What about Lexx, I found some info on that. Is it any good? Anybody know about it?

*edit*
Stupid netflix does not have Farscape Season 1 yet. They have season 2,3 4 and the Peacekeeper wars (after reading Wiki, I see that it to end/tidy up the series after cancellation.)

As mentioned, Farscape is excellent. Great writing, very witty. Andromeda is alright, not super fantastic, but worth seeing.

As far as I'm concerned, the top Sci-Fi shows worth watching are:

Firefly
Farscape
Babylon 5
Battlestar Galactica (New)

Firefly is my absolute favourite, though it was only one season. Great characters, unique feel and the best dialog you'll find in any sci-fi show.

Babylon 5 and Crusade (what few episodes they aired) were both great... it's a shame the latter was cancelled.

I already own the entire B5 series on DVD. My favorite Scifi series of all time. Londo + G'Kar = best acting/story ever for scifi.

Crusades, suck....man that show was horrible. You must have been high when you watched it. And yes, I even own it on DVD...it was like on sale for $9 and I thought maybe if you watched them in the correct order it would not be so bad. They had some good stuff, but it just sucked big time.

I added The LoneGunmen to by Que, it is only 3 disc, should not take long. I really enjoyed X-files, and I enjoyed their characters, most of the time. Anybody seen it, any thoughts?

Two thumbs up for FarScape... lotsa good chemistry amongst all the characters, to me, and the characters are very well thought-out.

Of course, I've only gone through until partway through 2nd season, with bits here and there afterward.

Andromeda? Meh, it was "okay".

Babylon 5 and Crusade (what few episodes they aired) were both great... it's a shame the latter was cancelled.

I need some nerd advice.
I have not seen either Andromeda or Far Scape, and am considering going through the show via Netflix (or at least starting).

Opinions? Do they both suck? Ok? Who thinks one is good and the other sucks, or both are good?

Are there any other good Scifi series I might have missed, like say ones from another country or just whatever?

Also, any good Scifi or thriller or suspense movies I should check out, not any big Hollywood ones, others I might not know about?

Better than the 3rd movie?

We didn't think it was that bad -- certainly the worst of the three, and they could've just left Venom off entirely (for the 4th movie, which is allegedly already being worked on), but still a decent summer action flick.

I picked up SM3 for the Wii yesterday as well (from Circuit City -- they had a buy SM3 and get SM2 for PS2/Xbox/GC for free; never played it, so it was a good deal) and it's pretty fun. I'm not very far in, and the controls take some getting used to, but I'm really enjoying using the Wiimote/nunchuck to swing around the city.

That's great. Besides the Gettysburg Address that was my favorite presidential speech. Its good to know at least some kids are being exposed to some good history education.

Nixon's "I am not a crook,"

Haha. Surprised he didn't have Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" instead.

The funny part was he actually did a passable Kennedy impersonation for those quotes.

They should have casted him for the move 13 Days, where the actor playing JFK didn't sound close the real JFK.
