Warren Spector Q&A

PC Zone votes Deus Ex the best PC game ever, which includes quotes from Warren Spector, who offers insights into what it was like to be part of ION Storm during its stormy run: "Working for Ion Storm was a best of times/worst of times situation. The guys in Dallas were shouting 'suck it down,' to the world (both figuratively and literally) and their high profile allowed the Austin office, where DX was made, to fly under the radar of our funding/publishing partner, Eidos. But I'd be lying if I said we didn't suffer some psychic pain every time some magazine would publish all of our emails or some writer would talk about the marble inlaid floors, the ship parties for games that wouldn't ship for years or an ad would appear threatening to make someone someone's bitch. And, as great as it was working with Eidos most of the time back then, you don't want to know how many times I was pressured to 'just make a shooter...'"

Deus Ex: Invisible War actually isn't a bad game if you've never played Deus Ex, but it's a travesty if you have.

DX2 can't tarnish Deus Ex... it's certainly my favorite game of all time.

"properly and smoothly on the consoles".

Well, when you set the bar that low...

And I wouldn't call DW:IW on the Xbox "smooth". The framerate was anything but. And this was with rooms and hallways the sizes of broom closets.

Warren can go suck a large chickens arse for allowing Deus Ex 2 become a steaming pile of crap.

Shrug. Harvey Smith was head of the project at the time, not Specter. And reading through the past interviews with him about the first game, he had a bit of a laundry list of things he didn't much care for in DX1, namely the overall length and size of the levels. As Specter stepped aside and let Smith lead the production on DX: IW, pretty obvious a lot of those design ideas were implemented.

Go play that on your console, that you love so much, Spector.

He did. The games sold better, too.

And I might add DX: IW required no patching to run properly and smoothly on the consoles :/

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

DX2 wasn't a pile of crap in my opinion, it was just a dissapointment. Most sequals are.

Romero and company were long gone by the time Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 were very far into production. Perhaps, just maybe, if they had been around drawing Eidos' attention those games wouldn't have sucked out loud. (And no, Shalebridge Cradle didn't rescue the rest of the game.)

It's nice to hear some honesty about the ION Storm situation, though I would expect it from Warren. I don't recall ever hearing anything from Romero about what went down or how things were really mismanaged.

It would be nice to have a book about the going-ons behind the scenes of different companies and how things were done. Don't need a "scandalous tell-all", just insight into the development and relationships... but I'm sure some wouldn't want that told.
