KOTOR MMORPG?

KOTOR MMO in development? has speculation from the rumors section of the new print issue of EGM Magazine suggesting BioWare may be at work on an MMORPG based on Knights of the Old Republic, their much-loved Star Wars RPG. The reason for drawing this inference is not provided, nor are any other details, though the sub-headline calls this a console title, even though MMOGs more typically reside on PCs.

Of course it will be one HELL of a game. It's bioware. Their shit is gold. But I flat out REFUSE to buy a console. My favorite game company leaving PC gaming, and as I said, leaving PC Gamers, those that made them what they are now, after such a legacy. Pissed me off good.

Bioware has continued to stave off reports that they are leaving the PC Gaming industry. Over and Over they've said they have 3 titles in the works and 2 are for the PC. If it turns out that Dragon Age is for the PS3 and their unnamed MMOG is a console title, then they were lying through their teeth!

IF they are making a console MMO and IF it is based on KotOR I will very likely have something akin to a meltdown on a scale that would compete with Chernobyl.

Now, if it's a KotOR based MMO for the PC, well, I'll probably have to change my pants several times the day that announcement is made.

Edit: I think I'll reinstall KotOR now. I wonder if Team Gizka has finished off their KotOR 2 completion mod yet.

It's all a rumor right now, and yes, what would this mean for Star Wars Galaxies? Doesn't LucasArts publish that too? Can't see them having two Star Wars MMORPGs active at the same time.

Don't get me wrong KOTOR is simply amazing. However I doubt Bioware could pull off what they did with a single-player RPG in a massively multi-player environment. Let's not forget what made KOTOR so awesome is its nonlinear gameplay and how the game morphed based on your actions. AFAIK this gameplay doesn't exist in any of today's MMOs, with perhaps the notable exception of Asheron's Call. Those of you who played AC know what I'm talking about.

Agreed, MMOs are crap and I don't see that changing anytime soon. If they are indeed working on an MMO, it doesn't matter whether it's for consoles, PCs, or both. It's an MMO. /ignore

BIOWARE GOTTA EAT!

Haha. Kidding aside, if this is true, this could be sooo good. As someone else said though, KOTOR isn't like an MMO at all.. so a KOTOR MMO is straaaange...

Then again, maybe they'll model their MMO after one of my D&D Online ideas I posted a while ago: your party goes into a quest, and can make roleplaying decisions throughout the dialogue trees. For your quest world specifically, the world is changed according to your decisions. Be evil? Be good? It'll all show a result at the end of the quest.

The biggest prob is that you won't be able to see other players (not in ur party) running around your quest world, if it's all instanced in a strict manner..

I have no doubts about BioWare's ability to make a great game, much like Obsidian, but I have my doubts about Lucas Arts. The have a way of stifling their own projects.

First off, KOTOR 2 was done by Obsidian. Secondly SWG is done by SOE with Lucasarts input, and honestly after the last 2 rapings (CU/NGE) just let it die already.

I get the magazine for free and was reading the article, which sound totally like major rumor fluff. Also a rumor was that the PC only game Dragon Empire or whatever they are doing is also going to the PS3. We shall see.

As for Bioware doing a MMO, why not? Mass Effect has shown that they can do huge outdoor terrain, and travel between the planets. Throw in some wookies and some lightsabers and I'd be a happy camper. As for PC or Console, who knows but I think it would be a travesty to have something like this on a console. Then again maybe it's why Microsoft if gearing up with it's keyboard attachment for the 360 controller.

And as for KOTOR 1, I thought it was perfect. Excellent Story, Game Looked great for the time, not overly linear except the start and end of the game, freedom of choice, voice action etc. Which is why when I think of KOTOR 2, I get angry, upset and want to cause people at Obsidian bodily harm for fucking up what coulda been a great sequal.

I hate to break it to all you kiddies, but Lucas Arts pulled the plug on Bioware a few weeks ago. No one knows about this and yes its true. Bioware got shit canned off this project.. Trust me I have inside info on this one.

Bioware released the original KOTOR on Xbox well before it was released for PC. This isn't something new for them.

And in all fairness, it's a good move. The MMO market has been huge for PC gaming, and is relatively untapped in console games... a AAA MMO title for a console could be huge (although I'd prefer cross-platform, since that worked with FFXI).

I've been curious how Xbox Live would affect game companies and their efforts at putting MMO's out for the the 360; without the same front end I wonder if they'll favor the PS3 for that kind of online content.

I prefer my PC to my consoles, but don't sell them short. A good game is a good game regardless of what you use to play it, and the PS3 already supports USB keyboards and mice... it's a good setup for an MMO.
