KOTOR really wasn't that hot either. It was fun, in much the same way NWN2's official single player campaign was fun.
Hmm, I found KOTOR to be far more entertaining than NWN2. But then, I hate D&D and I think lightsabers are inherently awesome.
That said, Bioware's games have never really been open-ended. You have some high-level choices, like choosing to be good or evil but the game experience is mostly the same either way. There's usually a lack of low-level choices as well, since you have very limited interaction with the environment and other characters. You also have very little control over your own characters. Nevertheless, I still Bioware's games (yes, even Jade Empire) to be entertaining. Now where's MDK3?
And the PC port was, to be kind, sub-par.
Hmm, no. A sub-par port would be RE4, where they shipped the game without any lighting effects and made no efforts to implement mouse support into the game.
The Jade Empire port added lighting and particle effects, some higher resolution textures, new fighting styles, new enemies and a fully mouse/keyboard optimized control scheme. That = above par port.
