S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shader Mod

A post on the Ars forums offers the release of the Float32 modification for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, which beefs up the already impressive graphics in GSC Game World's first-person shooter (thanks Doormat). Word is: "Full reflection vector calculations, better bump mapping, real specular effects! All this detail improvement costs nothing in framerate and you will get 20% better framerate than before if not more! Shadows are soft and no longer jagged and the overall graphical quality has been vastly improved. I am not posting screenies as it does no justice. Download it and see for yourself!"

How about releasing a mod that makes the game good instead of pretty?

For me, that would be an instant travel to quest giver mod. I played through the first fire fight only. It was fun and challenging... but then it required me to walk back to hand in my quest killing the high... get your freakin' RPG out of my FPS!

So much for innovation eh? A company takes a huge risks, tries to break the mold and all you clown can say is give me more of what we have had over the past 15 years?

This game is great, and I can only hope that the next version has MORE rpg elements. I get the feeling that Fallout 3 will destroy this game, but there is room for both. Not enough end of the world games out there in a first person perspective.

I played the game without a single crash. I thought the walking around was graet and the envrionment stellar. Screw all those nay sayers that just want Doom all over again, and again, and again....

With this mass of boring FPS, STALKER is a kind of Messiah for me

The go play Quake4 or some it's ilk. Some of us actually appreciate a little quality and depth to our shooters.

Long boring runs avoiding anomalies and through yard trash creatures you've already killed 10x before does not equal depth.

Nice to see when I came into this thread, discussion of the mod is non-existent nor any experiences with it - just the normal game good/game bad verbal.

Oh well best I'd go and download and see for myself.

Well, I did actually buy the game thinking it was innovative... sorry if it bored me and made me feel like I wasted $50 and thought I'd share my opinion. Thought I'd save others the wasted money if they think they may feel the same as me.

Now, I do like innovation in my shooters. And I like innovation in my RPGs. I think FEAR rocks and I think BF series/UT is great. They each add their own thing. But somethings that can be added just don't make the genre more fun... at least not for me. I felt it took away from the game.

@ Bothersome

That is fine. Howerver I have always hated and tried every single Unreal game. It never grabbed me. However you don't see me raging on how it sucks and people should avoid it.

Just say you didn't like it and why, that's all that needs to be said.

I for one thought the artEfacts in Stalker, the atmosphere and graphics, the subject matter, were all great. It did get repetitive but it is a short game. At this point in my life all games get repetitive and some I finish like Diablo....some I don't/won't like Oblivion.

That's where I'm at. I'm tired of the repetitive...

Oblivion = just can't get into it. Very pretty, but dunno, something was missing.
Diablo 2 = I'll still go back to and play again and again.
F.E.A.R. = Previously tried for an hour or two and like it, but stopped playing. Now 3/4 way through single player and is currently my single player game of choice.
C&C3 = Almost finished GDI campaign. Really enjoying a quality game. wishing wife didn't lose my freakin' disk
LOTRO = Can't seem to get into it. Can only play for a half an hour and get bored.
Company of Heroes = Just reinstalled to give another whirl now that I've stopped playing WoW
HL2 = I'll get to the end one of these days, maybe after I finish F.E.A.R.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. = Maybe I'll give it another couple of hours sometime now that I've canceled WoW.

Guess I do have a little more time to try games that don't immediately grab me now that I've canceled WoW

I thought this was funny, I ripped it off of another forum:

Here is the console gamer: he's heard of STALKER and want to try it...

"Help ! The game's incredibly difficult ! I'm shooting and shooting but just get killed every time without hitting a thing ! What's going on ? Do I have to aim or something ?"

Here is the RPG player:

"I'm trying to talk to people, but they just shoot me... Anything related to the red crosshair ? Where can I buy a house ? Someone can repair my socks ?"

And finally the FPS player:

"Er... I've killed everyone here... Er... What am I to do now ?"

How about a blowjob? How about people release whatever they want? I want a personal mod team at my beck and call.

Agreed. But I wish they'd had vehicles in Stalker. The long periods of running across the (empty) map gets boring fast. Or at least a "warp" feature so you can get across the (explored) map instantly.

Oblivion was at least smart enough to let you warp to places you've already been.

Most RPGs cheat and add useless length by making you travel from place to place. It's better to make you do it the first time and give you the option not to again. Sure, you might miss some things, but spending 20 minutes traveling, particularly when you're not certain if you're going to the right place, is tedious and frustrating.

Just fire up Zelda: Wind Waker if you don't believe me. I don't know anyone that didn't take over a year to finish that game, mostly because they'd get fed up with the sailing and stop playing for a few weeks or months. I actually went over a year without playing it before returning. And, had I been able to fast-travel, I would have been much more interested.

probably the reason they dont do that in stalker is because of all the enemies you would encounter on the way to wherever you are going

but yeh, its annoying not having any other methods of travel, especially the way the world map is broken up by gates and shit

btw - the ending is just wacked out super bizzare, when you deny the floaty green dude

all in all, the devs had SERIOUS time management issues - in terms of getting that map to be true-to-life.. who cares? yeh it looks good but i get the feeling they wasted at least a year or two just tweaking that alone.. plus the wasted effort on the AI world system and so on

it just didnt really add up too well, with the AI life.. no one ever had anything to trade, so whats the point in that.. also no one gave missions except for key people - it wasnt that random either

pretty good game, but (as usual) not living up to dev descriptions

There's a mini-mod to turn the vehicles back on. They're not refined at all, and there are some weird physics issues, but it does work...kind of.

Not really anything special. Kinda removes the blur. A little update. This kind of "mod" comes out for every game.

Even if it didn't have the title in the link nobody would really know what's the difference is.

I stopped playing this and installed System Shock 2. I wanted a FPSRPG (lol) but this game didn't do it for me. It was fun for a bit and done alright, but wasn't what I wanted. I couldn't stand the fact that the only thing that made your character any better was gear. I found no depth in the game. There was make believe depth, like how you became more accurate as you got better gear. You could be a stone cold killer, a death defying bullet dodger, and a master at stopping the evil-will of others. But you still couldn't shoot a handgun better than an 4 year old.
YAWN.
Nice try though, really it was, I could see what you were trying to do. Hopefully this sells enough to put out a sequel game that lives up to it's hype and adds some more USEFUL features.
