S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shader Mod

A post on the Ars forums offers the release of the Float32 modification for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, which beefs up the already impressive graphics in GSC Game World's first-person shooter (thanks Doormat). Word is: "Full reflection vector calculations, better bump mapping, real specular effects! All this detail improvement costs nothing in framerate and you will get 20% better framerate than before if not more! Shadows are soft and no longer jagged and the overall graphical quality has been vastly improved. I am not posting screenies as it does no justice. Download it and see for yourself!"

Not much of a stealthie? Wtf?

Actually, I think he meant that HE does not like stealth games much, and Hitman was a stealth game.

Hitman: Blood Money = Not much of a stealthie.

Not much of a stealthie? Wtf? Play on Professional difficulty and get a Silent Assassin rating on every level without being stealthy, kthx.

After the first patch broke save games, I have refused to play it again until the next patch gets some reviews.

Ditto. If they don't release a savegame converter, I'll probably never beat the game.

Nope, it was pretty boring and repetitive. Felt too console-ish still as well. The interface for the inventory/skills/etc menus sucked.

"Help ! The game's incredibly difficult ! I'm shooting and shooting but just get killed every time without hitting a thing ! What's going on ? Do I have to aim or something ?"

LMAO!!!

Hell I have a Reality mod installed no HUD, go into inventory to get med pacs that only give less than half health, its pitch black at night makes a fire fight a real challenge.

Thought the game was easy the first time thru, and the guns where a joke hell my sniper rifle hit four feet over a NPC's head from a crouch!
these new mods tweak that so the bullet hits where you aim if you are sitting still but it gives the same advantage to the enemy’s can you say one head shot and your dead!

This game is good and I am glad I spent the money but its should get way better after GSC realize the SDK and there full A-life and full roam add-ons they have promised in the next couple patch’s.

Am I the only one who thought Jade Empire was crap? Too slow to be like Diablo and too mushy to be like KOTOR. Didn't like the story much though I did give up after clearing out the Pirate Island so not that far in.

EDIT: looked at the Stalker shot comparisons. I remember that place with the ducting well. Skulked up there chucking grenades at the snorks... ah the memories...

- Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar = Played this one for quite a while. Great that it worked on my work PC Reminded me I was back in my A School playing Masters of Orion.
- Supreme Commander = Damn game won't run on my machine. And I've got a Opty 170 @ 2.7GHz dual core, 7800GTX, 2G RAM.. bastard.

- Jade Empire: Special Edition - Just looked at the reviews. Don't know how I missed this one (Oh yeah... WoW). May have to pick this one up.
- Hitman: Blood Money = Not much of a stealthie.
- Alien Shooter 2/Vengenance = Will have to give it more of a read.

Thanks!

Honestly I dont see much if any improovements via the picks in the forums link. I think a few of them are worse, especially the green tiled room, and the picture of the pipes/building. Notice how there isn't any glass in the window in the 'better improoved' one?

I would actually like a fast travel between already visited locations. Like Trades, the Lab, Duty Base, The Hanger etc.

After the first patch broke save games, I have refused to play it again until the next patch gets some reviews. I know there is still some patching needed, and I don't want to wait to play.

Rumor has it that GSC was going to release a save-game updater, but I haven't heard anyhting since.

SO... I have this game installed on my PC, and I wait... besides, I have a lot of other games to play now. I just know that I won't buy their games anymore unless they can fix them in a reasonable timeframe.

Not really anything special. Kinda removes the blur. A little update. This kind of "mod" comes out for every game.

http://img385.imageshack.us/my.php?image=l08yantarnewzh0.jpg

Even if it didn't have the title in the link nobody would really know what's the difference is.

I stopped playing this and installed System Shock 2. I wanted a FPSRPG (lol) but this game didn't do it for me. It was fun for a bit and done alright, but wasn't what I wanted. I couldn't stand the fact that the only thing that made your character any better was gear. I found no depth in the game. There was make believe depth, like how you became more accurate as you got better gear. You could be a stone cold killer, a death defying bullet dodger, and a master at stopping the evil-will of others. But you still couldn't shoot a handgun better than an 4 year old.
YAWN.
Nice try though, really it was, I could see what you were trying to do. Hopefully this sells enough to put out a sequel game that lives up to it's hype and adds some more USEFUL features.

Oblivion = just can't get into it. Very pretty, but dunno, something was missing.
Diablo 2 = I'll still go back to and play again and again.
F.E.A.R. = Previously tried for an hour or two and like it, but stopped playing. Now 3/4 way through single player and is currently my single player game of choice.
C&C3 = Almost finished GDI campaign. Really enjoying a quality game. wishing wife didn't lose my freakin' disk
LOTRO = Can't seem to get into it. Can only play for a half an hour and get bored.
Company of Heroes = Just reinstalled to give another whirl now that I've stopped playing WoW
HL2 = I'll get to the end one of these days, maybe after I finish F.E.A.R.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. = Maybe I'll give it another couple of hours sometime now that I've canceled WoW.

Few other PC titles that may tickle your fancy...
- Alien Shooter 2/Vengenance
- Hitman: Blood Money
- Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar
- Supreme Commander
- Jade Empire: Special Edition

There's a mini-mod to turn the vehicles back on. They're not refined at all, and there are some weird physics issues, but it does work...kind of.

probably the reason they dont do that in stalker is because of all the enemies you would encounter on the way to wherever you are going

but yeh, its annoying not having any other methods of travel, especially the way the world map is broken up by gates and shit

btw - the ending is just wacked out super bizzare, when you deny the floaty green dude

all in all, the devs had SERIOUS time management issues - in terms of getting that map to be true-to-life.. who cares? yeh it looks good but i get the feeling they wasted at least a year or two just tweaking that alone.. plus the wasted effort on the AI world system and so on

it just didnt really add up too well, with the AI life.. no one ever had anything to trade, so whats the point in that.. also no one gave missions except for key people - it wasnt that random either

pretty good game, but (as usual) not living up to dev descriptions

Oblivion was at least smart enough to let you warp to places you've already been.

Most RPGs cheat and add useless length by making you travel from place to place. It's better to make you do it the first time and give you the option not to again. Sure, you might miss some things, but spending 20 minutes traveling, particularly when you're not certain if you're going to the right place, is tedious and frustrating.

Just fire up Zelda: Wind Waker if you don't believe me. I don't know anyone that didn't take over a year to finish that game, mostly because they'd get fed up with the sailing and stop playing for a few weeks or months. I actually went over a year without playing it before returning. And, had I been able to fast-travel, I would have been much more interested.

I for one thought the artEfacts in Stalker, the atmosphere and graphics, the subject matter, were all great. It did get repetitive but it is a short game.
Agreed. But I wish they'd had vehicles in Stalker. The long periods of running across the (empty) map gets boring fast. Or at least a "warp" feature so you can get across the (explored) map instantly.

I thought this was funny, I ripped it off of another forum:

Here is the console gamer: he's heard of STALKER and want to try it...

"Help ! The game's incredibly difficult ! I'm shooting and shooting but just get killed every time without hitting a thing ! What's going on ? Do I have to aim or something ?"

Here is the RPG player:

"I'm trying to talk to people, but they just shoot me... Anything related to the red crosshair ? Where can I buy a house ? Someone can repair my socks ?"

And finally the FPS player:

"Er... I've killed everyone here... Er... What am I to do now ?"

-------
How about releasing a mod that makes the game good instead of pretty?
How about a blowjob? How about people release whatever they want? I want a personal mod team at my beck and call.
