CoH is effectively a total conversion of DoW, yeah? Same engine etc.

No.

It looks like Warhammer 40K, on some alien planet.

I was thinking the same thing. In the first screenshot, the red ground in front of the plane looks like it was just copied straight from DoW.

Dammit. No Russia? Why bother calling it Opposing Fronts.

So the four factions are now British, US, German, another German?

Isn't that color tinting a little too melodramatic for a WW2 game? It looks like Warhammer 40K, on some alien planet.

Playing as the Germans would be pretty cool. Like Pterodon included the VC campaign in Vietcong.

Yup. German campaign too. Since COH is such a high profile/well regarded game, maybe its German campaign will start a chain reaction of other WW2 games including Axis POV campaigns. Medal of Honor and Call of Duty Axis campaigns would be cool.

Strategy and flight sim games have often had Axis campaigns, but COH seems to one of the bigger games to adopt one..

it's getting tedious always playing the same sides (USA & Germany) in WW2 games.

No kidding there. It's also getting tedious playing the same campaigns over and over again. And no company wants to stray away from just doing reenactments of famous campaigns and battles, it seems. It would be cool as hell to let Patton off his leash and go after the Soviet Union, like he wanted. Or if they would incorporate the kind of gameplay in CoH into something that covers the SAS or OSS operations going on in Europe at the time, that would be sweet. Maybe as an expansion pack?

I don't really understand why exploring WW2 in games is locked up as it is. There are so many opportunities to detail "what-if" scenarios almost all developers won't touch them.

That, and as I said before, the player just plays the same campaign, but from a different perspective. Treyarch, the developer of Call of Duty 3, put in a Polish campaign.

I actually like WW2 games as a whole, because they do manage to generally be pretty good. But come on, how about something Company of Heroes or Call of Duty, but with an alternative history twist? I'm not saying it needs to have Mortyr's storyline or the player hunting for occult objects sought by the Nazis (Wolfenstein). Drop all the flag waving once in awhile and detail some of the real dirty raids the SAS and OSS did, or hell, or play something other than a frontline grunt.

Do those shots look that different from CoH? I can't see many differences - maybe it's because CoH set the bar so high.

Well, new vehicles and locations.
Also remember when they take screen shots of those games they turn off a lot of the fancy stuff to make it look good enough for a website. (shading etc.)

It is just the game zoomed in (unless you didn't know you could zoom to the personal level).

New weapons, locations, and vehicles.
Cool.

Man I HATE websites which handle screenshots by putting them in Javascript popups. I like to let them all load up in tabs and addresses such as "Javascript;" don't work in FF

As long as the British aren't given ridiculous accents that could be pretty cool - it's getting tedious always playing the same sides (USA & Germany) in WW2 games.
