Guild Wars Chapters Scrapped, Sequel Revealed

The GW Guru Forums offer all sorts of new information on the future of Guild Wars, ArenaNet's online RPG (thanks Guild Wars Slovenija). Word is ArenaNet is scrapping what has turned out to be a cumbersome chapter format as they gear up for an expansion titled Eye of the North and a full-fledged sequel, confirming a recent scoop on The Inquirer (story). Eye of the North is planned as a holiday 2007 release at a lower price point than previous chapters, and will offer content to bridge the storylines between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. They go on to describe Guild Wars 2, saying the sequel will begin beta testing in 2008, and while characters cannot migrate to the sequel, achievements can be transferred via a Hall of Monuments. The sequel will offer four new playable races, as well as what are described as "radical changes," including an "overhauled environment and character control system, redefined PvP play and retooled NPC companion system." There are extensive further details in the post, and even more in the source of the information, which is the May issue (#151) of PC Gamer magazine, where they have interviews and screenshots (and a bonus "mini-pet") in an 11-page Guild Wars extravaganza.

I never got Nightfall, but I'll be damned if I haven't been tempted to join up with you guys just reading this thread. I also always wanted to get a Paragon build going. I've always had a soft spot for certain guildies which always found me a place to land, but after 6 months of inactivity I'm sure they've since left.

...Sheesh, what do I even have for characters? W/Mo, Mo/N, N/Mo (MM), R/Mo (runner)... I forget the rest...

After i quit playing when Factions was released, I recently came back and purchased Nightfall when a good deal came around. Nightfall has a lot of the elements that made Prophecies so much fun for me.

Just checked last night, and I have put in 1100+ hours in to all three chapters thus far combined (most of it in Prophecies). Talk about value for the money.

Dude, we gotta revive the guild, here!

I know!

The problem is that I'm really burned out on the current GW gameplay right now. I should be good to go by the time the last chapter hits.

Given the absurd amount of value I've gotten out of GW+expansions they've almost got my money right away.

Almost? ALMOST??

Well, here's an excerpt from the link mentioned:
Interesting, so if the model hasn't been working it's not enough to discourage them from working again. I wonder then if this is just another form of waning interest? You can certainly create more hype and sell more copies of a game if it's new instead of an expansion.

Oh, and Com, do you have a link to those numbers you've mentioned?

Interesting. Given the absurd amount of value I've gotten out of GW+expansions they've almost got my money right away. Maybe even for the expansion too. The expansion should hit about the time I'm ready for it since I've decided to take a break from MMOs while I put some time into all the single player games I've got stacked up around here.

I do hope GW2 adds more open environments to go with the greater freedom of movement. While it all looks very pretty in GW there are quite a few areas that basically put you on rails, especially some of the missions.

So, don't be surprised if GW2 has a monthly fee.

Well, here's an excerpt from the link mentioned:

No monthly fees.
I have to say it.

No.

Fees.

Though I'm aware it might change, they seem pretty adamant about it. Here's hope...

So I'm curious what this is supposed to say about their business model, since initially the expansions were supposed to carry on much longer and were ArenaNet's sole source of income. Does this mean the no-fee MMO concept isn't really working for them?

uh, no.

Have you been involved in any of their festivals? They put in a TON of time to give a TON of free material away. The developers are game players who love to create the game for people that enjoy it.

It isn't uncommon to see a developer online and chat with them. They aren't looking to make as much of a mint as WoW - I think they just love what they are doing!

Uh, that's not what he was asking though. He wasn't asking if the developer are bad guys, he was asking if the BUSINESS MODEL is not working. Which is what it looks like. There was a link to an analysis posted here recently that compared sales numbers to cost of operation for arena.net, and its conclusion was that it's a much closer shave than the devs were anticipating because the game has not taken off in asia as much as they had hoped. They have to sell tons of every expansion just to sustain.

So, don't be surprised if GW2 has a monthly fee.

I'm seriously addicted to this game... it's been a while since I had so much fun.

On a side note, the full name of the expansion can be acronymized as GWEN... which is the name of a girl you meet in the very beginning of the Prophecies storyline, and whose fate is unknown after the destruction of Ascalon. Apparently, she will appear again in this expansion, putting an end to a good 2 years of speculation in the Guild Wars community. ;-)

Replay value doesn't come into play on Hotel Dusk

Did you get it? *ahem* when you finish it - let me know. heheheheh

Bomberman (the newest one) is my current fav. I can't get enough Bomberman. It is like Elevator Action - just can't stop playing it.

The two I mentioned (Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright 2) are the only ones that I'm really interested in...and I hesitate to recommend those since, while fun, have limited replay value, due to the story you follow.

Replay value doesn't come into play on Hotel Dusk - just borrow it to someone else when you're done. It's one of the better games I've played on DS. Right up there with New Super Mario and Trauma Center.
