Many good surge suppressors have a built in tester (green light good, red light bad) so you may have the means to test your outlet right now. And yes, the monitors that went TU were connected through a decent surge suppressor.

The DVR is plugged into a strip with such a tester. Also, the old TiVo worked fine for a long time in the same outlet.

And to the most recent comment, I did not choose to change from the HR-10 to the HR-20... this was how DTV replaced my broken unit.

I can understand why DTV wants to dump TiVo, but it seems their own HD-DVR should have been tested more rigorously.

I will always remember Boston (and More Than A Feeling) from my teenage years. First time I heard them (and the album) was attending my first keg-party (which also happen to be a toga party). I think I was fourteen or fifteen at the time so it had to have been the later '70s.

Boston was one of the first rock bands I recall liking. As long as I can remember, More Than a Feeling was an anthem at the old Spring Lake Penny Arcade. The song was played on the jukebox at least once a day all summer, all the way into the 1990's, when you could hear all the pops and scratches on the 45. I have Boston's first 3 albums (CD) and More Than a Feeling gets a frequent spin on my iTunes playlist.

Quite shocked to hear that Delp's passing was suicide.

Another scenario Blue... I used to go through monitors like crazy. I finally checked the polarity of the outlet and found out that it was not only backwards, it also wasn't connected to ground. This outlet was added to run an air conditioner, which worked fine before I got my heat pump, plus the rest of my computer was plugged into it and it never had any problems. I rewired the outlet and my monitor has been great ever since. Floating or missing grounds do flaky things.

I have Dish Network.

I use dish because right now, they have the largest HDTV selection available.

There DVR's sucks balls. I do not even have one.

It is $200 just to get a DVR, you do not own it, and you still have to pay a monthly fee for it, you just have to pay an extra $200 up front for the privilege of having one.

They do not support dual tuners properly either, that is, you can record something and watching something else at the same time, but, only one can be in HD and the other has to be in SD. And, you can not switch it on the box, you actually have to change inputs on the TV. Did I mention the 200 upfront for the DVR plus monthly fees still?

And their on screen guide sucks.

But their quality is great, the price I have for everything else is great, and lots of HD.

Yeah it's a shark...that picture took me back to high school when these were popular.

I bought my first series 2 from TiVo. It worked great for about 2 years and then died. The odyssey began there. I ended up going through 6 (yes six) refurbished units in one summer. I bought another one at Best Buy with the full replacement guarantee after that. When I got the 7th replacement from TiVo I installed my own bigger HD and imaged it with InstantCake and it's been fine since. Their support was horrible. Every time they would make me run through the entire diagnostic routine and I would get transferred up the chain (usually took about 2 hours of phone/hold time) to an "engineer" (not what I would call them) who could actually do the RMA. This crappy support is the main reason I didn't buy the HD unit when it came out. I'm waiting for it to get cheaper and then I'll just get it from Best Buy or someplace else with a full walk-in/walk-out replacement guarantee.

Blue - are you sure that Hudson isn't trying to reprogram it with his cold, wet nose to get more Animal Planet programming recorded?

Funny, after I unfocus my eyes and tag the image, I can pull back 15 feet from my monitor and still experience the 3-D effect.

As soon as I refocus, it becomes formless static again.

Ayup... it's not part of a component stack, just sitting there on its own, not recording anything.

Blue, is there plenty of space around the device? Perhaphs there is not enough airflow and they are over heating and causing damage. Those harddrives are running constantly so you can pause live TV, and the decoder chips get very hot too. Put it on the top of the other componets and make sure there is planty of air flow.

DirecTV is infamous for their horrible buggy DVRs. Supposedly they've gotten better but you still hear comments like Blues. With the new ownership maybe they'll go back to Tivo. That'd be great.

Never forget that night. Some of the high school girls where buck naked under those togas. And us being a bunch of horny teenager boys started lifting the back of their togas up to check out those cheeks.

Blue, whatever you do make sure the tech coming out isn't a contractor. With all the stories of Comcastic contractors killing, robbing, raping, and sleeping on customers couches you don't even want to go that route.
