Halo 2 & PC Live in May

Microsoft service to link console, PC gamers online announces plans to release the Windows Vista edition of Halo 2 on May 8, which will also be when the Vista version of the Live service goes, well, live. The announcement also has word to expect the PC edition of Shadowrun in June:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday said its Live online service, which has attracted 6 million Xbox 360 console gamers, will be open in May to PC gamers who use its new Windows Vista operating system.

The move comes nearly a year after Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said the company's vision was for "anywhere" gaming that would link video game consoles, cell phones and computers, and is a key step toward reaching that goal.

The PC version of Live will debut on May 8 with the launch of the Windows Vista version of "Halo 2," Microsoft's popular alien shooter game.

In June, Microsoft Game Studios will release "Shadowrun," the first game where Live will support competition between players on the Xbox 360 and PCs.

Live members will need just one account, whether they play on the Xbox 360, the PC, or both machines.

Microsoft offers two Live subscription levels. Silver membership is free and the Gold level, which includes cross-platform play and other multiplayer features, costs about $50 per year.

Microsoft's online gaming service has been a key selling point for its Xbox 360 video game console, which was released in November 2005 and competes with Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news).'s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Wii for top billing in the $30 billion global video game market.

Here's the main part that was left out from the Reuters article:

Members of Xbox LIVE automatically receive the functionality of Games for Windows - LIVE, using the same gamertag and friends list at no additional cost. For a single, unified service, the pricing of the LIVE services across both Xbox and Games for Windows is identical. In addition, Games for Windows - LIVE introduces the best of Xbox LIVE functionality to please PC gamers, such as in-game voice chat, integrated achievements and dedicated servers. The offering of both Silver and Gold memberships will remain in place for gamers on the Xbox 360 and Windows PC. There is no cost associated with signing up for a Silver membership. Gold memberships will deliver the premium online network experience for $49.95 (U.S.) per year. Current Xbox LIVE Gold members will automatically have access to Gold features on Games for Windows - LIVE titles.

Silver Membership Features

* Single gamertag

* Common gamer profile

* Common gamerscore

* Single player achievements

* Private chat via text and voice

* Common friends list and online presence

* PC only multiplayer including browsing a list of active PC

Gold Membership Features

* All Silver membership features

* Multiplayer matchmaking with friends

* TrueSkill(tm) matchmaking

* Multiplayer achievements

* Cross-platform gameplay

My take on this is that PC users can only join an existing multiplayer game for free. Hosting their own, i.e. multiplayer matchmaking, requires a Gold subscription.

Anyone want to start a pool on how long it will be before the Gold level becomes required to play online at all? I say within a year.
It could be less than that if a popular game or two were to require it. I can certainly see XBOX 360 games that are ported to the PC using Live given how Microsoft claims it is so easy to port the existing XBOX Live code to the Windows version. So popular ports could certainly bring about the demand to support requiring Gold subscriptions.
