Gold - Universal Combat: Collectors Edition

3000AD announces that Universal Combat: Collectors Edition is gold, though the UC bundle is only going to be available in North America for the moment:
The final game in the long running Battlecruiser/Universal Combat series has gone gold and will appear in retail outlets around the end of this month or in early April.

This title will only be available in retail stores in North America and will not be available for digital download purchase until sometime around the end of the year. This decision was based on the fact that we wanted to release this final title in boxed format. The same format that the first game in the series was released in back in 1996, complete with a bunch of printed materials and goodies.

There are no plans to release it outside North America at this time.

Co-op! yeah!! Not nearly enough games out there that offer co-op. I mean, what happened? No one creates games with co-op anymore. Thank god someone still is aware of how FUN this can be.

Complexity has nothing to do with it really.

Janes f-15, F\A-18, LO:MAC, X3....now those are complex games.....but it all makes sense.

BC3K is just awful, nothing makes any sense. this is one of the only 3 games i pirated simply because I knew it was going to be awful.

It was a great idea on paper.....but then, so was communism.

Besides, why play this when you got X3....serisouly.

Wow 3000 AD came out in 96? *still prays to the god that the nice Best Buy Manager refunded my money on this game*

Anyway... honestly I really LOVE the concept of the game and series, but I in no way shape or form want to deal with the control scheme for it.
I don't mind complex games or semi-complex control schemes but this was just waaaay to much.

I dunno I kinda like

I can't think of any reason for you to buy UCCE

From the mouth of Mr Smart on his own forums:

Edit: OK I confess I may have taken that slightly out of the context in which he said it - but it's still fucking funny!

I went to the website out of morbid curiosity. I clicked the "Read this NOW!" link, suspecting it would reveal something about the mentality of this outfit. I had to laugh. One line in particular made me shake my head in disbelief (is this guy for real?!):

"No sniveling, anti-social net-idiot is going to last one post on this board."

Lol! Well, except for the owner that is. Who the hell is going to read that and actually take this clown seriously? It sounds like something some angry teenager would put on his personal website, not something you'd see on a professional. software dev's site.

If you guys want to get a copy of Universal Combat, you can get it at Amazon.com for a price that reflects the value of this game: $2.21.

As an owner of that game, I can assure you it is still quite overpriced. Looking at the screenshots of the game is more entertaining, and they are free.

are they paying you 2.21 to take it off their hands or do you actually have to pay THEM money for UC?

if you gotta pay for it then your estimate of the value is off by -$4.42

I bought the first game in this series. It was probably one of the buggiest games I ever played. I swore, I would never waste my money on any products he was associated with again.

I don't know any other game developers by name...even the ones who's games I'd actually play

Peter Molyneaux and Sid Meier. Almost everyone knows the first, and I can't imagine there's a PC gamer in the world who doesn't know Sid's name.

Just thought I'd toss those out there

I'd bet that "gonna make you his bitch" comment was just a lame attempt at sounding modern-cool (while hyping his game) that backfired though, and doesn't necessarily indicate a massive ego

I think it's pretty well established that Romero had an pretty big ego. I suspect, initially at least, the fame/money went to his head. I think it's possible the colossal failure of Ion Storm might have reset it. Especially since he's managed to keep himself blended into the background since then, unlike Mr. Smart. For the record, I looked it up and the exact quote is, "John Romero's About To Make You His Bitch."

Carmark will be spoken about with reverence for years to come -- justifiably so.

American McGee was just an easy name to remember. I know he later did that "Alice" game and IIRC did gambling software after that...

Oh come on! How the ID guys? John Carmark, American McGee, and who could forget John Romero! (he's gonna make you his bitch!) If you don't remember them you aren't living up to your forum pseudonym. More recently Gabe Newell at Valve...

You're right...I'm embarassed that I forgot those guys. I'd bet that "gonna make you his bitch" comment was just a lame attempt at sounding modern-cool (while hyping his game) that backfired though, and doesn't necessarily indicate a massive ego (though I could be wrong). I think his games are still more legendary than his attitude. At least he got rich from his efforts.

co-op is a big part of the game's design actually.

I'm no sales expert but I'm sure that constant taunting of and by Derek Smart has resulted in at least a few sales, if for no other reason than to see what all of the fuss is about.

I've been tempted for exactly this reason. I just haven't done it yet.. I may try the demo out though.

On a side note, why isn't dsmart's username green? Or any others lately, for that matter (where'd all the green names go)?

I thought for a moment someone had mentioned Hellbender and Terminal Velocity in the same thread. I was going to faint.

What was the deal there, BTW? One was published by MS (HB) and one not (TV)? They looked identical from the screenshots on the box...
