Portal/Half-Life 2 Clarification

Planet Half-Life has a story up clarifying that Portal in Half-Life 2: Episode Two is a separate game from Half-Life 2 that does not exist within the Half-Life continuity (thanks Ant). This strikes us as how the project was described from the get-go, but in case there was any confusion, they distill a couple of recent interviews to clarify the situation:
With Portal co-existing in a world along with Half-Life, crossovers are a definite possibility. Unfortunately, according to Kim Swift, we won't be seeing any Portal gun versus Gravity gun duels in the foreseeable future. Rumors surrounding the device's name, "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device" suggested the return of another Half-Life character, Adrian Shephard. Adrian, the central character to Opposing Force, meets a similar fate to Gordon Freeman under the G-Man. Though the sequel to Half-Life continues Gordon's story, the whereabouts and condition of Adrian is still relatively unknown.

Honestly? I'd like to see Half-Life 2: Blue Shift. Get an idea what Barney's been up to this whole time - maybe get a chance at some different playstyles. I doubt Barney's personality is really conducive to "stealth" gameplay or anything like that, but his undercover position as a Metrocop opens up a number of exciting possibilities.

That would be awesome...

More Valve lameness, not like they could implement the “portal gun” into the game somehow for multiplayer, even if it were to take on different characteristics than allowing you to zap through walls.

Someone will probably mod it in anyway.

Adrian who? Opposing Force? Yeah I played it but man it's a serious stretch to think most people are following the “story” that closely.

That is a really good idea! Seeing a fully fleshed (single, only one) Barney in Half-life 2 was one of the coolest things (though not a huge surprise after Blue Shift).

Half-life 2: Blue Shift would be awesome - no gravity gun, but he can still lift up boxes, flip switches, be undercover, lead soldiers, shoot bad guys, etc. - that'd be great!

Barney? The dinosaur?

You mean there is a story? All this time all I have been doing was following Alyx Vance's bottom. Its quite hypnotic really. Perhaps its a portal.

I'll refrain from obvious comments...

Yeh a Barney sequel would be good. Though a 'shoot the friendly resistance fighter or blow your cover' scenario would be pretty hardcore, not sure Valve would do it.

as Blue said this is kind of a non-story as theres not a single article or interview that implied that the two games would ever crossover or one weapon would show up in another. All that was said it exists in the same universe but even that statement was made long ago when Portal was first announced and never again since.

then again, given the way people blow shit out of proportion I can't blame them for clearing things up just in case....

LOL! This was simply an excuse to keep the game in the news since it is still fairly far from release. Only the Valve lapdogs care about any continuity amongst the games so this was also a bone thrown to them.

I'm calling BS. This is a cover story.

In Portal, you play as the goddamn GMAN. How the hell do you think he got around like that? Well, you get to play a movement simulator to find out.

I fail to see how the name "Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device" suggested Adrian Shephard's return as the story claims. Who started that rumor?

Hrm, the gravity gun was the best part of HL2. Take that away and there's not much left.

First letter of each word: A SHPD. Adrian Shepard? That's a really, really, really big stretch though. Totally agree that anyone that would think of that is pushing it.

Jesus christ, get over yourself Riley. These were interviews from websites...its not like Valve released some press release to announce this. This was probably submitted to Blues by the sites to generate more hits on their own sites. Nothing more nothing less. If you don't care about Valve or their games why do you insist on making negative comments regarding them? Not much of a life you have going there eh?

Just after Valve acquired the team that created Portal, Gabe did a video interview. And he sure did mention incorporating Portal into HL. He specifically mentioned an area in the original HL where you overhear two scientists talking before blowing themselves up, thus allowing you to get the gauss gun and how that area could play into Aperture Science.

Valve clearing something up?.... No. They've changed their minds. Should anyone give a damn?.... No. It's a videogame and so far, all of theirs have been a lot of fun.

Why should I? You obviously haven't.

No, a Valve employee, Kim Swift, announced it in a conference at GDC with fellow game professionals that was reported on several major gaming websites including this one. Sure, I don't think it was newsworthy, but obviously some people did including Blue.

If you don't care about Valve or their games why do you insist on making negative comments regarding them?
Because the opportunity presented it, and I obviously enjoy it.

Not much of a life you have going there eh?
The few minutes at most it took me to write that post certainly didn't keep me from the rest of my activities. Plus, you are absolutely the last person who should be making that charge since my continual criticism of Valve is certainly no worse than yours of me.

The portal gun and the grav gun in the same game? Whoa... That would be badass!

I can just see it now, some guy with a grav gun is carrying a big crate and is about to crush a guy carrying a portal gun, when suddenly the portal guy opens a hole under him. In true roadrunner style, the exit portal is out over a cliff and the grav guys death is certain; but the crate saves his life as he is now suspended by the grav gun all because the crate won't fit though the entry portal.

At least not until the portal guy says "C-Yuh! Wouldn't wanna be-yuh." and smashes the crate.

That sounds a lot like Contract JACK for the NOLF series. Take away all the stealth and non-combat stuff, and that's the game you get. But wait, didn't most people hate Contract JACK and Blue Shift?

If they do a Blue Shift 2, they should make it a little more interesting. People already criticized Episode 1, saying it didn't bring anything new. What do you think they would say about Blue Shift 2?
