Steam Plans

This week's Steam Marketing Message has word that pre-purchases of Silverfall on Steam are now underway for those eager to try before they buy, though of course a demo for Monte Cristo's now-gold action/RPG does provide a sample (story). Valve also says they will be making an announcement about additional games coming to Steam soon:
Many of us are away at the Game Developers Conference this week, scouting for new great games to bring to Steam. Speaking of which, stay tuned for an announcement next week about a major new publisher catalog coming your way.

That metaphor was disturbingly explicit. As soon as I see Steam, I think Valve and then I think Gabe Newell and... well, you probably already have an image in your head.

I only hope that the same market will exist when your son is your age, but if the lemmings who suckle on the teat of Steam and its ilk have their way, it won't exist.

Ahh yes all the Americans come put to be patriotic in an internet forum but when the crunch comes to stand up against their own government (this happens to be a global issue since you all have your hands in our cookie jars), back to the armchair

Why on earth would I stand up against my government (of which I am a part) when I see no need for revolution? If I disagree with any given politician's stance, I'll vote him out when he runs for reelection.

Also, in today's global economy, we ALL have hands in each other's "cookie jars," so don't whine about how America was evil enough to prosper and maintain a robust economy. Where are you from, anyway? Why the knee-jerk anti-Americanism?

Oh, and to spare you the trouble, don't merely label me some mindless Bush supporter as internet liberals seem to love to attempt in order to distract people away from the fact they have no argument. For the record, I largely disagree with Bush on many issues, but he is better than the alternatives we were given.

Oh well, enough of all that. The real issue here is your vacuous statement and the attempt to deflect criticism using an irrelevant regurgitated political cliche.

I guess I'm the only one who has roughly 250 NES games still in their original boxes with pristine manuals ready to be sold by my son on ebay once he gets old enough to realize what his dad has
You are not the only one who values video games as more than just consumable entertainment but also as collectable items that can be sold and traded. I only hope that the same market will exist when your son is your age, but if the lemmings who suckle on the teat of Steam and its ilk have their way, it won't exist.

I get paid quite well for doing nothing in a job I didn't even have to earn. It's called being born into a thick bloodline.

So basically you've never done anything great with your life because nothing great has been demanded of you? That's not something I'd brag about; in fact, there is nothing more pitiful than inherited privilege.

I stand by that; I genuinely pity you. How can one have a sense of worth if they haven't earned anything based on their own merits, and admit to doing "very little"?

Only an American would think that life centers around money and when they have it they think they are the bee's knees.

So am I to take it that the rest of the world works for charity? Don't lump us all in with that loser.

Seriously... Can't Non-Americans come up with a better insult than to just call us Americans? For your information, the guy you're insulting is a prick. We all know that. Even us Americans. And one more thing, we're not all like him.

Thanks.

Valve has allowed retail copies of other games to be activated through Steam, so it might still be possible. There's no reason they shouldn't allow it and obviously you cannot be expected to purchase the game again.

Wrong I have a garage load of 80's and games AND games consoles that you never heard off back from the time of a proliferation of home brew machines, the problem is, nobody wants the games. Remember the Amiga, people EMULATE that, same for the NES, tech is fast enough to do that you know. Nobody wants the hassle of finding compatible TV' to connect them to.

Newsflash, the games arnt worth diddly and anyway the media degrades.

Keep dreaming that dream of getting rich on your old "tech" junk.

Wow, you have read older posts of mine where I basically trumpet the merits of emulation and have been flamed/trolled/insulted for being an emulation lover, right? Kid, I've been into the emulation community since 1995, I think I know a thing or two about it. Heck, you can see two of my NES hacks on Zophar's domain, and they've been there since the site's glory days in 98.

As for getting rich off of my old stuff, Actually, on ebay, old games go for a lot if they are kept up. I sold Panzer Dragoon Saga (for the Sega Saturn) for 180 bucks on ebay last year. I sold River city ransom for HALF that. It was pristine as well. Clean box, untouched manual, even smelled new.

I saw a friend sell snatcher for the Sega CD for 120 three months ago. So I don't really see what you mean.

But uhhh, Moo baby. Here's the real kicker here kid...you are a burger flipper just like every other blues devotee. Another wet stain on your Burger King uniform and you'll get demoted to fry cook, am I right?

I love tormenting Blues-ites because they think they're special.

As for getting rich, I'm a F&AM. I get paid quite well for doing nothing in a job I didn't even have to earn. It's called being born into a thick bloodline. Something you aren't terribly familiar with I assume. Flame, troll, bite your lip...it will do you no good. Because behind the monitor little child...we both know what's there.

Keep dreaming, Moobaby. Keep dreaming.

He's right, you know. Not about the compatible TVs. I don't know where that one came from. But the games really aren't worth shit except for nostalgia reasons. Which may be enough.

However, once Steam started charging more for games than I can pay at retail and which I don't have to wait a couple of months to get in the UK then I went off them pretty quick. By then I'd accumulated a couple of hundred dollars worth of games on my account and it occured to me that that was quite an investment in games that I couldn't even lend out or sell. And I was a big advocate of Steam originally.

What do you do after you install the game and image the disc? Nothing it just sits there being wasted. Thats what happens to mine.

Save them for my collection, what else?

I have boxes and manuals dating back to the mid 80's. The earliest of which is Pool of Radiance for my commodore 64...the game that made me a PC Gamer.

I guess I'm the only one who has roughly 250 NES games still in their original boxes with pristine manuals ready to be sold by my son on ebay once he gets old enough to realize what his dad has?

Ehhh...maybe so.

I have some games, that i got in the retail channel but I am unable to activate it for the Steam version.

Their pricing is not compatible with that scenario, the developer doesnt want us to steam enable our retail copy which sucks. I wouldnt even mind paying a small token just to get the Steam enabled version but no Im not paying 19.99 USD plus whatever tax they use (I assume its the country's tax the CC is for in which case I have a choice and pick the lowest taxable one).

Since the price of this is higher than the retail channel discounts now I wont pay for a steam enabled copy. If they reduce it, perhaps I will.

They really need to work on their pricing plans.
