Half-Life 2: Episode Two to be Longer (Too)

Just wanted to set a record for "two" homophones in one headline. Anyway, Valve: Half-Life 2 Episode 2 Will Be Longer on Fringe Drinking (thanks xXBatmanXx) has word from Valve's Doug Lombardi that Half-Life 2: Episode Two will offer about eight hours of gameplay, compared with the approximately six hours of gameplay in episode one, and offers details on planned Steam features that will enhance its community support. Doug also says that in spite of Episode 2's delayed release, their development cycle for episodic content is getting shorter:
"Episode 1 took 18 months to complete and Episode 2 will end up being about 13 to 14 months, so we’re trimming it down," he said. "I think we’ll get closer to a year and be on a 12 month cycle. We’ll see how it goes after this trilogy is done."

I have to agree that, with games as a whole, I HATE when people whine about delays. Yes, there are exceptions, DNF, STALKER, but for the most part delays are a good thing. The same people whine just as much when games come out unfinished and need major patching and whine when a game is announced without a release date. I'd rather devs be overzealous with their timetable and apologize for delays than overzealous with their timetable and apologize for unfinished games.

Anyway, according to the E1 stats it was a 5 hour 41 minute game. But the average playtime was 4 hours 6 minutes. I definitely finished the game quicker. But I always finish ahead of estimates. I'd imagine most Bluesnews posters do.

What's most interesting about all of this is how Valve is backing off of episodic gaming. They're committing to this trilogy, then seeing how it goes. Compare that to Gabe Newell 18 months ago. Back then this was the future of HL, with these three games being HL3. He repeatedly called these episodes HL3. He repeatedly said HL was an episodic game from now on.

You don't see ANYONE saying any of that anymore. Their commitment to episodic gaming is down to these three, then they plan to reevaluate.
