Ships Ahoy - Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike

The Battlefield Website has word that the Northern Strike booster pack for Battlefield 2142 is now available for online purchase and download. Word is:
Emphasizing close-quarters combat, Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike features the new Conquest Assault game mode, and three new maps, including the infamous WWII battle scene at the Bridge at Remagen, an Alpine Titan docking harbour in Port Bavaria and a claustrophobic showdown in the Liberation of Leipzig. The booster pack also features new vehicles including the EU's heavily armed IFV Goliath and the PAC's hovering light IFV Hachimoto in addition to new persistence, new gameplay and more.

I approve of this. Worth $10? Hmm... maybe $5. But ah well.
I disapprove of several aspects of the new maps though. From what I can tell, nearly all the vehicles of the game have been removed EXCEPT the Walker and the jeep! No aircraft at all.

The Goliath is really cool. It has energy cells on it that can be specifically targetted so that the Goliath is easier to kill. The Hachimoto is sweet too, and has a very Battlezone 2-ish hovertank feel to it.

Some of the maps seem to run considerably worse than the standard maps. So if you have problems with framerate in 2142, you might want to stay clear of the booster. My computer sucks

So you can now play a WW2 map in the sequel to the sequel to BF1942?
Why don't they release it as a BF1942 or BF2 map then?
Weird.

Probably cause this is their newest game.. and they want new players for it.. It may have been some BF42 map that never made it, where the gameplay worked better in 2142..

Looking forward to trying it out later. Disappointing about the removal of some vehicles, but that just means it's more infantry focused which isn't a bad thing.

Bridge at Remagen does have air vehicles.

Does this booster do anything to enhance the existing maps? I can't understand why they don't build in support for players to choose to use newer vehicles in the old maps.

They could just rework all the old maps with new vehicles and make them part of the booster. Doubling the maps choices!

They'll learn someday...

Battlefield Bad Company has me pretty excited, fully destructable environments are long over due.

I haven't been following the news on this too closely, but are there any plans for a retail boxed version to be released? From this press release it sounds like not.

Six new images of the booster pack: http://www.gameplaymonthly.com/screens/bf2142exp.php

From everything EA is saying, this is a digital download only.

There will be a box in stores but there will not be a CD or DVD inside the case but just a download code. So it's a hybrid between digital download and boxed release, really.

downloaded it, played it.....it's OK.

worth approx the $10, but just barely.

If there is one mod I would really like to see in 2142 is for someone to implement a new color palette for the game. Easily the dullest, most boring set of colors I've ever seen in a AAA title.

They won't add green grass and flowers to the game because of the "story" being set in the ice age. Yeah I could really care less about the story too.

Don't expect Conquest Assault Lines to be like UT2004's Onslaught or Planetside etc. It's still just Conquest mode only now you can capture the enemy (PAC) base if you hold all the flags on the map. The EU team gets an award for doing so if they pull it off, that's it.

Seriously, now we are going to have to isntall a starburst of "download managers" in order to download our purchased games.

Why dont they all agree on a standard like Steam, perhaps not steam but something like it so we can all get along with any client we choose, just like an email client.
