Supreme Commander to Expand?

The Supreme Commander Q&A on eXp discusses Gas Powered Games' new RTS game with Chris Taylor. The conversation includes an intriguing, if not confusing, comment on the possibility, or perhaps probability, that the game will expand. Here's his answer to a question about whether there is an expansion coming:
Yeah, I mean if we are going to announce something, it wouldn't be that there is nothing coming. (laughs) So you can do a little detective work on that without getting me in trouble, most importantly.

The unit graphics aren't great, but the scale is awesome, and so is the fact that the graphics engine handles that scale. Technology used to aid gameplay and all.

The graphics are simply amazing. Hold spacebar to pan the camera around, for example.
Meh. They're ok. They're not as good as CoH (yes, I realise it's a different scale, etc). But the huge units are definitely pretty cool. It doesn't really matter anyway, as 90% of the time you won't be zoomed in.

One thing I did forget to mention was that this game is frikkin' HUGE! It takes up 11Gb on my disk, which is more than my entire Steam folder. Not that it's a problem in this age of 500Gb hard-disks, but I thought it was quite interesting.

I think TA was the greatest RTS of them all, and believe me, I played almost all of them.
Now SC surpassed TA, and that is an awesome feeling that there are still developers out there who really love PC gaming and dont swim with the mainstream.

The whole game is just perfect. There are a few bugs and a few features missing, but when I remember the TA support, they all will be fixed/added in no time.
Too bad my computer is too slow to play it in multiplayer and all my money for the next year will flow into my car.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

I can not find the game you are talking about, or the player.
How can you search for it other than the GPG browser replay game function?

Okay IMO this is a wonderful game. It's definitely much better than the beta. My first impressions of the game didn't last long as I realized how incredible the game is, over playing several games and watching the game replays which are easy to play off of GPGnet.

The graphics are simply amazing. Hold spacebar to pan the camera around, for example. Its really cool to see those huge tech 4 bots moving around and blasting stuff.

There is a really good replay to see, search for the player name 'zsinj7' and its the game played on 2-25.2007 with five players. WOW what an amazing game. Over 2hrs long but epic battles throughout. Until you see a game like that played out, you just haven't seen Supreme Commander!

Just like Total Annihilation (which SupCom is based), this game will get better over time as hardware catches up. The game is mostly CPU bound. On my AMD 4200+X2 it plays pretty well but can get choppy when there are a thousand units on the map. But in those moments when there is a lot going on you can slow the game down very easily which is what you'll find yourself doing anyway. It plays very well on my cpu.

For my SB Audigy2 card I had to set my sound acceleration to 'basic' in the DirectX panel (run 'dxdiag') because there is a known bug with some sound cards/drivers. I'm sure it will be fixed before long.

I love TA:Spring, which is a free & open source Total Annihilation remake. I've watched many games from the Spring Battleroom. Having watched several games in SupCom I feel that SupCom is a huge leap in the right direction though it takes getting used to at first. If you like RTS games, you may really love this game. If you don't then take a look at the free demo but just know that at first it might seem odd. Give it some game play and tech up to lvl 3 and 4!

I find that they do, it's just the tutorials / manual sometimes say 'left click' when they mean 'right click' and vice versa.

No I mean the bug where planes don't refuel on carriers, but they will on cruisers. Which is just st00pid.

Also the formations need work. They're really cool, and awesome with mobile shield/stealth field generators, but they are too slow to form, the units all back down to a central point before forming up, instead of forming up on the target location and queueing of move orders appears to break the formation.
Another problem that's related to the poor path-finding. I really hope that that's the number one fix on their list for a patch.

You can devote more processing power to things like pathfindin in SupCom using the console. Not sure how exactly, but it can be done. And in a totally different genre, you could adjust the traffic engine in SimCity 4 using mods. Of course, neither of these is an official thing.

One point: letting you do this in multiplayer would create an advantage for people with faster computers: their units would move smarter. I don't think that's a good thing.

Indeed, Dark Avatar gives you the options to have the game take full hold of your CPU for enemy AI.

I wonder if games will ever have scalable options for AI just like they do for graphics. Right now I can choose to play a game with low gfx and a nice smooth framerate, or to get some extra eye candy and let it chug a bit (which is often fine in a SP game).

But I can't choose to have the AI pathfinding not suck and let it chug a bit, versus simpler AI and smoother play.

Would be an interesting set of choices on how you wanted the game to look, play and feel...

Note - I haven't played SC, but I keep seeing people complain about the pathfinding.

The thing that's bugging me most atm is that carriers didn't work properly in the retail version. I had heard some things about it being fixed in the current patch, but I don't know if that's correct.

Also the formations need work. They're really cool, and awesome with mobile shield/stealth field generators, but they are too slow to form, the units all back down to a central point before forming up, instead of forming up on the target location and queueing of move orders appears to break the formation.

Just a note about the UI. You all do know that the new patch added a new and smaller UI now right? ATL/ Down Arrow and it gives you a minimized UI. I love it. The only thing that’s missing is the Mini map on this new version and I have spoken to Chris about adding it. He said its possible and that many more patches are coming. But don’t let the missing mini map cause concern you can go back to the full view with a simple key stroke and do what needs to be done. And yes this game defiantly worth buying the large scale battles alone with the large scale map sizes are worth the price of this game.

It's a good game; it's isn't the alpha/omega of RTS games tat I hyped myself to believe (key word myself) but it's definitely fun

I liked playing the beta the when I think about playing this game it doesn't interest me. The game imo is kind of boring most of the time. I don't like the speed and ease of teching up. I don't feel like you ever get into big tech 2 fights because getting to tech 3 is so fast and making power/mass producers once in tech 3 gives you almost unlimited resources so it's just a spam a thon from then on.

And why make anything but tech 3 siege bots once there?

The scale can make things tedious at times, especially near the end of battles when you have to get units across the map in transports. I'm sure the interface could be improved (though it's by no means bad).

I tend to increase the speed of the game by clicking the "+" key when I'm migrating a large army across the map. So if you're amassing a large assault you can ferry them near the base and up the speed, just keep an eye out for any attacks. Of course, I usually try to soften them up from afar first, and perhaps have some engineers setup a little mini-base nearby with some shield generators and defenses.

The air transport is near-useless for me. I'm not a big air guy, so I don't feel like pumping out a bunch of superior fighters to backup my air transport just to ship a couple of guys over. While it's fast as hell, it doesn't haul much and it's hull must be made out of aluminum for how fast it gets shot down.
