Top Secret MMORPG Revealed

The Top Secret Homepage is online, revealing plans for an upcoming MMORPG from Dave Perry and Acclaim that will combine game development with The Apprentice, as it seeks contributions from potential players, with the most valued contributor earning the chance to create their own project: "Perry will choose a winner from the contributors, and Acclaim will be giving them a breath-taking prize, 'A Video Game Industry Directorship', working on a new fully-funded massively multiplayer online PC game. David Perry will be their Executive Producer to help them as needed on their game, and once they complete their project, they will even earn royalties from the game sales!" Here's a bit from the press release, courtesy of Kotaku:
Interestingly, applicants don't need any prior game development experience. In fact, Perry refuses to look at resumes. "We only care about the pure, focused, passionate talent they show up with," he says.

"Top Secret is like 'The Apprentice' meets 'American Idol' meets 'The Video Game Industry'. We're giving our players a chance to work on an online game that we will actually develop and publish. Our community really loves these games and knows what it takes to make a hit. And it will be a dream come true for one lucky star that shines the most throughout the project," says Acclaim CEO Howard Marks.

This is a first-of-its-kind project from the new Acclaim, a resurrected company with a very well known name. The new Acclaim will focus entirely on providing quality multiplayer online games for free. The games will be supported with a mix of advertising and virtual item stores. Acclaim has already partnered with IGA Worldwide to provide in-game advertising for its other online game titles.

It is when they begin to "target" in game advertisements that I get worried, they have to get the data to mine from somewhere. Will they start adding your favorites, history and cookie cache, perhaps using the indexes built into the "search desktops"?

David Perry has teamed up with Acclaim to offer a lucky gamer, a ground-breaking new video game industry prize.

The misuse of the comma here suggests that a "lucky gamer" may actually be on offer. Now I'm excited.

I earn royalties from my games! But then I'm a small-time indie dev. I learned a long time ago, after having share options in two well known companies, that they mean nothing, and the only way you will really benefit from successful games is if you personally own the IP.

My game idea involves the hunting down and killing of those involved (and their family's)with the new wave of 'in-game advertising'.

If it sold well, I'd do the squeal with E.A., I'm sure they could real take a game idea like that far.

Send Acclaim your best ideas so that they can steal them and then not hire you.

What does the EULA say? *All* submissions become property of Acclaim no doubt.

I guess if you have no interest in making your ideas into games, then you could try giving them away to Acclaim, maybe they'll choose you.

Man I hate Dave Perry. Massive ego, little everything else.

But I'll check this out. I'll never pay for the product, but I'll see if there's a way I can weasel some money out of it.

I was hoping it would be based off the RPG from the '80s... but I guess not.
"We can do this one of two ways. There's the hard way, which involves hours of discussion, tons of negotiation, half a dozen bribes, and no guarantee of success."
"What's the easy way?"

First thing I thought was 'Bioware has finally revealed their top secret MMOG! WOOT!'

Then I read a few lines down and realized this was a MMOG based on reality TV by a guy with a less then stellar background. Yahoo. :/

Come on Bioware, feed my addiction!

*** BULLSHYT ALERT ***
Perry will choose a winner from the contributors, and Acclaim will be giving them a breath-taking prize, 'A Video Game Industry Directorship , working on a new fully-funded massively multiplayer online PC game. ... and once they complete their project, they will even earn royalties from the game sales!"
AccLame will never deliver on anything even remotely resembling that statement.

1. There is no such thing as a "director" job title in the organization chart that comes under the Exec Producer

2. A fully funded mmog clocks in at $10-30 MILLION these days, takes 2-4 yrs to develop, and they're gonna hand it over to some Leroy Noobsauce fanboi to run. right.

3. Royalties? What royalties? The urban legend that devs get royalties off the games they make died off sometime back in the early 1980's with the Apple II.

"Top Secret is like 'The Apprentice' meets 'American Idol' meets 'The Video Game Industry'"

That sounds like it won't suck AT ALL!

I can't wait to read yet another interview with Perry in which he proclaims how he makes videogames "just because he loves making videogames."

I bet if you google Dave Perry + Donald Trump, you find a picture of Trump fucking Perry in the ass while Perry's wearing a FOX RULES hat. And a MMORPG flag stuck between his teeth.

David Perry, Video game developer whore.

Creston

Edit : AND it has in-game advertising! I mean, what more do you want? Blizzard might as well shut those WoW servers down RIGHT NOW!

At first I thought this was going to be based on the pen and paper game.

Hmmm based on reality TV? Uhhhhhhh....

Refresh button LOL ?? Thats so 90s. These days content is dynamic and if anything needs refreshing that section of the page auto refresh.

Things dont look good for this game already, I feel this is the "last-of-its-kind" design.

Wow, that really was a sucky page. Works in FF, but I can't see any reason for the warning. And what's with the 'refresh status' button on the top? Is that in case you're camping the page and are too lazy to push refresh?
