It worked fine for me (Firefox 2.0 if it makes a difference). I got the key, but the download is too big to attempt on this DSL. Besides, it's Turbine... they're the one-hit wonder of the MMOG world.

"but the download is too big to attempt on this DSL."

What size DSL line are you on? The file is 3GB. Even on the slowest DSL line that is only a few hours. Or, spend a few bucks more a month and get rid of your shite connection.

Playing Vanguard right now, will try out the stress test to see if I want to play that or fully level in Vanguard.

1.5mbit, I'm at my parents house and they can't get anything faster. This laptop probably can't run it anyway. I have 10mbit cable at home...

I played for about 30 mins with dwarfs and elfs and promptly uninstalled it. Same for Vanguard.

This page has direct d/l links to the client split into 650MB chunks and hosted on their web servers. I'm sure they'd prefer you to use their download manager (which caps your speed @ 300KB/s, IIRC) or get it from a torrent. This was a MUCH faster download for me, though (3000 - 4000KB/s).

I have a couple of friends who got into an earlier phase of the beta for this. They are both ex-WoW junkies and one of them still plays Burning Crusade somewhat regularly. They have both been unable to put this game down since they started it and one of them is saying it beats WoW hands down. Neither of them have liked any Turbine MMO released to date either. I don't know if this is just something that'll wear off for them but I'm definitely going to give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about. Maybe, just maybe Turbine did it right this time.

Everything I've read on the beta message boards rates it a B+, stating its basically a WoW clone, but improved upon, and set in the Tolkien universe.

They need to drop the NDA on this game. Perhaps they will after the stress test (or maybe it is already and I haven't seen). I'm going to risk getting booted from the beta, but yeah, it's fun. There's things to improve upon still, and it brings my computer to its knees in certain areas, but I still enjoy it. I'll stick with WoW for a while longer, but LotrO would be the next MMO I get if I did purchase one.

They did, on Feb 12th : http://lotro.turbine.com/forums/announcement.php?f=10&a=3

I'd agree that LoTRO is a decent MMORPG, but it's second to WoW. There isn't enough there (that is significantly better than WoW) for me to spend the time to level up all over again, but I think those that are tolkien fans will be happy with it.

The world feels very confining, and the graphics and animations are last generation. Don't even bother.

Oh, nice.. didn't know they had lifted it.. ahem..

First off, this isn't a WoW killer. I don't know if there will be a WoW killer any time in my lifetime. But, I will say that it has aspects that I really like. For instance, the starter quest-line is in what you could think of as an instance. That is, an entire town and the outlying area is an instance. After a certain point, when you are done with the quests in the area, you advance through the storyline. I think this is done really well. If you do a quest that shows the town being burned to the ground, you sure as hell better not return after the quest and buildings standing untouched.

The landscape graphics look great. Character models could be better... a lot better. And as fuji said above, the animations aren't real great either. I'm hoping it improves in time. I really like the title system in the game. If you kill X number of creatures, do X number of quests in an area, or just don't die within X levels, etc, you can pick different titles to show. I really enjoy doing that since it gives me something to shoot for instead of just levels.

And now for what I hate.. the damn UI. For some reason, Turbine has picked the UI from DDO (it's improved over DDO, but not by much). I absolutely hate it. I'm running at 1600x1200 and I can barely read the icons and font. And coming from WoW, where everything is butter smooth, it's hard to use a UI that is less than perfect. The vendor system is meh, chat system is garbage. I'm not sure how crafting is since I haven't tried it in this push.

But, the UI can be skinned, so hopefully this won't be such a big deal if someone can make a decent looking skin. And they're slowly making improvements to it. Each new push brings the game closer to something I'd want to play. It's not there yet, though.

What they _should_ do is remake AC1. Same skill system (and skills.. jump ftw!), better graphics, and for god's sake, more than a few days working on the UI. Maybe throw in a quest system to bring it up to date with current MMOs.

Having played both the LOTRO close beta and WOW since launch I will say both are great MMOs.

LOTRO's strength is that it pushing more casual gaming than the "hard core" that WOW has.

The crafting system in LOTRO is a little more robust than WOW's. While I haven't fully immersed myself into crafting, my guildmates have stated that it's close to the crafting system in SWG (pre-CU, pre-NGE). Players can also fully dye all armor and weaponry, including the BOP, BOE, and epic stuff. I really wish WOW had this.

Graphically LOTRO, when fully maxxed out, is extremely gorgeous. Turbine decided to make LOTRO's graphics more realistic versus WOW's stylized cartoon-y graphics.

WOW runs much smoother on older systems. On my AMD 3200, 1GB DDRRAM, GeForce 7900GT I always get a framerate of 60; sometimes more. In LOTRO I was having lots of problems whenever I got near the major cities. For example Bree is a dreadfully lagged city. It's not uncommon to spend 30-40 minutes running from the West Gate to the South Gate... if lagged.

Within WOW titles are earned by killing players. In LOTRO titles are earned by killing mobs. And each title awards to talent-like buffs.

Probably the most unique class is the Minstrel. I've not seen this type of class before in any other MMO's. With this class you are able to actually play musical notes via the keyboard's numeric keypad. You can mix up the notes to achieve different results. AFAIK after you learn a valid song a hotkey icon becomes available. This is VERY close to how Turbine handled spells in Asheron's Call 1. You had to "learn" the spell. Once it was learned it was available as a hotkey icon.

Turbine isn't stressing PVP as a major aspect of game play. But Turbine isn't leaving it out entirely. In the Ettenmoores there's something called Monster Play. What this let's players do is run up to any creatures (spiders, bears, orcs?, and so forth) within the zone and "control" them. After assuming control you can attack Elf, Dwarf, Human, and Hobbit players.

There's more to say but I think I'll end with the above stuff. I will say that LOTRO will appeal to those weary of WOW's "hard core" game play. LOTRO will also appeal to Tolkien fans.

wow is starting a loose a few people who are sick of the game. Lots of people burned through the expansion pack inside a week and will have to wait a year for another one. I think you will see more people trying other games. WoW won't suffer, but there may be room for LOTRO if it's fun.
