EST is GMT-5. So 12:30 PM EST would be
5:30 PM GMT.
EST is the timezone for the east coast of North America (New York, Massachusetts, Florida, etc). We Americans are just used to thinking in our local timezones, partially because TV commericals used to say "Tonight at 8PM Estern, 5PM Pacific, prepare to see ..."
Personally I do a lot of work with colleagues in Switzerland and the UK so I have to always know what their times are.
