Crysis Q&A

Crysis Charges Forward on IGN is a Q&A on the upcoming first-person shooter with Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli: "The goal really is to ensure that all of the suit's functionality is equally useful. Obviously in a heavy fight you might want to dial up the armor but you could perhaps use strength instead and pickup a large fuel drum and throw it into the enemy. Other options could include cloaking and using enhanced speed to quickly flank around and taking out the enemy from behind. Watching people play the game so far has proven that there a ton of creative ways in which to take on the enemy. We have seen some pretty wacky things and approaches that really show that there is never really ONE way to win."

I dont want Linux either ( not in its current state anyway ). I agree, Linux sucks the shit as a personal machine.

I would love to go to OS X, that is a more realistic route, but only if OGL gets more adoption on game engines and more software gets ported.

As for forced upgrades, we get forced by OEM's when we buy hardware ( I use laptops mostly and spare me the laptops are not for gaming bs ). The first thing I do on my laptops is reformat and install an OS and replace the HD

I think I will try to raise the question of NV and AMD's contribution to OGL at the next conf call

Well that is your personal choice no one forces anyone to upgrade to Vista. I tried Linux but since i am a gamer Linux suck balls.

XP64 has progressed in leaps and bounds but quite a few annoying flaws remain and, from what I've read in the forums at Microsoft, there's no real dedicated effort with much of it. All their effort is for Vista.

I don't think I've ever seen the OS crash, but plenty of applications have..... and even after making WMP11 work for XP64, it still crashes just as much as WMP10 did.

Shit like this doesn't make me want to buy Vista, it'll make me buy Suse when XP64 is beyond it's time.

I wouldn't judge Vista in it's current state since most of the driver supports are not even there yet. 90% of the drivers are still beta. I am running Vista on my computer in a dual boot setup and i have no problem with it. If it acts up on me i just boot into XP. I am not sure why people complaining so much about that and comparing Vista to XP. XP is out for about 5 years now and it was a pile of shit when it first came out too. I would give Vista few months until driver support catches up and then it will be ok. I dont think there is any killer app. that runs on only Vista that forces you to get Vista right now. Wait a few months and it will all be better.

If you run XP64 you should know that already. I had XP64 and nothing was working with it, so i got rid of it. I guess it is better nowadays, but i would still prefer Vista over XP because of the DX10. All the DX10 games got pushed back to Q3 and Q4 of 2007 so that gives some time to Nvidia, Creative and all the other companies to catch up with driver support.

Im running Vista RTM Ultimate and Business and its a crock of shit IMHO. I have to suffer it every day. It is being pulled from my work machines and back to the 2003 SKU's.

Im holding out on my personal machines on XP 64bit edition until support and games are no more which should be a few years

RDP on it is even buggier as it cant decide what theme to use, classic or The Adams Family theme.

Seriously, if you must run Vista, I strongly advise waiting for the SP1, if you thought XP was buggy, Vista is WORSE.

Myth, pure myth. Aero works fine on a DX9 card with Shader Model 2.x support. I was running the Vista beta on a machine with Intel 915 onboard graphics (hardware pixel shader support, vertex shaders done on the CPU) and Aero worked flawlessly.

Yes it can be an API and open source at the same time believe it or not

I care not if it is open or not, I just care that those that can contribute (Nvidia, AMD, Game engine houses etc, Sony, etc etc) DO contribute and the API spec is STANDARDISED, and kept up to date, and USED.

Thanks, FreonTrip, I couldn't bother to write a good reply to all the morons here myself, but yours just explained the OpenGL situation best. The sad thing is that it won't do any good, the morons will just rant on... And what the heck is that about OpenGL being Open Source? It is an API, for crying out loud! How can it be open source? It can be licensed royalty free or something like that, but open source?

I will buy Crysis, at discount only

Looks a great game, FarCry was great. The map environments screamed immersion. I would dearly love a Tribes 2 mod for this engine (yeah lets turn it into a T2 thread instead now heh)

The farcry experience, awsome. The multiplayer could have been better, larger player counts and bigger maps ( like T2 ) hey can we have deployables too

...how this turned into a screed about OpenGL, with lots of people who haven't got a clue what they're talking about sounding off and screaming at each other while a few voices of reason try and calm them down. But here's a little perspective.

The governing body for OpenGL was recently transitioned from the OpenGL ARB to the fairly well-known Khronos standards body. They've long directed the development of OpenGL ES, the subset / fork of OpenGL optimized for embedded systems, and from all appearances they are making a sincere effort to bring OpenGL to a level competitive with Direct3D. Two new revisions of the API are in development with assistance from major players in the industry. One seeks to transition many internal aspects of OpenGL from an essentially state-based system to a more object-based system; the other will build upon this, bringing instanced rendering, geometry shaders, and other Direct3D 10-level features to OpenGL. The first, code-named Longs Peak, is scheduled to be ready for consumption this summer. The second, Mt. Evans, should be ready closer to October. A proper SDK has also quietly been worked upon, though not too many announcements have been made about this yet.

OpenGL (or its open source workalike Mesa) is the standard hardware rendering interface on Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac OS X. It has been used for all manner of purposes, from CAD software to playing Quake on a cell phone to rendering graphics for Pixar films. There is too much riding on OpenGL for it to go away. The API's future is bright. If it achieves feature parity with DirectX 10 (which Microsoft seems intent on keeping a fairly set standard relative to prior revisions of the API), it will be an appealing option for cross-platform game developers. The Wii, Gamecube, and Playstation 3 all support at least OpenGL ES. And much as Microsoft wants everyone to use Direct3D, it has to support OpenGL because to do otherwise would be a public image disaster and suicidal folly.

APIs are neither negative nor positive by nature, but I'm personally rooting for OpenGL.

As for Crysis: My skepticism at the system requirements is softened more and more by what appear to be some really good ideas, as well as the fact that Far Cry was as fine a debut from a game studio as I've seen. Jury's out on whether happy thoughts are really warranted yet, but the whole package looks pretty good...

I also found the checkpoints to be close enough together so that it wasn't a problem.

The guys too good to implement a Quicksave feature in their game, oh well of course they do for themselves just not paying customers.

Didn't one of the patches add quicksave to Far Cry? Not that it really needed it. I found the checkpoint system to work just fine.

"PS3 uses an implementation of OGL, so stop blaming OGL's downfall on the rise of console games"

PS3 using OGL dosent do much for pc gaming thats where we need to see it implemented, so theres a choice other than DX10 or should we say Vi$ta only.

"How many games hit Windows PC's, not many compared to the console market, how many games hit OS X, not many as OpenGL is dead, how many hit Linux, not many because of their open source attitude and OpenGL is dead."

Last I looked there where far more PC games on the selves at say fry’s than console games, by this I mean to say variety of titles, sure you got a huge section for console games but how many are the same game for a different system?

"This site should be for consoles only as gaming on personal computers won't exist at this rate"

I doubt it there’s still money to be made in the pc market my fear is half or more will become bad ports over from console.
