Unreal Tournament 3 Mania

A small flurry of activity accompanies the news of the Unreal Tournament 3 name change (story), starting with the release of some new screenshots on GameSpot. There's also a new in-game movie, available in one or both of two resolutions (one of them very high) on 3D Gamers, ComputerGames.ro, Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, GameSpot, and Worthplaying. Finally, hands on previews of Epic's coming shooter sequel from a Midway press event can be found on BeyondUnreal, Computer and Video Games, FiringSquad, and Games Radar.

The fact that this is also being developed for consoles makes me leery.

Original UT was awesome. 2K3 wasn't. 2K4 was a step in the right direction.

Perhaps it was the Tribes 2 experience that got me liking the "freedom" of movement in gaming rather than invisible forcefields.

What ruins UT is the limitations of the maps (amongst other things). There is just no freedom.
Actually I prefer the indoor levels as opposed to the more open levels favoured by UT2k3/4. You don't need freedom if it feels like you actually have control over skirmishes and that it's actually about skill rather than overly powerful weapons. UT got it just right but both subsequent games lost that, even though they were still enjoyable to a degree.

Oh crap, I just watched the trailer. This game now fits squarely into my "I don't care" list. Still, at least we have Crysis, Team Fortress 2 and ET:QW to look forward to - it seems unlikely that they'd all blow but it wouldn't surprise me.

UT2K4 was an attempt to fix the previous release, it didnt go far enough. The vehicles where rubbish, the physics was terrable, same old retard players that basically make the same not worth it anymore.

This is why we need a little higher learning curve than what consoles need for PC games as it keeps the retarded ones at their nintendo 3 button controller they can slobber over.

Firstly, I can't believe how shit 3DGamers is now. Secondly, I hope that they focus the game a bit - the game types in UT2k4 all seemed too different and unrelated... like the game didn't know what it wanted to be. The original UT was an amazing game and I wish they'd return more to that forumla... it was about great level design, clean graphics and really fun gameplay. I'm not a fan of the vehicles, as they just bounce around and don't handle with any realism (yes, even though it's not trying to be realistic it is still crap) - they're nothing on Tribes 2 and that game is bloody ancient now.

I'm really not expecting much from it but I really do hope that it doesn't blow. A new UT game has so much potential that it will be a real shame if they mess it up.

I really, really liked UT2K4 and I'm prepared to holdout hope they don't screw this up. But it's hard to remain so optimistic when it's being done for simultaneous console release.

I don't know how you can get bored with over the top characters and weapons, considering they have now become a rarity in a genre full of military-themed shooters.

What I consider the 2 leaders in this style of FPS (Quake and UT) have each tried to one-up eachother in the ridiculous sized models and wepaons for each iteration of their games. It has done more to push me away from the 2 titles than it has for me to embrace them. The Q and Q2 weapons have been the most enjoyable out of that series!

I get bored with the "over the top" characters and weapons - and with this also being a console game - I dread that it will have the console feel.

Not geting my hopes up on this one, and I will stick to the more realistic FPS games.

I'm not going to get worked up about this now. I know it won't be hitting until the Holidays at the earliest despite what is said.

While I liked UT2 GOTY edition (then I discovered Tribes2 - had to get it in there somewhere ), I got burned by the UT 200x aftermaths. I think I will wait after their previous blunders.
