Galactic Command Games

3000AD announces that the episodic space combat game announced last month under the title Galactic Command (story) is now being developed as three separate projects: Galactic Command: Echo Squad (PC), Echo Command: Bravo Team (platforms not specified), and Echo Command Excalibur (Xbox 360), with each game to follow the episodic format:
On December 4th, 2006, we announced a new aerial/space combat action series which was spawned from our existing and emerging game technologies. At the time, we envisioned the series as being focused on a single aspect of gameplay for both the PC and XBox 360.

During negotiations with various parties, we ended up splitting the series in order to cater to our different audiences across platforms. The end result is that the series has now been split into specific episodic genres. Imagine, if you will, the different aspects of the popular sci-fi series, Star Trek.

Galactic Command - <http://www.3000ad.com/products/galcom-ES.shtml> Echo Squad, is the new name of the original aerial/space action combat title based on the adventures of a group of Elite Force Pilots assigned to the Excalibur carrier. This title will remain a PC exclusive.

We have this week signed an exclusive four episode deal for this title. More info will be announced by the publisher at the upcoming D.I.C.E. summit in Las Vegas.

GALCOM:ES is on schedule for release in Q2/07.

Galactic Command - Bravo Team is an fps only title based on the adventures of a team of elite marines assigned to a planetary starbase. It is also episodic and features some of our emerging technologies, including a heavily revamped terrain engine which uses SpeedTreeRT. More info and shots will be revealed this Summer, as well as additional info on what platforms it will be released on.

GALCOM:BT is on schedule for release in Q4/07.

Galactic Command - Excalibur. Similar to "Echo Squad", this title is also episodic and focuses on the Excalibur command carrier and the combat pilots assigned to it. This title will remain an XBox 360 exclusive.

GALCOM:EX is on schedule for release in Q2/08.

I think 3000AD is missing the point...

FPS games are a dime a dozen and it takes something really special, even large scale FPSs with vehicles, to stand out. I understand if the FPS genre is a cash cow, I really do, but with Quake Wars, an Operation Flashpoint sequel coming, and a host of other large scale battle FPSs, will it appeal to anyone? Will it even appeal to the diehard spacesim fans that cling to the Battlecruiser games?

Excaliber/Echo sounds interesting, but would be much better done as a licensed Battlestar Galactica game that played like the Wing Commanders of old. That's really what this game sounds like, Wing Commander. That's not necesarily a bad thing, and 3000AD can definately learn something from MS Q&A requirements, maybe if it's a decent success EA will bring Wing Commander back from the grave.

But wait...they really are missing the point...none of these are hardcore spacesims for the masochistic, is 3000AD setting out to usurp their fanatic userbase?

I guess I'm a bit disappointed. I was hoping that one day the BC series would be done right, made accessible, and made fun, but then, maybe this is the first step...

fang i was one of the idiots who use to believe in his games and bought BC 3000AD even with a scathing PC Gamer review many moons ago.

The concept of the games is something I would play, but the learning curve (mountain) of the controls was something I just couldn't get over.

As much as I hate to say it maybe dumbing it down for the Consoles will actually help this game but who knows.

Also didn't Derek bash episodic gaming recently in a Sin or Half Life 2 thread?

Am I the only one that actually finds his games pretty good?

I feel pretty honored that I have a personal game programmer.

Thanks Derek. Pretty decent work for the 50 dollar budget I gave you.....:)

That being said of course - I can't help but be intrigued by the idea of a DS 360 game. Surely this is a guy famous for impenetrable control schemes - and his gonna be limited to a gamepad??? Could this be the first 360 game that REQUIRES a keyboard - or is derek just gonna make a space invaders clone.

Very interesting point. I'm surprised a DS game would be capable of making it past console QA, and even if it did the game sites will give it terrible marks because it will be unfinished and play like shit.

Getting back to the controls though, I suspect he'll just require multiple button presses to perform actions. "Press X + A + LB + D-pad up + Back to fire your weapon." "Hold RT + B + D-pad down and press X + Y + Right Stick to cycle through your weapons."

I wonder if Derek is developing all three of these projects by himself as he supposedly did with the other ones or if he has teams working on each one.

Was wondering that myself.

I think the various parties are the support groups he attends who said "Derek your full of shit - you couldn't make a good game if you lived in the land of nice and shiny good games"

I take it this will be available as a download via xbox live for 1 MS point? I can't imagine anyone paying the normal 400 or 800 points, let alone $60....

soz bit drunk - lemme just confirm you do mean mr ds phd paying people to play his game yeah?

I mean I'm drunk but not even I have lost enough faith in humanity to think that anybody would pay DS for a game.
