WoW: Burning Crusade on Fire

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Shatters Day-1 Sales Record is a press release that wows us with word that the new WoW expansion sold more copies in its first 24 hours than many games will sell in a lifetime, with more that 2.4 million copies sold:
Day-one sales totals on both continents were similar, with an estimated total of nearly 1.2 million copies sold on the first day in North America and an estimated total of more than 1.1 million copies sold in Europe within the first 24 hours of launch(a). By the end of the first day of availability on both continents, a total of more than 1.7 million players had already logged in and upgraded World of Warcraft to play The Burning Crusade.

I'm been playing a 10 day trial of WOW, and I get "Disconnected from server" at least 3-4 times an hour, sometimes in less than 2 minutes...

I've updated my nic drivers, reinstalled/repatched the game (there'as a new patch today BTW), and have finally opened a support ticket...

Anyone else having this issue?

WoW's built in security system detects GW on your system and is trying to keep WoW 'Pure'

There use to be a way to see what servers were located where (east coast, west coast). But also with BC coming out and everyone scrambling to hit 70 first get the uber drops, and powerlevel Blood Elfs and Squiddy, the system is a bit constipated.

I used to have this same problem with City of Heroes WAY the hell back... I ran a positron (or was it synapse...) TF one time where I couldn't stay logged in long enough to do anything after finishing buffs (Speed Boost FTW!!!). I'd drop... try to get back in, rebuff, drop... heh Gawd it sucked... but I was able to stay in the game during the AV fight and got my SO...

As for how it was eventually fixed... No idea... had nothing to do on my end (seemingly)... Pretty sure I had also tried updated drivers, etc... It's possible they fixed it on their side, and this is likely because they did make some netcode improvements AFAIK.

Don't really have any suggestions on how to get this resolved, but like any PC problem, it can be caused by a few of a million things... And it's quite likely, it'll just fix itself (so ta speak).

Ok I do have suggestions... Try your PC at a friends place that has a different ISP... Try a diff server, like Zul'Jin (horde), where you can say hi to Skane (Undead Rogue) : )

Anyways... G'luck... I know how insanely annoying constant disconnects are, and I hope it's resolved soon ; )

If you do happen to find out what's wrong, but your 10 day trial is up, or some shit, lemme know... I have extras, or if you have another email addy, you can just get the referral one set up (again) : )

I am on my second server (Ravencrest? I intentionally chose a "new" one to minimize traffic)...maybe Support will get back to me and/or the 2.06 patch will resolve it. I grabbed that this AM, but then the servers were all down this morning...

Thanks!

Ya their weekly maintenance is Tuesday mornings... Though for the last month, it's been more a non-issue as they instituted some live weekly maintenance (meaning servers only need a reboot instead of the ~6 hour block of downtime... Should be back at 11am PST, 2pm EST.

How you liking it so far, and what race/class you playing?

I'm playing a human mage, which is basically what I played in GW, just to get the hang of things...

I like it, and I'd say the more time I spend with it, the more I like it...think the only thing holding me back from buying it is the disconnect issue...

Well if you can, try what I suggested... also... ya know how installation programs always say close everything then run it, we always ignore that? Try running WoW with 'nothing' going in the background... Especially network related stuff of course. Azureus used to blow up my connection every few minutes... and running mIRC beside it was horrible.

Human mage is cool... I think my very first char (at launch) was human mage. Named Alamar : ) However, you're much better off making an Orc Warlock... On Zul'jin... : )

Why orc? OMFG their racial is amazing... Blood fury... great for melee and casters... Some scary shit sometimes...

nin, are you using a wireless connection? WoW likes having a robust IP connection and I know many people who were having issues and resolved them by switching from wireless to wired.

To be honest, a "new" server is actually probably one of the worst, since a lot of people wanted to make characters on a fresh server with the launch... I'd try an old server that's listed as Medium (or Low if there're any?) pop and see if you still get the same issues.

Yeah... I don't know what the issue is with wireless connections. From what I understand about IP (not a ton) it shouldn't be an issue. But for some reason it seems to be...

It has been conjectured by some co-workers that it is a security/authentication issue. *shrug*

Run a cable across the floor temporarily and see if it fixes the problem...

I use wireless on my laptop to play this sometimes and I have no problem at all, sub 60ms pings. I'm only using WEP security though, because my wireless is only on when I'm using it. If you are using one of the better encryptions and/or 128bit, your ping will go up on cheap home routers like Linksys.

Um, it's 2 rooms away. Gonna need a hundred feet of CAT5, minimum

edit: Using WPA 128 bit, I believe...

And that's a problem? :O One of the bonuses of working at a "computer" company -- plenty of cat5 around to do things like that. I once made a 150ft cat5 for a buddy.

heh... My Rogue, Priest, Lock and Warrior are all Undead... Cannabilize is great, as is Will of the Forsaken (in PVP), and the Undead starting area beats all, but I wish I'd made some of those classes Orcs instead.

However, I don't like the Orc/Troll starting area that much...

I had that problem when I used to play WOW, and switching from wireless to wired resolved it. Frankly, though, I think a better solution is just not to play or you'll waste a few months (or weeks depending on how bad you addicition is) to reach a tiresome end-game.

hrmm..
just in case you are using a friend's install and he has AddOns loaded

Sometimes AddOns can cause the game to crash/disconnect.
MetaMap was doing it to me just the other day.
I'd get dropped, relog, and as soon as the screen came back up, dropped again; until i disabled MetaMap.
