sorry, short of a remake of T1 and/or T2 with new graphics, there is/was no way a genuinely new Tribes game can be made without the tribalwar community bitching and moaning. And the obvious flaw in your argument (Vivendi pulled the plug on patch #2) has already been pointed out
as for "they should not have bothered with an sp campaign", imo if the mp part had been decent (and not boycotted by the tribes hardcore fanbase) it might have drawn new players into the game
