Taking the Piss Out of Vista

Over a year ago (story) WeÂ’ve been killing PC gaming was the headline accompanying announcement of Microsoft's plans on redressing its neglect of the PC gaming sector with a commitment to its revival, describing an 18-month drive to build a Games for Windows program. Mysterious at first (story), it soon became evident that a significant part of this initiative would be centered around Windows Vista, as it was announced that Halo 2 for the PC will be a Vista exclusive (story) (presumably not due to Vista's "better file management" (story)). Subsequent speculation that DirectX 10 will be a Vista exclusive was confirmed (story), leading some to question whether the real plan was to revive PC gaming with Vista or to inspire Vista sales by leveraging PC gaming. If entertaining such thoughts was making you feel like a cynic, take comfort that these feelings are echoed by those in the know, such as WildTangent's Alex St. John (story), the original DirectX evangelist, and id Software's John Carmack (story), who have each recently raised their own concerns about this. St. John's criticism actually centers around the difficulties for developers large and small with Vista's integral Games Explorer and its security functions, while Carmack confirms the emperor wears no clothing in verifying that the Vista exclusivity of DirectX 10 is indeed just a contrivance to force gamers to upgrade:
ItÂ’s a tough thing for Microsoft, where, essentially, Windows XP was a just fine operating system. Before that, there were horrible problems with Windows. But once they got there, it did everything an operating system is supposed to do. Nothing is going to help a new game by going to a new operating system. There were some clear wins going from Windows 95 to Windows XP for games, but there really arenÂ’t any for Vista. TheyÂ’re artificially doing that by tying DX10 so close it, which is really nothing about the OS. ItÂ’s a hardware-interface spec. ItÂ’s an artificial thing that theyÂ’re doing there. TheyÂ’re really grasping at straws for reasons to upgrade the operating system. I suspect I could run XP for a great many more years without having a problem with it.

I do have the audacity. When you see the trailer, when you see the screenshots, when you hear from other gamers how cool it will be, when you hear from other gamers how cool it IS, then you will upgrade to Vista & get a better machine with more RAM, but it will take you longer to upgrade because you aren't thinking ahead.

The game will come out & you will upgrade. That isn't audacity, it's the plain & simple fact. You have XP right now because it is the most recent OS from microsoft & eventually that game out there will come & you will upgrade. It's not a question of if, it is when.

Zeph... nobody gives two shits on what you are running. If you think this is a sounding board to stroke your pathetic little pecker, and brag about your rig.... you have some serious issues, and should seek psychiatric help.

You also have the audacity to dictate what I will or will not do, based on some stupid game trailer or other ad. Here's a clue for you... the advertisement industry has little to no affect on me due to their spamming tactics over the years. I'm fairly immune to sales pitches.

I'm not some pathetic little dickless kid, like you, that jumps up and down and screams "I want!, I gotta have it!" at the first sign of some eye candy.

As for progress... it's a step backwards. More bloated, wasteful, and pathetic coding by Microsoft. As for running vLite or nLite... I LIKE to remove crap I don't want in my OS. It has nothing to do with what I run for a machine. My main machine is more than capable of running anything that is out now, or that will come out in the next year.

Anyway, you are a pathetic, ignorant little kid, and I'm done wasting time bantering with you.

You are correct, I'm running XP-64bit under dual-boot & I will be running Vista 64-bit. And my little vista-less pissboy, I'll be running a dual-boot for Vist & Vista-64bit.

And when that game comes out & it will, I will be using 4Gigs of RAM & enjoying it. You won't because you're a stubborn idiot that obviously can't afford much hardware or software as you are talking about vLite.

You think you know the answers but you don't. By the time you even get on board Vista, a year will have passed & I'll have 8Gb of RAM when that game comes out & it will come out. And you'll see that game & you'll watch the trailer & you'll want to play it. Cause people will be talking about this incredible game where you can damage anything in the game & it will react like it should. Entire structures can be brought down with explosives or driving through them & every object in the house or whatever will tip over, drop, break, collapse, or otherwise be rendered to a ruinous state. And it will be per pixel so no two explosions or other cause of demolition will be the same unless they are exactly the same. And you'll see that game & it will say "Games for Windows" on it & something else like a "5" on it which means that you can't play it because you only have the bare minimum for a gaming rig because you've been so reluctant to embrace new technology & so you have to wait until you can scrimp & save enough together so you can afford to buy a computer that can play a game as impressive as the original Unreal or Tribes series or Half-Life or the many uses of Quake3 engine or Far Cry. But you'll have this little shit computer because you're such a whiny little bitch.

So enjoy your insecurity about progress you pathetic little maggot.

So I basically see you all as complete hypocrites, not just minor hypcrites but big huge fat liar two-faced fucker hypocrites. Microsoft this & insecurity that & DRM & DirectX & whine whine whine whine whine whine whine. But when the game with sparkles & turning lights so shiny comes out, you'll all buy Vista to play it. Only 1 or 2 of you ever stood up & told the truth. All of the rest of you followed eachother like the blind following the blind, crying & whining & making a big fuss, basically only for each other. It's just so incredibly funny to laugh at you maggots.

Yeah Zeph, you know exactly what I'm going to do because you can either read my mind, or have some sort of telepathic influence over me.

When I say I'm not installing Vista, I'm completely serious. I don't care if games come out for "Vista Only" and stop being made for XP. I run Linux for everything, but games. I have zero reason to upgrade to Vista. This is coming from someone that supports over 1600 PC's and several server farms. Yes, our agency will be going to Vista... mainly for financial reasons (Using 2000, cheaper to skip over to Vista for vendor support lifetime)... and that won't be happening for at least a year. So... yeah... I'll be forced to support Vista... but I sure as hell won't be running it on my personal machines.

Ok... just to "give in" to say there might be ONE possibility of installing Vista on my home machines... that will depend on how much crap I can remove with vLite when it matures. But if I can't drastically reduce the crap to my satisfaction... there's no way in hell I'll ever install it on my machines. And due to the structure of the kernel and the OS... I seriously doubt vLite will ever get to be satisfactory to me (Although nLite does awesome for XP).

As for you having 4GB of RAM... your an idiot if you are running the 32-Bit Vista. It won't use all of your 4GB (like XP won't), and you have to tweak it to use 3GB or so. And if you are running the 64Bit version... you're still an idiot since it runs slower and the driver support sucks. Also, braniac, No process can use more than 2GB of RAM in any 32-Bit Windows OS. So while you may be able to tweak 32-Bit XP / Vista to use 3GB... the most you will ever get for a game is 2GB.

So, while I may be a maggot... you are a moron.

For all we know it might be a rubber stamp.
If current XBOX games are any guide, I think it will be more than just a rubber stamp. But, it's not going to be the bastion of quality that Microsoft would like consumers to believe. There are simply too many buggy XBOX games for that to be the case. The real problem will be that consumers will literally pay a price for this new seal of approval because it will make games more expensive to develop for the PC platform. Whether that cost manifests itself in both higher game prices and fewer game titles released will have to be seen.

The "quality" that they are referring to in the Games for Windows is more about QA-type issues like compatibility and show-stopping errors in the code, isn't it?
Yes, and that is what I have been referring to in my posts, e.g. "more extensive QA testing."

I know that it has nothing to do with "quality" as it relates to how high of a score it might attain on rating websites and in print mags.

Complete.Utter.Rubbish.

GfW is not a certification program that is even remotely close to an actual console certification. Have you not been paying attention? It, in no way, shape of form, has anything to do with the quality of a game. *sheesh*
Derek, as usual the poor quality of your games is only exceeded by the poor quality of your forum posts. While I am certainly no fan of Microsoft's, I'll take its word on its own program over yours.

See "The Games for Windows brand on games means four key things:
1) Quality. Games for Windows branded titles undergo extensive testing, and not just by the publisher. Microsoft also invests in quality checking each title to ensure they meet performance and reliability standards.
" at http://www.gamesforwindows.com/aboutGFW/gamesForWindows.aspx

Therefore, Microsoft's Games for Windows program most certainly does have something to do with the quality of a game, and from Microsoft's description it will at least be remotely close to console certification.

Of course, Derek, if your games get the Games for Windows seal of approval, then you'll be right. Games for Windows won't mean a damn thing when it comes to a game's quality.

Microsoft's Games for Windows certification program at best may lead to marginally better quality games if current console games are any guide. However, it will certainly lead to increased development costs through mandatory ESRB ratings and more extensive Q&A testing.

It may look pretty but don't expect it to run any quicker and don't expect it too be easier to use if you're a serious PC user. Still, the lobotomy will help provide an excuse for drooling and it will stop you feeling patronized and insulted by all the dumbing down that M$ have done to it.

If you have a good old Ford Escort and you add a skirt, a spoiler, paint go-faster-strips down the side, replace the back seat with a speaker to deafen the neighbours - it's still just a Ford Escort - it will most likely go slower and use more petrol, so do you think anyone with brains is really going to be impressed by it?

Remember OpenGL doesn't just run on Windows, MacOSX and Linux, it's must have been ported to the XBox and XBox360 too because I bet the Doom3 engine wasn't ported to DirectX for Doom3(XBox), Quake4(XBox360) & Prey(XBox360).

Wasn't it stated a while back that Sony(or one of other console makers) were going support OpenGL to make porting easier for PC games to X platform.

But this XP to Vista thing is just bullshit. There is NO benefit to the gamer. In fact, for the large majority of gamers it will be a huge letdown in performance, simply because of the fact that Vista is such a ridiculous resource hog. If you've got only 1 Gig of memory, you won't be running many games on Vista.

There is one cool thing about the Game Explorer that I believe I've read. Some, or maybe just GfW games, will be able to have saves managed in it with screenshots and all, which is pretty cool. Mostly pointless, but still cool.
