WoW Larger Than 145 Countries

Blizzard sends along the latest subscriber milestone for World of Warcraft, announcing the population in their MMORPG has passed the eight million mark. According to the 2006 estimates from the CIA World Factbook, if WoW were a nation, it would be the 94th most populated country on earth, ranking between Azerbaijan's 7,961,619 citizens, and Burundi's 8,090,068. Word is:
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®, its subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is now played by more than 8 million gamers around the world. World of Warcraft has also achieved new regional subscriber milestones, with more than 2 million players in North America, more than 1.5 million players in Europe, and more than 3.5 million players in China.

Now would be a good time to declare war against the nation of WOW & kill them all, ridding the world of 8 million idiots in a single stroke!

It's funny how Blizzard never seems to actually lose any customers. Personally, I think these numbers are bullshit. Maybe 8 million people have played the game but there's no way that many are active subscribers.

I have to agree with another poster.. the internet has seriously become the place for my main entertainment. my tv sits there and me and my wife never watch it.. its 40.00 a month just for 1 tv show we watch (smallville) and her soaps she watchs at between 1-3 ..if it wasnt for her soaps id cancel the thing and just download smallville when it airs..

MMORPG's offer continual entertainment much like a sitcom or an hourly tvshow you watch every week. except your IN IT this interactivity is a huge draw.. some can say wow is a huge glorified grapics chat program and they would be right if they wished to view it that way.. others would go on and talk about how blizzard only wants money and doesnt listen to its customers...

well blizzard has the biggest MMO on the planet i think they have done pretty well on thier own without our oppinions so far.. i guess ill see what they come up with next..(there are many aspects that each player would love to see improved.. blizzard just doesnt see it as a priority or worth the time vs effort spent to change it)

last but not least.. if you dont like wow.. dont play..go play one of the other games that are out.. there are plenty .. city of heros, eq, eq2, DAOC, AC, EVE Online... im sure that any of these would love to have your attention.

good luck on what ever you choose to do weather its sit infront of a tv where you have no interaction or play counterstrike with your friends or WOW with your guild.. the internet is breaking down international barriers faster than any leader has ever accomplished before..

All the media loving Blizzard is getting (and giving) is just going to make this number go up. Our local EB is opening at 10:30 pm on the fifteenth for a huge geek-fest. There will be a raffle for a collectors edition or something like that. Plus a WoW Card Game tourney.

Enough of a diversion to maybe buy a Wii! I'm ALL for it!

And I have half a mind (well that goes without saying) to go get my copy at 12:01 just to be a part of the event. This shit is going to go down in history!

What I want to know is how many millions of copies did they produce for day one sales? And will this add-on at $40/$70 set new records for sales?

These games have their place, they are not for immature audiences at all and they are not secretly hooking people and ripping them off.

Not for immature audiences? Hmm... when you have such a large player base, a portion of it must inevitably be immature, otherwise there wouldn't be any griefers.

Actually, according to Wikipedia's "List of countries by population", Kazakhstan is the 61st most populated country, just less than Chile and just more than Burkina Faso.

That is ridiculous. That many nerds out there with nothing better to do in life than pay to play a treadmill game?

I hate the way MMO's have no ending, and are clearly designed to extract money out of you and get you hooked. I think when people reach their 30's these kinds of games really don't appeal anymore. We tend to see through it too quickly. I can understand a month or two, of which you would pretty much see and do everything, but years?

F That!

No, Most of the players of MMO's are 20's-40's. They like these games because they have long term team play and competition elements and a continuous sense of accomplishment and community.

These games are not out there deceiving anyone or only hooking mindless teens. they have a lot more depth than murdering helpless people for 6 hours in games like GTA.

I am 38 and I play Anarchy Online off and on. Mostly because I like the Scifi thing and it has a nice feel to it. I will probably try Conan when it comes out because i am a huge R.E.H. Fan.

These games have their place, they are not for immature audiences at all and they are not secretly hooking people and ripping them off.

Especially when you consider all the content that is continuously added to games like AO and others.

I think it'd be cool if Azeroth was actually made into a real world country. Seriously, why not? The game is played by so many people that you could form a nation from them. They'd all be pretty good friends, too. Shared common background and all that.

Of course, it would be a monarchy

Seriously, if you are going to be a "hater", at least have the fucking sense to check your facts. Oh wait, its much easier to just pull them out of your ass...

It is also easy to fabricate numbers when you don't show anyone proof.

is that interactive games are replacing TV for a growing number of people.

Agree 100%

The only TV station I see is when I walk past the TV screens at work in the reception. The only time I use my TV at home is with my Revo.

WoW (And EQ2 before it) is a game that I spend anywhere from 0 to 5 hours a night playing. With my wife no less.
Our playtime I figure is almost exactly that of what our TV time would be if we had a subscription.
Were not addicted, as some are addicted to TV (Or WoW for that matter). We go out in the evenings, take the dog for walks etc, but our down time if we feel like it is spent running around killing Alliance kiddies.

And for those bitching about the cost I have two things to say to that:

1) you cant afford it, maybe your still living with your parents or its just out of your budget, in which case fair enough.

2) The cost appears to be a waste what with its monthly incurrence and no obvious progression. But my question is this, how much do you spend on cable a month (We spent more than $30 for a basic subscription)? and how much non interactive, non social, non thinking time do you spend watching TV?

Im guessing that I along with a lot of other WoW players come out ahead of you.. sorry.
