Most likely a subscriber only demo for the first few weeks but who knows.

I downloaded the Czech version in under two and a half hours, patched it to 1.04, ran the self-installing Czech to English hack, and BAMB! I'm in game.

So far it seems almost exactly how I remember OpF to be. Just more modernized graphics compared to OpF at the time. Looks good and runs well on my system.

There are a lot of options for graphics but even on their default setting the game looks good. Not awesome but good enough. If you turn things all up to max and push the view distance to max it looks far better but you may get a little chop. Of course there is no real reason to see for more than a few miles either way.

You have to qualify as an above average marksmen to even get the sniper training as you go through a little boot-camp target shoot, just like a few other games. It's all just basic tutorial stuff. The squad-leader tutorial is rough and pretty much requires you read the info on movement orders and controls. So far that part looks complicated but I'm sure after a few hours of dishing out orders it will become second nature. To start off you have several missions you have to complete before opening up more.

First one is solo mission very similar to OpF's stop the convoy mission. Plus there is a built in "my mission" generator with some very basic stuff. Not to mention the editor.

I'll bet you a hundred dollars the only difference with the NA release will be a pre-hacked English version (no user activated stuff required) with a NA box... nothing more besides the latest patch already installed.

So far it is well worth the 33.5 Euros (about $43 USD) I paid for it. At the link listed below. Thanks for the tip.

Edit: After playing through most the ground-pounder part of the tutorial and completing the first mission (after about a dozen attempts) I came away feeling like I was playing OpF... not the exact game since the graphics are better. It's hard core. The vehicle and character movements still feel kind of quirky. But it's one shot one kill and playing smart is the only way (short of a God-Mode hack) to win.

Though the game plays out differently each time (except the scripted parts of course) I finally took out the convoy of trucks, most of their escorts, and then used one of their vehicles to get to the extraction zone. As the helo hovered to land a damn patrol in the woods nearby shot and killed the pilot but I was able to use the turret mounted gun to take them out so that the co-pilot could bring her back in and pick me up. Damn good time.

I totally missed the boat on OFP but not this time gents! Come on January!

Looking forward to some large as life maps.

The island is huge but if you venture off from the main mission area you'll find it to be completely lifeless, even in the missions where you’re in a city or whatever you’ll have some really stupid NPC’s walking around but that’s it.

Can`t blame the publishers. There was no U.S. publisher chosen yet last I heard. They are holding out for the most money offered I think.

The problem with BF 2 is that they just made it a game. Not a sim. With the "game" mentality, they balanced all the weaps/classes to cancel each other out. So, it feels more like just a game. Forced Class reliance too.

Whereas BIS made a sim. The weap attributes for any given class match the real life characteristics. Way more preferable imho. The difference between playing a quaker that happens to have mil combat skins, and an actual mil combat experience.

It will be nice to have actual bullet drop again. And no freaking red cordoned off bounderies forcing choke points. OFP was the best I have played in the mil combat genre, since DF 2.

Yeah, the coops in OFP were awesome. Played em to death and even made a story-based coop mission once with lots of different ways and random stuff. The mission editor was really nice. I was actually feeling like a director of a movie. I only hated that some addons werent working on linux servers but worked on windows servers and vice versa.

And sorry I have to say it, but OFP blew BF2 out of the water before it even existed. No game ever came close to OFP. Its still the best FPS(imulator) I ever played, despite all the bugs it had.

I really cant wait for it either. I am in germany, but I rather wait for the full english version. It also gives me more time to upgrade my PC.

All I know is that this game needs to be released in the US at all costs. I really liked OpFlash '85 and it's expansions.

It's going to be. Once this game gets going, it's going to blow away Battlefield. It's much more moddable than OFP, there should be some very interesting stuff released.

For one thing, you could play 64-100 player coop against an army of *hundreds* of bots. Not just the usual capture the flag/territory stuff, but full-fledged story-based coop missions with complex objectives and cutscenes. OFP did this with 32 players against just a few bots (respawning+teleporting to simulate more than there really were) and it was alot of fun.

A BF2 mod could also be made, complete with a commander mode. Maybe also with some stuff that BF2 doesn't have.

It's going to take a few (edit: I meant a couple) hours since the server seems to be capped at 330Kb/s though we are talking about a Czech server so the distance may be a factor.

The learning curve for the first game wasn't that bad, at least when you were on foot. The biggest frustration I had was flying the A10s, but they finally cut those loose and put your pilot back onto the ground. I'll be honest, I'm not that concerned if the weapons in the game are a few steps above that of BF2, I like realism (though not to the point where I'm zeroing my weapon in-game!); because the first game in it's vanilla form was just point-and-shoot, too.

I heard it is very "hard-core" you have to qualify for weapons and the like (just like AA). And some say the weapons are almost to accurate. I have the week off and I am getting bored of the beta (too many hours logged already) so I may just take the risk. It's only $43 USD at the current exchange rate not to shabby.

The biggest draw-back for most will be the steep learning curve after play BF games.

Hell at this point there is nothing else I really want game-wise... and I still have a few hundred left on the old company debt card. I'll let you know later today or tomorrow.

I just hope this game has as big a mod community as the previous version had. Hell, the OpF demo itself had huge amounts of mods.

Fileplanet has it confirmed that the ArmA demo will be released this Thursday. So at least we'll have that until God knows when it's released in the US.

OFP has pretty much been my favorite game (shooter at least) so I can't wait for ArmA.

Incase you didnt know, publishers make up releasedates, not the developers. If it was up to the devs they would have polished it further before releasing, which is exactly whats happening now.

I'll wait, the original release was almost beta. By the time it hits retail in UK it should be much better.
