Out of the Blue

Argh, I'm finally caught up after a late start this morning, as MrsBlue failed in her duties as hearer of the alarm clock. This is particularly poor timing, as I was already set to skip out on the early side this evening to hook up with my buddies for our rescheduled holiday carousing (apologies in advance for matching my late start with an early departure). I hear the clamor for a pear review (heck, it may have drowned out the alarm clock this morning), so rest assured, that like my opinion on so many unimportant things, my thoughts on the worthiness of the Royal Rivieras will come to the surface soon enough.

Pyschonaughts is quite simply one of the best games I have ever played. Right up there in my top 10.

I've only played the demo, but I didn't really like the characters. The platforming level in the demo was very straightforward. I prefer the open levels of the 3D Mario games... Are any of the other stages more open?

Second with nin on Trauma Center for the Wii/Rev. Zelda's a mixed bag, IMO. It's a great to be sure, but not much point if you've not enjoyed the series before.

Get a chance, get Pyschonauts (as was already mentioned), and Beyond Good and Evil if you're going to set up your PS2.

You can. I have about 8 linked up to mine. I only own two iPods, but thanks to Anapod's retarded activation system it doesn't realise when I reinstall it that it's the same one.

Katamrai is pretty cool too.

As for Zelda, Ive never played any of the previous games, but this is just a really solid, fun RPG. Im sure theres a bunch of 'in; stuff im missing, but its a fun game, a touch linear, but pretty damn good nonetheless.

Im just really getting into the pure fun, no bullcrap type of games recently.

I gotta check elebits and COD3 out after xmas.

Zelda is Zelda, like it or hate it.

Ok, brace yourself.

I've never played Zelda. Any of them. At least not for more than a couple minutes in a store display or at a friend's house.

So Zelda really does nothing for me.

Need for Speed is amazingly fun, using the remote to drive

I've seen the commercials w/ Excita-truck and it looked fun. It's on my "maybe" list. Like I said, I'm willing to wait a bit (as in, a few months).

q[And of course, there's a few Gamecube classics still available that you should seek out, once you get the console (RE4, Timesplitters 2, Smash Bros, FZero, etc).]

Yeah, there's a few GC titles I'd be very interested in playing, especially w/ Heather. I figure my eldest will be 3 by the time we get it, so maybe she'll even be able to play some.

Just hooked the PS2 back up tonight actually. Heather bought Pyschonauts from Amazon for <$10 a few weeks ago and I've been meaning to play it some. Never finished Katamari either (or started the 2nd one).

Here we go!

http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=21577

Karraker's comments come after research firm NPD published a new report showing that 197,000 PS3 units were sold during November - and since the console quickly sold out, that means the number of units shipped was less than half SCEA's target of 400,000 for launch day.

The report also said that 476,000 Nintendo Wii consoles were sold during the same period, with the only next-gen console not in short supply - the Xbox 360 - shifting 511,000 units. However, Sony's current-gen machine is still going strong; 664,000 PS2s were sold during the course of the month.

I'd like to see Mario or some other games out first.
Nintendo America president says the Mario game for Wii (Super Mario Galaxy) will arrive between March and December 2007. Kind of a large window there. Mario Party 8 in March.
A message of hope to those who choose to hear it,
and a warning to those who do not.

And did I miss this story (entirely possible) -- Sony only shipped 197k consoles to the NA market in November instead of the 400k they'd claimed? That's pretty damn sad.

Oh yeah. It made a few sites...

And I'm quite sure we'll be getting a Wii sooner or later. Heather was asking about it last week . I'm willing to wait a bit though; I'm not particularly interested in Zelda, and although Wii sports looks interesting, I'd like to see Mario or some other games out first.

Yeaaa!

Game-wise:
Zelda is Zelda, like it or hate it.

Trauma Center is fun, and different.

Need for Speed is amazingly fun, using the remote to drive (you turn it sideways, hold it in both hands, and then tilt the ends as if you were turning the wheel in a given direction). Before trying it, I have NO real interest in the game, and now I'm totally hooked...

The Virtual Console needs it's library to grow, and the longer you wait, the better it'll be. It's not bad now, but there's a ton of stuff they're sitting on.

And of course, there's a few Gamecube classics still available that you should seek out, once you get the console (RE4, Timesplitters 2, Smash Bros, FZero, etc).

What would be really interesting, is to take those sales figures and graph them against the number of days they have been out, and then curve them out over the next year or so.

The problem with that is that you get wacky figures because all of the consoles are supply constrained in the first few months.

And did I miss this story (entirely possible) -- Sony only shipped 197k consoles to the NA market in November instead of the 400k they'd claimed? That's pretty damn sad.

The sales figures from the site nin linked to are also rather interesting -- I had no idea that Nintendo had managed to produce 1.6M Wii yet.

And I'm quite sure we'll be getting a Wii sooner or later. Heather was asking about it last week . I'm willing to wait a bit though; I'm not particularly interested in Zelda, and although Wii sports looks interesting, I'd like to see Mario or some other games out first.

Im too lazy to do it, but I think I can guess how it would look (ie Revo, 360, PS3)..

At the same time I see stacks fo 360's in Best Buy etc and 0 supply of the PS3.

when that happens you better be prepared to knock that grandad out the way to get your hands on a spare remote or nunchuk

Have you seen any of the movies for WarioWare:Smooth Moves? It looks like it's going to be a riot...

Its getting chilly here in AZ, its like 55F

As for the Revo comments and Sony etc. Sony can make all the attachments they like, but without every user being guaranteed to have one the number of developers who will make games for it will be limited. Its like the issue with an optional HD for the 360, because its an option Devs cannot guarantee that it will be there, therefore they try to develop assuming it wont be there.

I think the interesting thing to come will actually be the next generation (Assuming Sony hasent pulled out of the hardware market by that point (My money is on this)).

At that point MS and Sony will have to make a solid decision, do they continue to target for the traditional crowd, OR do they try and target the same markets as nintendo, each has its pro's and cons, and I can only imagine the development conversations going on at MS and Sony at the moment as to what to do for the future.

In my opinion I see the Revo winning this generation, every shipment sells out within minutes, and these are shipments of 20-40 units at a time. At the same time I see stacks fo 360's in Best Buy etc and 0 supply of the PS3. Want to know why theres no Mario at launch? maybe Nintendo is waiting for sales to slow down, once units are allowed to sit in store for a little while, out comes Mario. And its only a matter of time for a brain age game to come out, when that happens you better be prepared to knock that grandad out the way to get your hands on a spare remote or nunchuk (Thank god I brought 2 spares at launch!)

Just my thoughts

Speaking of fun weather, last night I called my step-brother (who lives in the heart of Seattle) to find out what to get his daughter for Christmas and found out he was on day three of having no electricity. The storm that hit Washington Thursday night left a good million people without power. Anyway, they just moved into a hotel room with their hyperactive five year old who's school also has no power. Good times!

Well, at least he can revel in the success of the Seahawks!

Uh, no wait, .....

Yeah, that's right, it would be almost entirely a west coast phenomenon. The last time I actually remember El Nino and its effects was back in '97, and I was living in Arizona. There a typhoon come up the Gulf of California/Baja Peninsula and give us a little scare.

The El Nino/La Nina oscillation generally has a huge effect on the weather patterns for the west coast. These storms have gone completely against that trend. I think one could make a case for the effects of climate change having a very strong influence on our latest weather patterns. At any rate, climate change is having very real effects in the west, the most striking being the mountain pine beetle epidemic.

Of course, you practically never hear about this sort of thing from the Eastern media. After all, only hippies and rednecks live out west

it's not even a La Nina year.

I don't even know if that has much to do with weird weather anymore. The climate across the entire Midwest has changed considerably in the past 25 years. There's the odd warm spell in winter, sure, but the last five years have been especially dry.
