New Alien Games

Sega will hatch 'Alien' games on the Hollywood Reporter (thanks Dark Horizons and Ant) reveals plans for new PC and Console games based on the series of Alien movies, making specific mention of an RPG and an FPS, with the first game to be released in 2008. It is specified that this deal is separate from the new Aliens versus Predator movies, but the fan of the third and fourth Alien flicks will be disappointed to know that these games will not follow the specific plot of any of the movies, though conversations are underway to secure the participation of principal actors like Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henriksen. Sega says "We're taking licensing to the next level with this franchise," and the article also makes mention of other Fox properties with the potential for similar treatment in the future: Big Trouble in Little China, The Fly, and Fantastic Voyage. SEGA and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising to Bring Alien Franchise to Next-Gen Systems is the subsequent official announcement of this news that offers a slight variant on these details, saying 2009 is actually when to expect the first game, and making liberal use of the term "next-generation," which is of course codeword for consoles, with no mention of the PC or any specific platform. Here's a bit from the Hollywood Reporter:
Mike Gallo, senior producer of the "Alien" games at Sega, said the new games will not follow the strict story lines of any of the four films in the series but instead will provide a new experience by drawing from the history and lore that is the foundation of the films.

"We'll go out of our way to tie the games into the films in unique ways," he said. "We're also looking at all 'Alien' source material for inspiration, in addition to the films. We may incorporate some characters that fans know and love, and we may let gamers find answers to questions that were left unanswered in the movies."

Lol, missed that post. You lucky bastard (about the beta). I completely forgot about Magestorm! Probably because I always got destroyed/owned and unconciously phased it out of memory.

Clan iA (Illegal Aliens) ftw!

Anyone remember Aliens Online? Just alittle Duke Nukem engine-based online FPS made by Kesmai/Mythic which was touted on Gamestorm for quite awhile and then on AOL just alittle bit before GS went under...amazing times with that game.

Yep, I posted about it earlier. What a fun game that was. I was in GS's beta program, they had some really great games in the pipeline before they pulled the plug. And yeah, MPBT and Air Warrior were great fun, and I'm still waiting for a real successor to Magestorm. Dark Messiah didn't even come close.

One of the better Alien based games along w/the AvPs (including the Jaguar version). I could go on and on about that one game and it's amazing community + revolutionary online gameplay (at the time)...anyone who was a part of it can tell you. Ah...sweet untainted squad-based (the only way you'd have a chance to survive w/ranks for each species as well) Alien vs Marine action...a few years before AvP mind you...:) Being a virtual queen was never so much fun...

Only downside was the 9$ a month subscrip fee for Gamestorm. =\. There were many crapfests on their list of games and a few gems, namely AO + the Battletech series + a WWII flight sim + some old-school MMOs.

Yeah, a Fantastic Voyage game could be loads of fun, if handled well.

Heck, I'm surprised I never heard of anyone modifying Descent 3 or Forsaken to make a Fantastic Voyage-type game...

Let's see what Sega has up their sleeves...

Oh, don't get me wrong: I'm a fan of the quicksave feature. After all, you don't have to use it if you don't want to. I just think in the case of AVP the limited saves actually helped make the game more intense.

Part of what made the Marine campaign in the first one so good was that you knew you couldn't abuse the Quick-save feature

And that's a total matter of age-old opinion. The fact is that having the ability to save anywhere trumps not being able to because you *don't have to use it*. I probably still have my Computer Gaming World whose review of AvP exclaimed that its biggest flaw was the lack of save anywhere. In fact, I believe the heading to the article was, "In Space, No One Will Let You Save," or something along that vein. Anyways, AI in the first game was also much less forgiving, and maps tended to be far darker.

What I'd like to see, as mentioned somewhere down the page, is some inclusion of squad play. First person or no, my Colonial Marine squad needs to stay frosty and check those corners.

I hope they never explain the pilot/space jockey race in alien, its the mystery that makes them interesting. It leaves everything up to your imagination.
If they explain it, then it'll just be like "oh ok then, sure whatever, that wasnt so great"
They should just drop odd hints here and there that never really explain much but just make you wonder more.
Besides, the story isnt really about them anyway.

I thought AVP 2 was a good game, but it lacked the intensity of the first one: being able to save anytime you wanted really killed the suspense.

Part of what made the Marine campaign in the first one so good was that you knew you couldn't abuse the Quick-save feature: levels were really large, and you only had a limited number of saves (or none at all).

Trespasser let you see your boobs. Tribes 2 let you see your feet. You can see your feet in Call of Juarez, I believe. Shadow Warrior had hand-to-hand combat. Duke Nukem 3D had foot-to-face combat. Chronicles of Riddick had melee too.

But I digress.

Not sure how they can make an Alien game that isn't the same thing as AvP. Really not sure how they could make an Alien RPG.

Now what about the Original Alien comics "Alien Earth War" Dark Horse Comics. Are they going to take that story line into consideration? In the comic it shows Ripley and Newt and has reference to the movies. I just hope they tie all that into the store also. I never was a big fan of AVP because it didn't follow the original comic story line (which was way better than the movies) and i feel the movie left a lot out and could of been done way better. So i hope they dont make this game suck as bad as the other games they have put out with the name Alien on it. A FPS would be cool something kinda like F*E*A*R in the way that the game play was done would be awesome. That game is great in the fact that you can use hand to hand combat as well as your guns i like that. I cant say no other FPS dose that or even lets you see your feet like fear dose hehe. You would of thought a game like HL2 would of done that not FEAR but oh well. anyways i hope they look at all the best FPS and other games to make this game the best it can be.

The biggest problems with AVP co-op were smartguns tracking friendlies, and the massive RPGs.

You tended to die more from your friends than aliens.

In all honesty I thought that was part of the frantic fun, but one of the kids I played with got very worked up over being mowed down by a smartgun...

I guess that's what happens when you try to follow up Ridley Scott then James Cameron.

I never really much cared for Ridley Scott. His movie (Alien) was great for what it was and the time it was released. But some of the stuff he's done in the 15 years didn't do much for me. Blackhawk Down wasn't too bad, just too much flag waving.

He's a little hit or miss, but when he hits...damn!

Alien
Blade Runner
Legend
Gladiator
Kingdom of Heaven (Most people didn't like this one due to the cut, but the extended/director's cut on dvd is fucking awesome.)

and started pulling new alien "characteristics" out of its ass.

Like what? The only thing I can think of directly was them swimming, but given Giger's original design of them, it's not that far out. The hybrid alien, yeah, they could've shelved that one.

Did anyone here play Aliens Online on GameStorm?

You know, I signed up for that game two months before it finally went down in 2000. It was decent.

Did anyone here play Aliens Online on GameStorm? That was one hell of a game. I was heartbroken when they shut it down. For anyone who missed out, there's an old review on GameSpot that covers it quite well. The graphics were crap even then but the gameplay was way ahead of its time (or not, if you consider Team Fortress to be the definitive game of its type). And to think it was made by the same company that would later produce crap like Dark Age of Camelot and subsequently get assimilated by EA.

Man I miss GameStorm, they had some real fun games.

They probably should've gotten Marc Caro to direct Alien 4, since he's the one from the Caro-Jeunet duo who really wanted to do scifi. After they separated ways Jeunet started doing films he really wanted to make like Amelie and A Very Long Engagement.
