I really applaud Nintendo for having such a strong start. They clearly showed that most of the people don't really care about 42" Plasma displays yet. I think it's the best choice for a family console. It's not the right thing for me since I'm a hardcore gamer and I need my Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas, Dead Rising etc. but it is funny how Nintendo gives the big ones some serious headache.

Every time I turn around someone is proclaiming that the porn industry chose HDDVD so it will win, or that Vivid chose bluray so it will win.

1) "The Porn Industry" doesn't have some regulating body making decisions for them. Some companies will do one thing, some companies will do others.
2) Vivid, possibly the only company that matters, has said they haven't made a decision one way or the other, but expect to support both.

Nobody needs blu ray capacity unless they are blatantly misusing(or not using at all) compression. That'd be a pretty retarded thing to abandon, even if the capacity exists that you could.

HDDVD will win the war.

Guess who has a huge hand in steering this war because they hold the largest percentage of sales/production on the home tape/disc market?

The porn industry.....and they announced HDDVD as their medium of choice.

That's an excellent point, and why VHS won out. The porn industry chose it...

I think Nintendo will need all the money they can make. In developing the Wii replacement, I'd think they'd want and need to match the others and won't have the novelty advantage next time.

We have the Wii and 360 here and, no matter what, Wii is the hands down winner for family fun... and muscle pain. It also attracts people who don't normally play to at least try and they typically love it, too.

However, I wouldn't mind betting Microsoft is looking at some way to add this to the 360. The 360 lacks any really good kids or family type games. Still, if they could pull a controller system like Nintendo's out of their ass and use Live to feed out graphically less intensive type sports games. I think they'd be on a winner and it would be a fairly cost effective solution for them.

I love our Wii and the funtimes it's given us so far, but take out the fun factor of the control scheme and Golden Axe and it doesn't do a lot for me personally.

What sucks here is that, had nintendo been able to keep up with demand, they could have ruled this xmas...I mean stomped the shit out of the other two...

And in the long run, they'll need that...because the PS3 will eventually get going...

Why will they need that? Nintendo is already making money on every game, every console, and every controller and accessory sold. NoA/NoJ aren't concerned about what Sony's sales are like.

Regardless of who "wins" this war, profits wise it's going to be Nintendo

Regular old graphics will not fill up a standard DVD. the only time you need blueray is when you have a LOT or audio and FMV. A bajillion pollies won't do it.

Yes there will be some japanese RPG's out there taking up multiple disks, they do like the FMV, but it will be hours between disk changes. I'd prefer to keep my 200 bucks and swap out a disk every 20 hours.

Wow, Tekken 5 HD looks pretty shit... graphics that poor would be laughed at on PC so I don't see why it would be any different on a next-gen console. Yet another example of a rushed game.

But eventually they'll be pushing the PS3's limits with bajillion polygon models and so on. And then they'll be glad of Blu-Ray capacity discs.

But yeah, you do get the feeling that jamming a BR drive into the PS3 has been more trouble than it's worth. But then who knows - maybe BR will "win" the format war and Sony will be laughing.

Lemmings! is a blast and a must have for PS3 owners. Old or not it is still a fun game and for only $2.99.

As far as larger storage... I don't suppose you guys have seen that Blue Dragon will be on 3 dvd's.

Each lvl in lair is pushing 4gigs, so by 2nd gen bluray is going to be a big advantage

How much would it be if they tried even the simplest form of compression?

Yeah.

How many devs truly wanted or needed the space in blueray? One, two maybe? If lair is taking up that much space without FMV or sound, they're doing something seriously wrong with their compression.

because it was part of the stuff the devs asked for, they wanted a powerful machine with lots of storage

They may have asked for storage, but I seriously doubt they asked for Blu-Ray by name...

they wanted a powerful machine with lots of storage, thats what they got and are using right now.

But that's not my problem. If storage capacity is what they were after, then maybe a separate solution could've been conceived. Instead, Sony wanted to get the BR player out the most expedient way possible and included it with the PS3. So, essentially you're stuck with a high priced electronic you don't necessarily want (or need) and have to pay for the increased price if you want a PS3 at all.

I know Sony's already loosing a lot of money on each PS3 they sell, but come on.

Besides, it is convenient having your entertainment devices contained to one unit, but the shit does wear out faster!

Sony doesn't have the best track record for equipment reliability either. Early PS2 models were plagued with issues, mostly about the DVD drive. I doubt Sony has learned their lesson.

Not to mention Blu-ray should never have been invented in the first place. We could have avoided format wars for the rest of the forseeable future, but Sony had to go and screw all that up.

You cant have the bluray drive seperate because it was part of the stuff the devs asked for, they wanted a powerful machine with lots of storage, thats what they got and are using right now. Each lvl in lair is pushing 4gigs, so by 2nd gen bluray is going to be a big advantage. And with the majority of studios pishing out bluray vs HDDVD then its totaly warented.

That's why I'm a advocate of keeping your components separate. As the articles states clearly, the cost alone of the PS3 is raised with the inclusion of the BR drive, and if you really don't want the damn thing, you're still forced to pay for it anyway if you even want a PS3 at all.

Besides, it is convenient having your entertainment devices contained to one unit, but the shit does wear out faster!
