MMO Firefly

Firefly Reborn as Online Universe on Wired News (thanks Shacknews) has word that Firefly, the late lamented science fiction television series, is going to be making a return in the form of an MMORPG from Multiverse. The official announcement is expected tomorrow, but in the meantime, Wired is wired with some details on the game, which may be released as soon as 2008. Here's a bit:
What made the show special was the wry, often self-deprecating humor of its characters, from the captain with the checkered past to the unwittingly sexy engineer, the dull hunk of a mercenary with a girl's name, and the mysterious young woman passenger with special gifts.

The online version will move away from those central characters -- after all, there's only one Mal Reynolds. In an MMORPG, "everybody has to have their own story," says Multiverse co-founder and executive producer Corey Bridges.

"Television series can be really good properties to turn into MMOs, because when you make a TV series, not only do you need great characters, but you need to create a full, rich, compelling place," Bridges says. "If you're doing science fiction, you have to really think it out and create an incredibly rich environment that is compelling in its own right, and worth exploring and going back to week after week. That's what Joss Whedon did with Firefly."

The universe of Firefly and its spinoff film, Serenity, featured everything from Old West-style towns to futuristic urban environments, gritty spaceships and pastoral retreats -- freedom fighters, oppressive government agents, smugglers, outlaws, mercenaries, trader, townsfolk, futuristic geishas and a race of corrupted humans known as the Reavers.

Bringing those environments and character types to life as an online game will be a challenge: Multiverse is not a game developer, but rather a platform provider whose product is still in beta. Instead of making the game itself, the company will hire a development team that will craft the virtual galaxy using Multiverse tools.

"We want to find someone who wants to do something unique and fun and interesting, not just a re-skin of World of Warcraft or Star Wars Galaxies," Bridges says.

Because the underlying technology is already in place, "I feel confident that we'll see something the public can play sometime in 2008," he adds.

I feel sorry for the engine developers. They are probably working out of a garage on no budget in their spare time. I feel sorry for them and might almost cry.

OMG I remember this company. They have some of the most horrific looking games signed up for their service. The icing on the cake is the top one on this page "Force of Arms". Click on the "60 second video":

I'ts so bad I'm surprised it hasn't become a meme.

Actually I don't mind the idea of a Generic MMO Engine being made so that people can hack about and have a bit of fun creating worlds .... especially when it's FREE.

But trying to make a commercial game from the engine? Hmmm .... it's goingto need a lot more spit and polish to make that game shiny.

It's even more sad/pathetic if you look at their image gallery:

Yeah, they look a lot like Tribes - not Tribes 2, the original Tribes.

The only thing I'm curious about this game is whether or not a person could play as a reaver.

I'm mostly disappointed b/c I'm a huge fan of the orginal series, and I'm sure that his MMO will be a horrible flop. People (network exects, mostly) might look at it and see it as proof that the franchise isn't marketable, and hence be less likely to resurrect it for new episodes.

It's even more sad/pathetic if you look at their image gallery:

Bwwaahahahah.. I went and installed their demo engine. What a piece of SHIT! You know, I'm down for anyone trying to make a Sci-Fi MMO, because I'm sick and fucking tired of Fantasy MMOs. But for these asshats to think anyone would seriously play an MMO on their '1992 quality', DirectX 0.93 game engine, is a more than a joke.

Piss off losers. Let someone with a real game engine take a shot at this intellectual property.

I think this has potential for sure and they sure could do a ton of MMO stuff with that universe. But I will be very surprised if this team pulls it off well.

It may well flop, but I can't off the top of my head come up with a better universe to make a game that handles trading and piracy, along the same line as the privateer series than the Firefly universe.

If they can manage something like that (albeit in an MMO style) and some interesting planets to explore on foot/mule, then I'm sold. I'd be tempted to buy it just to show that there are some people out there still interested in Firefly, even if the game isn't absolutely brilliant.

the setting for Firefly was interesting.. but its Whedon's writing and character development/dialog that really made the show killer

MMO is dumb idea...

Can you say, FLOP. Great show, bad MMO. I doubt it could be anything but a massive strategy game, I couldn't see a rpg/shooter competing with the likes of WOW and UO

But that depends entirely on who they find to, you know, build the actual game!

Still, if they manage to include well implemented spaceflight, cool ground based combat, space stations and player based contracts, this could be very nice to play around in.

Yeah, I agree I don't like the idea of it becoming an MMO. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, but thought the movie was weak. I don't really blame the makers, it seemed like they had to make it somewhat accessible to those who aren't familiar to the show.
