Galactic Command Announcement

This press release offers the promised official announcement of Galactic Command, the next space combat game from 3000AD that will make use of the ever-more-trendy episodic distribution format, as well as a Universal Combat Collector's Edition, containing all eight titles in the UC/Battlecruiser series. The release of the Collector's Edition and the first episode in Galactic Command are both expected in March 2007, and here's word on the new game:
When Derek Smart and his team set out to develop a fast paced space combat shooter, they didn’t want to do just your regular run-of-the-mill shooter. Instead they wanted to blend in all the elements that made the space combat genre of yester years awesome, with the current generation technology found in our industry recognized suite of games.

The result is a visceral pure action aerial and space combat action shooter with massive scale combat engagements, an intricate story line campaign, interesting and challenging missions which take place both in space and on planet surfaces, as well as all the graphics eye candy that your system can muster. Throw in an intuitive help system, easy to use GUI interface and control scheme (game pad support!) and what you have is a game you can pick up and be playing like an expert in ten minutes or less.

This episodic (four in all) game tells the story of the struggle between the Terran Military forces of Galactic Command and their opposition counterparts, the Insurgents, who are fast becoming the new threat to the organization’s stability and security.

The GCV-Excalibur and GCV-Merlin are two new attack carriers developed by GALCOM and on their first maiden voyage are tasked with engaging the Insurgents. As the leader of a combat flight crew of fighters assigned to the Excalibur, your mission is to carry out your assignments while protecting your fleet from being destroyed by hostile forces operating deep behind enemy lines.

Episode one is included in the full game, with three additional episodes (each sold separately) to follow every two to three months. GALCOM is scheduled to be released in Q1/07 (March) at an MSRP of $29.95. Future episodes are sold separately at $19.95

Looks like somebody is still watching BSG.

What, he's decided to now soil the great memories of Wing Commander and its various offspring? Hoofah.

I wonder what it's like to sit at your keyboard typing up these ridiculous announcements while referring to yourself in the third person.

Yeah this game will be a throwback to yesterday... I wonder if I'll have to run it from a dos prompt and make sure that himem.sys and emm386 are enabled. *snickers*

This is the same game he's sold 10 times over. Although it's nice to see he gave up on those crappy aliens of his and now has an excuse as to why the enemy has the same exact arsenal as you do.

This game could be great, I have to give credit for its sheer depth... but this is just another halfa$$ed effort.

supposedly he has a 360 game in development. I'd be really curious to see how that looks/plays.

Compared to the initial announcement Friday, now it seems there's nothing to get excited about. Based on the Firing Squad interview, it sounds like he's going 360-first and hoping MS approves a PC release, which really sounds like it won't happen. Besides, even if it was approved the controls will likely be cut down for the 360 anyhow, which takes away a lot of the potential fun.

PS We may as well get DS in here, soooo...

~sighs~

We all know that these aren't "games" in the traditional sense of the word. They're like a contiguous fucking train wreck that we're watching in slow motion over the years.

Are we going with episodic, self-published titles now because no publisher will touch us? The lawsuits and dented Coke machines have sullied and tarnished our reputation just a wee bit too much?

Sure. Let us know when you're ready to join us.

Yes, and I haven't seen what McDonald's will be offering in the next Happy Meal either, but I can guess that it's not going to be a diamond ring based on past history.

His previous games were complete and utter crap, with press releases promising the world and delivering a roach motel. Expecting differently just means you're a fool.

I don't think the screenshots look very good. The ship textures look low-res and the stars in the background look like a basic photoshop lensflare. I could do better...

Really though, it's all about the gameplay...

Frankly, I could do better models than in those shots. They look plain, low resolution, messy and banal.

When Derek Smart and his team

What "team"? Does Derek have a mouse in his pocket?

EDIT: Or has his ego finally splintered off into a split personality?

I, for one, will reserve my opinion until I try the demo - if there is one. Despite all the negative comments thrown at Derek Smart, he's trying to create something fun and many people just ignore that. His Battlecruiser games weren't for everyone and neither will GALCOM be, but at least it's an option. Of course, there are many more space-based games now than there were 10 years ago.

Anyone got screenshots of his new UI ?

Um, you do realize we're talking about Derek Smart here? It's been a while since we've had a good DS thread. He may not be able to design games for shit, but he sure is amusing.

I'll have you know the Burger King games were far better than any Derek Smart games/demos I've tried (and at $4 a pop, cheaper too!). They are by no mean excellent games, but at least they're a fun distraction and actually are finished products. There's no reason to sink so low as to compare them to Derek Smart games.

I don't buy into hype/antihype anymore, but in total honesty Smart's games have done *far* more wrong than right.

It doesn't matter how good any aspect of his games are if the rest of it is so glaringly bad. I think he needs to learn where to draw the lines and give equal focus to the entire package for once.
