Four years is a long time in the game/tech industry.
I actually preferred Jedi Academy to Outcast though, the customizable characters and the ability to use dual or saberstaves was something I thought was sorely missing from Outcast.
I disagree about the "four years" thing. I still play Half Life 1, and that is eight years old. That's what I call a blast from the past. Jedi Outcast may not have top of the line graphics, but gameplay-wise it stands right up there with recent shooters. This may seem like a sad commentary on the state of game evolution, but shooters haven't changed since Half Life. Sure, we've added physics, but did that actually change the game? Not as much as mouselook.

Jedi Academy was cool in the sense that it let you customize your character, but the dual/staff saber thing has been overdone. They should be the (extremely rare) exception, and not the rule. Anyway, Jedi Outcast had a much better story, and you got to fight alongside Luke Skywalker!

The best Star Wars games in my book was :

Tie Fighter
Jedi Outcast & Jedi Academy
Knights of the Old Republic
Episode 1 Pod Racer

Dark Forces , Jedi Knight , Republic Commando were really good games too , but for me they didn't have the lasting appeal of the other games that made me play them more than once.
X-wing and the other SW space sims are not on my list because IMO Tie Fighter was the best of the lot.

KOTOR 2 could have been great if it had gotten more TLC , and time enough to complete it.
It could also be that Obsidian wasn't up to the job .. a suspicion I've begun to have since my first encounters with NWN2 , which also feels buggy and unpolished.

Pod Racer is on my list (no one else mentioned it) because no other game have ever given me such a sense of SPEED as this game.
Also the control of the pod racer was just perfect.
If you failed to make a turn or avoid an obstacle , it wasn't because of your pod or the controls , but because you failed to react in time .. It really requires those lightning fast Jedi reflexes .. and I love that.
It's all about skill and speed and once you master it , you truly feel like you've accomplished something.

1. X-Wing (Hands down)
2. Rebel Assault 1 (because it was technically awesome)
3. X-Wing Alliance (just because it was the last SW fighter sim)
4. Knights of the Old Republic 2 (The story was simply stunning from the start to the end)
5. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (especially the MP was awesome)

TIE-Fighter and X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter were nice games too, but somehow I dont remember any specific mission from either game. But I remember almost all of them from X-Wing.

Anyone remember in the 90's there were 2 packs of Lucasarts games. One included X-wing and Tie-Fighter I believe (though IMHO Tie-Fighter was vastly superior to X-wing :p) The other was their successful action games.

I may pick this one up. I don't own half of those and always wanted to.

Everyone, if you have x-wing alliance, be sure to download the Tie Fighter Total conversion mod for it. It brings like 80% of the TIE Fighter missions to the XWA engine, along with full the voice overs. It's pretty awesome!

You can try playing TIE Fighter on DOSBOX or VDMSound, but I dunno.. it's a bit of a hassle and I have slowdown problems. And the TIE Fighter edition made for Windows (which can be patched for compatibility with WinXP) has no in-flight music. Which sucks!!! So the XWA mod is the best bet, IMO.
But I still miss the music. I've been humming one of the TIE Fighter themes for a few days now

I know only KOTOR and Jedi Outcast are top-drawer, but that's a lot of value, even if Empire at War is too geneic, Republic Commando is too easy (gotta love those production values though) and Battlefront is too shite.

3.5 out of 5 isn't bad for $40 (or £25)

Definitely not best of, definitely just most recent.

A shame, I hate Star Wars and find it terribly boring, yet even I adored Tie Fighter, and the less-good but more-fun X-Wing v. Tie Fighter.

1. Tie Fighter
2. Dark Forces 2 - JK
3. X-Wing
4. Dark Forces
5. Jedi Knight 2

I don't agree with the order (1 & 2 should be switched, IMO) but damn if you didn't hit the nail on the head with that.

Dark Forces 2 (Jedi Knight 1, I hate when people call it that) was one of the first game I seriously played online. Granted, MS zone gaming service wasn't the fastest of places, and the game was full of Dragonball fanboys using cheats, but when you found decent non-cheating players it was easily the best Deathmatch style game ever made.

More like "Star Wars: The RECENT Best of PC," although I will give props to Republic Commando for being a good SW game.

And where's Lego Star Wars?

How the hell did Battlefront get in and Tie Fighter get left out?

Because it's only more recent titles. It should be called Star Wars: The Best of PC in the last 4 years.

I'm sure there are a ton of issues with Windows XP and those older games to the point where they decided it was too costly to re-release. The newer ones they can release relatively untouched. Basically they're lazy bastards.
