Ships Ahoy - The History Channel Civil War

Activision and The History Channel announce the release of their new Civil War game:
Minneapolis, MN – November 10, 2006 – Get ready to experience the intensity and chaos of the war that divided a nation in THE HISTORY CHANNEL® Civil War from Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI). Gamers can relive history through the eyes of a Confederate or Union soldier and experience such famous battles as Gettysburg, Bull Run and Antietam. THE HISTORY CHANNEL Civil War has been rated “T” (Teen) by the ESRB and is currently available for the Xbox® 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft for $49.99, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system for a suggested retail price of $39.99 and the PC for $29.99.

“THE HISTORY CHANNEL Civil War gives gamers the chance to experience the defining moment in our nation’s history,” said David Oxford, Activision Publishing, Inc. “We utilized reference materials from THE HISTORY CHANNEL like topographical maps and photographs, and did extensive research on combat methods, weaponry and more to ensure that players would have a unique and authentic Civil War experience.”

“THE HISTORY CHANNEL is always looking for ways to make history experiential for our viewers, and gaming is a fantastic way to do that,” said Carrie Trimmer, Director of Licensing, A&E Television Networks. “Activision has taken great care in recreating the wartime conditions that both Confederate and Union soldiers faced, and I think the game will deliver the type of authentic experience viewers expect from THE HISTORY CHANNEL brand.”

THE HISTORY CHANNEL Civil War casts players in the role of a Confederate or Union soldier battling through 12 of the most famous battles in U.S. history. Each mission is introduced with a documentary video describing the historic moments in a battle, movements of armies, local fights, historical photos and battle statistics. Gamers will experience the intense conflicts of the Civil War in famous locations like Little Round Top and Lookout Mountain to the diverse landscapes of train yards, saw mills and military forts while using bayonets, sabers, the butt of a gun and even their fists to take down the enemy. A wide arsenal of rifles, multiple types of grenades, exploding artillery, revolvers, muskets and more are at the soldier’s disposal to set charges, place explosives, sabotage enemy lines, destroy buildings and more to complete mission objectives.

The thing I always seem to find on when I want to chill with some History are those goddamn Modern Marvel shows...an hour show about Giant Dumptrucks or some such shit!

Hm? I always thought Modern Marvels was a pretty interesting show. Even if it IS something like giant dumptrucks, it still is able to be somewhat interesting.

The only documentaries I've watched recently that haven't insulted my intelligence were made by the BBC.

Yeah, with you on that. When I see 'BBC' in the opeingin credits of a documentary, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be an automatic win.

Wish BBC America showed more of those, instead of the 5 year old Hyacinth Bucket sitcoms and house renovation BS. There's no accounting for taste, eh?

lowest common denom wins again!

No. That's Fox News. The History Channel takes what would otherwise be mundane subjects and at least makes them interesting and understandable to the viewer. I mean, if you need the illusion of high-minded learning, crack open a text book.

AMEN! I have been disgusted by the History Channels descent into mediocre bullshit. lowest common denom wins again!

Yea, pretty much. There's still plenty of good programming that's not ridiculous like that, just during primetime they dredge out the shit.

Though their recent Shootout show seems pretty cool: http://www.history.com/minisites/shootout/

This trend has been repeated by pretty much every TV documentary channel (Discovery, TLC, National Geographic, etc.). Indeed, it seems like they're all trying to tap into the giant base of functionally illiterate people. The only documentaries I've watched recently that haven't insulted my intelligence were made by the BBC.

a value game on the 360 = $50??? I thought the lower priced games were like $30?

Anyway, I'm interested to see how this one plays.

Or whatever the new or favorite boogieman for the week is. Sometimes it's global warming or something regarding the Biblical end times.

Ask and ye shall receive I suppose.. all I know is I'd take the World War II shows in a second over the stupid fucking UFOs and Da Vinci Code shows.

It's The History Channel, not Fake Shit Channel.

I'm actually hoping this is good - for a "value" game. The setting might be an interesting change of pace for an FPS. But yeah, the History Channel tie-in doesn't inspire confidence.

Stay away from anything with the 'history channel' label on it. I've discovered that the hard way.

The only game that's been released with that label worth anything (and, in fact, was a fantastic game) was Take Command: 1st Bull Run - and it caused so much harm to their sales because of the bad reputation they dumped the publisher for the sequel.

What? No Adolf Hitler?! We can't be ruling out the possibility of easter eggs, now.

Nah, the History Channel stopped being the "World War II Channel" some time ago. Now they play more shows about UFOs and paranormal stuff than WW2. Sometimes it seems they play more of that than actual history topics.
