First Impressions --
It's very very fun so far. I'm only about (guessing) half-way through the first act, but aside from a couple of minor teething issues with the controls (the cover system occasionally has me leaping valiantly into walls, rather than taking cover on them because I haven't quite become accustomed to how close you need to be yet), I'm having a total blast with this.
I haven't played enough yet to know whether or not the combat is going to get stale, so I'm going to reserve judgement on that at this point. But so far the enemy AI has been really fun to fight against, and the situations I've found myself in have definitely been nice and intense -- as I say, I'm really having a lot of fun so far. If they can keep this up for the duration, then this is one amazingly fine game and really deserves some very high scores.
The controls are very very tight and intuitive, and although I'm definitely not a fan of gamepads for shooters, I don't see any real flaws with the way they're implemented here either. As I mentioned, the cover system does take a bit of getting used to; it's context-sensitive, so if you're not in the context you think you are, it can sometimes do some odd things, but that's more a question of getting a feel for the way the game works than a flaw.. otherwise everything is really well laid out, and aiming feels clean and precise.
Squad AI seems to be decent for the most part, although I did have the odd occasion where one of my dudes ran into my line of fire.. Happily, my guy immediately yelled "get outta my way!!", which made me chuckle.. still be happier if it just didn't happen though, but at least you get something
for the bother
The graphics are absolutely astoundingly good. Just totally crazy in places.
There haven't been any
pauses for loading other than at the very beginning, and the only slowdown I've seen so far has been during a cutscene, which is pretty amazing given how insane the game looks during firefights and such.
The voice acting is nearly just as astounding as the graphics, only on the bad side. I'm hoping it either grows on me, or the gameplay keeps this level of intensity throughout the entire campaign so I just don't give a rat's ass. I find it pretty shockingly bad for such a high-profile game though..
I've already turned off the music.. just thought it was trying a bit too hard to be 'epic' (yes yes) for my taste, but I'm not really a fan of in-game music anyway, so that could be just me.. Sound effects have been great so far though, so no real complaints on the sound other than the phoned-in acting.
Gotta get back to it -- just stopped to shovel some kibbles into my face and jot down my first thoughts..
It may be that one day a young man will adore a Pinata. This comment was edited on Nov 7, 20:49.
I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now, even though you broke my heart and killed me.
