Yeah...and I really liked how the char's and baddies in the game don't look like Matel plastic toys.

Which is why I thought it was a Quake engine game.... heh.

Too bad this wasn't on a PC. I'd like to see what a top of the line video card can do.

Yeah, I wonder what the first game using the U3 engine on the PC will be. Possibly UT2007? It definitely looks great.

As for GoW, it appears to be living up to the hype. The reviews from game sites and players have all been really good. I hope its not short.

What engine was used to make GoW?

Unreal Engine 3.

Keep in mind this is the first real game that demonstrates what the U3 engine can do. So far it sounds like there was a good reason why everyone and their mother licensed the U3 engine. Too bad this wasn't on a PC. I'd like to see what a top of the line video card can do.

I'm a fan.

Easily lived up to my expectations, which were pretty high to be honest. The graphics are great. The gameplay is hard without being frustrating. And the atmosphere is great.

Yeah, so far, so good.

First Impressions --

Holy FUCK.

It's very very fun so far. I'm only about (guessing) half-way through the first act, but aside from a couple of minor teething issues with the controls (the cover system occasionally has me leaping valiantly into walls, rather than taking cover on them because I haven't quite become accustomed to how close you need to be yet), I'm having a total blast with this.

I haven't played enough yet to know whether or not the combat is going to get stale, so I'm going to reserve judgement on that at this point. But so far the enemy AI has been really fun to fight against, and the situations I've found myself in have definitely been nice and intense -- as I say, I'm really having a lot of fun so far. If they can keep this up for the duration, then this is one amazingly fine game and really deserves some very high scores.

The controls are very very tight and intuitive, and although I'm definitely not a fan of gamepads for shooters, I don't see any real flaws with the way they're implemented here either. As I mentioned, the cover system does take a bit of getting used to; it's context-sensitive, so if you're not in the context you think you are, it can sometimes do some odd things, but that's more a question of getting a feel for the way the game works than a flaw.. otherwise everything is really well laid out, and aiming feels clean and precise.

Squad AI seems to be decent for the most part, although I did have the odd occasion where one of my dudes ran into my line of fire.. Happily, my guy immediately yelled "get outta my way!!", which made me chuckle.. still be happier if it just didn't happen though, but at least you get something for the bother

The graphics are absolutely astoundingly good. Just totally crazy in places.

There haven't been any pauses for loading other than at the very beginning, and the only slowdown I've seen so far has been during a cutscene, which is pretty amazing given how insane the game looks during firefights and such.

The voice acting is nearly just as astounding as the graphics, only on the bad side. I'm hoping it either grows on me, or the gameplay keeps this level of intensity throughout the entire campaign so I just don't give a rat's ass. I find it pretty shockingly bad for such a high-profile game though..

I've already turned off the music.. just thought it was trying a bit too hard to be 'epic' (yes yes) for my taste, but I'm not really a fan of in-game music anyway, so that could be just me.. Sound effects have been great so far though, so no real complaints on the sound other than the phoned-in acting.

Gotta get back to it -- just stopped to shovel some kibbles into my face and jot down my first thoughts..

This is the first title that TRULY separates the 360 from the last-gen systems. Oblivion definitely did, but this feels so much more ... powerful

right right - I have to remember that these are only consoles - so yeah, hype is good....cause once you get the game, that is all you get.

If this game was on PC, it would greatly benefit from the modding community....and mouse movement/look is where it's at. Gamepad for the loss.

they are giving "killer app status" based on hype!?

No, they are giving it "killer app status" based on the pre-sales. Which, according to MS, are second only to Halo 2. They translate the pre-sale numbers into "hype and expectation".

@galewind:

I played the campaign coop for about an hour and I had a blast. I'm sure single player is fun too, but for me, coop is where it's at.

Graphics kick ass, the cover feature is nice, boss fights are cool and they have some fun gameplay elements. In coop mode you can often take cover and distract opponents while your partner tries to flank them. The area where you need to stay in the light to survive was pretty neat. You have to blow things up (like propane tanks) to light your way as you advance in the level. And there's a part where 1 player needs to aim a spotlight while the other is on the ground, crossing a courtyard while having to stay within area illuminated by the spotlight. It's not just: find the blue key to open the blue door.

Honestly, A lot of people think that hype means the game is bad. It's actually QUITE good. I'd give it at least a 9/10 from what I played so far, and that's just the campaign. The graphics are fantastic -- the gameplay is tough to get used to at first (including hiding behind things). I have died a LOT so far (I suck), but the checkpoint system isn't that bad.

I've just started act 2, and I can say act 1 was very intense.

This is the first title that TRULY separates the 360 from the last-gen systems. Oblivion definitely did, but this feels so much more ... powerful

heh, from the killer app article;
According to Microsoft, the incoming third-person action spectacular Gears of War has sold enough pre-release copies and gathered enough advance support from retailers to be ranked second only to Halo 2 in terms of hype and expectation. Surely that’s killer app status.
Wait just a minute - they are giving "killer app status" based on hype!? Wow, such great journalism! Well since MSFT said it - it must be true!!!!

And this game is rated M, so how could it be such a huge seller? M is known as the game killer. *sigh* I guess we wait for parents to cry foul AFTER they hear something on the 6 O'clock news about the game and how bad it is after the neighbor kid uses a chasinsaw and cuts a kitten in 2, only to realize THEY TOO bought the game for THEIR child - and come to find out now that THEIR child was the one that gave the neighbor kid the idea!!!!

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH.
Idiots.

LOL!! No doubt. It definitely won't live up to many people's insanely high expectations.
yeah, the fun factor will wear off, as the gameplay doesn't look all that great. It is a mix of HL2 and FEAR. I guess they are hyping the gimmicks.

gamerankings.com is going wild with it. 1UP gave it a 10/10 which at first I thought it was the opposite of the guy who gave NWN2 a 5/10. But the GoW reviewer this time at least explained the game well enough for me to gain an understanding of the gameplay.
The hype machine is working!!!!
Those guys at 1up are idiots.

No game is a 10/10 - period.

Looks like Doom3 or Quake3 engine. (huh, Unreal engine - saw in Robo article - this true?)
Not sure I like the shaky screen. (watched about an hour of gameplay on youtube)
