New ATI Drivers

Advanced Micro Devices, the artist formerly known as ATI, offers new version 6.10 reference drivers for ATI RADEON accelerators (thanks Ant and Voodoo Extreme).

What's so great about improving performance in a bunch of synthetic benchmarks?

Nothing in and of itself. But they generally use the benchmark increases to showcase game improvements. It's easier to say "6.7-15.8% increase in 3DMark2006" compared to "6.7-15.8% increase in FEAR, UT2004, Doom, Quake 4, Oblivion, Gothic 3, ..., DNF". Ok, maybe not DNF. But you get the idea.

Why even mentioning that? What's so great about improving performance in a bunch of synthetic benchmarks?

Many people only care about these synthetic benchmarks. Pretty sad, yes, but true nonetheless.

Still no update for Windows 2000 drivers, though the ones for XP seem to work OK with W2K.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't believe Microsoft allow WHQL certification for Windows 2000 any more, so if you want WHQL-compliant drivers, they're inherently not "supported" on Win2k.

I'm still using 6.3 with my current W2K system. Seems the 6.2 driver was the last official W2K driver. Got to say though:

As with most Catalyst® releases, performance has increased in various situations. In this release of Catalyst® Intel 965 Crossfire performance increases due to improvements of the Crossfire D3D driver in handling large vertex meshes. Gains of 6.7-15.8% can be seen in 3DMark2006, 9.7-10.5% in 3DMark2005 and 3DMark2003 performance improves as much as 7.1%.

Why even mentioning that? What's so great about improving performance in a bunch of synthetic benchmarks?
