BF2142 Conflict

EA Suggests Removing Windows Security Update news on 1UP describes a conflict between the new BF2142 patch and a Windows XP security update, being careful to emphasize that the conflict lies in XP, rather than the game. The issue is summed up in the following quote in the patch notes: "Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update."

I am boycotting all EA products from now on. After this incident I've been reading up on all the shit that EA has done in the past; buying out other studios and liquidating them, signing exlusive deals with sports preventing competition, cutting support for games a year or more older, and forcing players to purchase further installments.. its just not on. EA screwed us all over with BF2, and now they wanna spy on our computers!
Ive had enough, I've written a letter to EA complaining (pathetic I know) but if many people complain they might stop and listen to us gamers they have been manipulating. Let your voice be heard.

This is the FIRST BF title i haven't bought on release and now am more glad than ever i didn't.

Plus there is no Semi like there is in European Forces. i would drop ammo power ups on the Semi Truck and haul it to the other side of the map and pretend that my score was being based on my timeliness and successful transport.

I don't doubt your development experience. I remain unconvinced that it was an EA coding practice that led to this until we know WHY it fails.

In this corner: KB917422... fixes a vulnerability present in the Microsoft Windows Kernel that may allow for arbitrary code execution. Exploitation could be successful if the victim visits a malicious website.

In this corner: BF2142 patch... tries to use this exploit to dial home.

EA, "hey please remove that Window's update so that we can continute to spy on you!"

Are you really this stupid in real life? If the game is running on your PC, THEIR CODE IS ALREADY BEING EXECUTED! ZOMG! You really should put more than five seconds of thought, and perhaps even reading what other people have said before you flap your worthless drivel.

I have proof via my own experince as a developer on the MS technology stack and seeing other developers doing the same mistakes.

Why should a game need to "EXPLOIT" a kernel defect? Makes one think.

A logical fallacy. Correlation does not imply causation. It has been stated before that this update changed how INIs can be read or written. Until any other confirmation comes out as to what EXACTLY causes this (it could also be a >2,048 byte application stack) to say that the game is expoiting a kernel defect is invalid logic.

If developers do not follow MSDN guidance then they have themselves to blame, cry me a river developers.

Again, you have no proof that this was the case. You are just throwing out conjecture with absolutely no evidence to back it up.

I disagree, if they are misusing a feature / API or using it in an undocumented way then they are asking for trouble when it comes to patches and new SKU's.

ONCE AGAIN, you do not know if this was the cause of the problem. You haven't said one fact in both of your posts, everything is prefixed with an "if" and "probably" and "maybe" and other such words.

I read through both of your posts SEVERAL times, and you manage to bring absolutely no facts to the table, just conjecture. Other people have stated several DIRECT causes, and have provided evidence that it may or may not be EA's fault.

I am not asking anyone to forgive EA. I am simply asking that people do not judge until they know THE FINAL CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. Making definitive assumptions about something makes this no better than 5 chatty housewives squawking in a circle about who did who.

To: EA Games

Starting with the release of Battlefield 2142, an online PC game, EA Games has begun incorporating the IGA software with their games. This is stated in a disclaimer accompanying Battlefield 2142:
“The Software may incorporate technology developed by IGA Worldwide Inc. ("IGA") (the "Advertising Technology"). The purpose of the Advertising Technology is to deliver in-game advertisements to you when you use the Software while connected to the Internet. When you use the Software while connected to the Internet, the Advertising Technology may record your Internet Protocol address and other anonymous information ("Advertising Data").”

Not only is it offensive enough that EA Games has decided to force adware into products that consumers pay a large price for (often $50 or more), they have further made things worse by giving this software the ability to spy on our computers. Although the information is submitted anonymously, it is still monitoring what we are using our computers for. The disclaimer is also extremely vague; giving no specification of any boundary EA has set.

Adware and spyware have often been proved to slow down computers. It is another unneeded piece of software constantly running in the background and consuming memory, CPU cycles, and internet bandwidth. If every company were to take from EA’s examples, our computers would be bloated to the point of barely being usable.

EA has not given us an option to opt out of this, and their only compromise so far is for us to not use the game on an internet connected computer. Seeing how consumers have paid for an internet enabled game and one that is primarily meant to be played on the internet, this is an extremely poor compromise.

As a result of these actions by EA, I am calling for a boycott of all EA Games which feature this software, namely Battlefield 2142. It is unacceptable to force spyware onto a user’s computer in order to use a product. A disclaimer included in the box does not make this okay. Especially after Sony’s Rootkit software, it is unacceptable for companies to be doing this.

Sincerely,

http://www.petitiononline.com/bf2142ad/

Interesting, are you FULLY patched or just a partial patched system? I have every hotfix they sent out and get the crashes.

I imagine most people that get it are fully patched. There must be some difference.

If anybody who crashes and has Visual Studio attached or a debugger installed, please email a minidump and callstack (but without symbols its just a bunch of addresses so the minidump is much more to them as they can load up the symbols), select without the heap as it will be a smaller file, to the publisher/developer. The more they get the more they will listen perhaps.

At the very least, send them an email.

KB917422 also causes conflicts with FEAR, FEAR Combat, and Just Cause.

I just played FEAR combat recently and it worked fine. Should this update affect everyone or just a few ppl?

It sounds like this fix affects a game in general vs a few ppl trying ot run that game... but my system has been working fine...

Once I start seeing other games crash because of this bug I'll consider uninstalling it, but until then I'll stick with the security patches.

I disagree, if they are misusing a feature / API or using it in an undocumented way then they are asking for trouble when it comes to patches and new SKU's. I have made this mistake / assumption when going from NT to 2000 they made a change and I took a dependancy / assumption on a specific way of using the API and a CONSTANT parameter. I later went back and read the actual document and lo and behold, it said it right there in plain text "DO NOT DEPEND UPON THIS PARAMETER VALUE IN FUTURE CHANGES". It pays to read the MSDN docs.

MS is not at fault, the developers are because they are using the system's features in a nasty way for their DRM or performance enhancements.

Now they got busted and are pointing fingers. Well they should point it at themselves.

It would be the same wheter it is Apple or QNX etc the same rule applies. If you are a developer and you have disregard for the documentation from the maker of the tools you use then you are in the wrong business. We all know DRM is nasty because there was no frameworks in place officially for it so they abused what was there.

BUSTED.

These were only the games I discovered didn't work when having KB917422 installed. After uninstalling it, they worked fine. There are probably more games that conflicts with it too.

This is Microsoft's fault!
