Ships Ahoy - Battlefield 2142

EA Assaults Retail Shelves With Battlefield 2142 is the press release announcing the availability of the latest installment in the Battlefield series of multiplayer military shooters:
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Prepare for titanic all-out war in the year 2142! Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS - News) today announced that Battlefield 2142(TM) has shipped to retailers in North America and Europe for the PC under the EA(TM) brand. The game is rated "T for Teen" and carries a MSRP of $49.99. Battlefield 2142 was developed by Sweden-based developer Digital Illusions.

Battlefield 2142 drops players into a future ravaged by a new ice age. Players are called to fight for the European Union or the Pan Asian Coalition in an epic battle for survival. Armed with an arsenal of high-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will wage war using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive Battle Walkers patrol the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and a selection of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.

Battlefield 2142 supports online multiplayer for up to 64 players in the classic Conquest mode and up to 48 players in the new Titan mode, which challenges gamers to use teamwork to destroy their opponent's Titan, a massive flying battleship, while defending their own. The game also features a deep new persistence system, with more than 40 ranks, from Recruit to Supreme Commander. Players can also customize their soldier with more than 40 unlockable weapons and gadgets for upwards of 1,000 possible combinations to match any play-style.

"Battlefield 2142 is a bold leap into the future for the franchise and represents nearly 18 months of development by the team at DICE," said Marcus Nilsson, senior producer at Digital Illusions. "Battlefield 2142 reinvents the classic Battlefield sandbox with all-new toys, deep persistence, and the massive new Titan mode - the first all-new mode since we introduced Conquest mode in Battlefield 1942."

Well, SHIPS AHOY, but not for me.
I'm an adult player with money to spend and I've been a BF fan since day 1: played the BF1942 demo to shreds; bought the game; bought the two expansions; bought BFVN; LOVED the BFVN WWII-mod; bought BF2; bought BF2-SF...
...but then they started selling those internet-only packages with mediocre maps that hardly have any server online... Hmmm, I passed on that one. What happened to free content? Luckily we got The Road to Jalalabad (which was/is great).
Now I tried the BF2142 demo when it was released and I gave it four or five hours of gameplay, but I was not impressed. It's just no fun. I think the pace is less than the battles in BF2. It's not just this I don't like: it's the whole concept and feel of the new BF2142 that I don't like. There just is no spark. I can even call it boring at times.
I don't like the Titan-mode and the (inside of the) Titan. I don't like the fantasy vehicles and guns. They look cool, but the feel of it all is not as exciting as the vehicles in the three other BF-games. A plasma gun or a bigger plasma gun? Who cares when they both don't give you that AH, YEAH! feeling? And although I'm not a flyboy, I miss the planes/jets. The only cool thing to look at and try is the mechs, but that's not enough for me to get a whole game going.
But what matters in the end: fun is what I miss in this thing. Ofcourse I only played the demo and its map, but I'm not spending my 50 euro to find out if the game gets better in the other maps. There's just too many things in the demo that I don't like. I don't believe that the full game will be that much better.
Luckily theres good news too: my BF2 runs great and every game I play has the excitement and fun I miss in the BF2142 demo. So I just stick to BF2.
BTW: long time ago in a forum far far away I suggested they should have made BF14-18 with WW-1 troops, horses, vehicles, biplanes, zeppelins, trenches and gas-attacks. If there's any future left after BF2142 DICE should have another look at this 14-18 period.
Maybe they should stick to what they're best at, put the love of game-creation back into their product and grab back some market share I'm pretty sure they lose with BF2142. They did already with my share

It's far more likely that the data will be derived from each player's habits in the game and possibly coupled with any demographic information provided in registration and/or purchase rather than using the web browser history. Since each player has a unique ID, it will be easy to store and track this information. For example, a player who repeatedly views certain ads or types of ads in the game for a significant duration will be shown more of those ads in the future, e.g. if tbe player spends significant time viewing beer ads he will see more beer ads. Demographic information from registration such as age and address could provide even more targeted ads.

What? Finding idiosyncracies and patterns in a user's habit? Say it ain't so! Don't present the idea like you've just come across it. Customer behavior has been a long studied subject for businesses for decades.

The rumours about a Garage Games making a true successor to Tribes revolves around Legions, but honestly Legions will just be a little tech demo to showcase their new game engine. I wish it was more, but thats pretty much what has been stated. Plus Legions would not be Tribes since Garage Games does not own the rights to the Tribes franchise. It Sucks, especially when all of a sudden the whole teamwarfare, bigger maps, vehicle thing is suddenly becoming popular with evrything from BF2, Halo and now even Quake. I get tired of reading previews of these games with words like innovative and new.

I await Quake Wars and by God bring back the greatness that was Tribes. Just keep Vivendi software as far away from it that you can.

Rumours have been rumbling about the GarageGames folks. If anyone can give Tribes the justice it deserves, it's GG.

Again, get frickin' serious. Are you running a PC connected to the internet with any modern software installed on it? Do you have a Creative Labs soundcard? Do you have...etc., etc., etc.?
THEN YOU'VE GOT SPYWARE.

If you don't want anyone to spy on your PC, disconnect it from the internet PERMANENTLY. In any case, spare us this trivial, half-assed paranoid crap.
-L

Which proves nothing, except that you know absolutely nothing (as in zero, nada, zip, zilch, etc.) about spyware, and not much more about computers in general. I'm connected to the internet, play games online, and I can assure you with 100% certainty that no spyware is running on my computer. Just because you haven't the slightest clue how to see what's running on your computer doesn't mean no one else does.

The sad thing is, even without the spyware and yes, even without the bugs, BF2 and BF2142 both still suck.

It's root kits all over again. I think this is going to create a big thud and lots of back peddling for EA. I'm not buying the game. If I pay $50 for a game, I don't want any obvious advertising. A little product placement, when it fits into the story, maybe but not this BS. It's not like it's freeware for gosh sakes!

They need to get this data from somewhere. They're not just making it up as they go along. The way to get this data is by tracking your browsing history. Afaik, there's really no other way to get it.

Once EA gets succesful with this sort of crap, all other publishers will soon follow,
EA is following the pack here not leading it. Ubisoft and Vivendi amongst others have already put Massive's ad system in their games, and it is essentially the same thing.

You can hate BF2142 all you want, and hate in game ads, but it's not viewing your browser history.

It's not? Then how exactly does it "The Advertising Data is temporarily used by IGA to enable the presentation and measurement of in-game advertisements and other in-game objects which are uploaded temporarily to your personal gameplay?"

To me, that measurement part seems to indicate, "We're streaming ads to you that are of some personal interest to you."
So while you see a Dodge Neon ad, I'd get a Smirnoff Vodka ad.
They need to get this data from somewhere. They're not just making it up as they go along. The way to get this data is by tracking your browsing history. Afaik, there's really no other way to get it.

(edit : I saw that pic you posted a little after I posted this, and read the answers by that guy from Dice. In my opinion, they're being brutally vague. "It's not installing any EXTRA spyware."
Extra? You mean, above and beyond the spyware you ARE installing?)

But that's really besides the point. EA is charging you 50 bucks for this game, then feels the need to UPLOAD extra ads to you, to make more money? What the fuck? And how does this friendly little ad uploading affect your performance/fps?

And ofcourse, EVERYONE will buy it, like good little EA Monkeys.

Seriously people, you need to NOT buy this shit. Once EA gets succesful with this sort of crap, all other publishers will soon follow, and EVERY fucking game will be infested with IGA ads. Have fun seeing that Walmart ad in the next Total War game.

I've never bought a BF game and don't intend to. I did play BF1942 on a friend's PC a couple of times but hated it. Operation Flashpoint is still more fun to me.

Anyway, can't you guys just find out the DNS to whatever server is collecting this info and just edit your host file to redirect it to 127.0.0.1, i.e. local host? It's a quick, simple fix.

If they're running this test ad thing, should everyone playing it be getting paid for essentially working for EA? If they get away with this, I shudder to think what's in store in the future.

"Hah, these idiots playing don't even care! For BF 2142 Vietnam II, let's track everything on their hard drive!"

I am arguing that, in this case, the slip included in the box doesn't says that it will scan your browsing history and send it back to IGA.

No, but it uses such vague language that it could be reasonably interpreted to mean just about anything. So the slip alone simply causes suspicion, and rightly so. You don't usually use such vague descriptions unless it's to keep something intentionally vague.

Information doesn't want to be free, it wants to be tied up and spanked. It told me so itself, in a naughty little whisper.

When is Battlefield 42BC coming out?

You mean a FP Rome game? Shit that'd be great.

You know, I first posted that as a joke, but the more I thought about it (ancient Rome First Person Shooter with arrows, swords, shields, sieges..) the more I liked the idea. I'd actually consider getting that one, unlike 2142.
