Trade Wars Remake?

This Trade Wars Survey offers a one question investigation seeking word from those who have either played or hosted Trade Wars. This is to lay the groundwork for a possible update to the game in honor of its 20th anniversary: Word is:
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the original release of Trade Wars (December, 1986), I am pleased to announce that I have reached an agreement with Sylien Entertainment to develop a long-overdue graphical remake of this classic game. But before we can proceed, we need your help. Because Trade Wars is 20 years old, I have lost touch with all but a small percentage of its fanbase. Unless we can reach out to this fanbase and prove that interest in Trade Wars still exists, we will be unable to secure the funding necessary to complete this project.

To accomplish this, we are running a small survey to estimate the number of people who have played or hosted Trade Wars over the years. By answering this one-question survey, you will enable us to demonstrate the great potential of a new Trade Wars project. Nothing else will be required of you, but if you choose, you may request to receive a monthly Trade Wars newsletter with updates on our progress. And if you really want to help out, you can complete an optional, more extensive survey. We would love to learn more about your experience with Trade Wars.

oh, and they will be undercut by all of the free web-based emulations of all of the old BBS style games out there.

Just google Web L.O.R.D. or web trade wars.

They are all out there to play for free.

Well, other than the Name of the title, it has already been done. I am not sure other than nerds like myself that loved the original and logging into BBS' (go to wiki young ones) it will catch on. It would have to be a pretty big title with nothing all that original and very graphical.

Remember, they are no longer making games for true fans, it has to be a GTA, EA, or Steam title to invest in it.

As one of the people who never played TW back in its day, a friend talked me into participating in a game that he had set up for the workplace. I was bored to tears, but managed to stick with it for a couple weeks to try and give it a fair chance. Unfortunately it never got much better so I eventually just stopped playing.

So many people talk about all the classic of the old days, but today expectations are higher and the same stuff won't impress gamers like they did back then. Even a remake of TW with graphics wouldn't be much fun to me, I would expect them to add significantly more features and gameplay elements, almost to the point that it turns into a Master of Orion type game, but more focused on your fleet of ships.

My 2c.

For its time, TW really pushed the envelope when it came to multiplayer network gaming. You can say "it was just a door game" but c'mon, it was pretty innovative.

Yeah, back in its day. Now, I really think you'd probably get bored playing a remake of the game. Influences are one thing, such as taking what made Trade Wars great and comibining them with games that could use it, but just a strict remake? Nah...I've played the game already. I can go back and play it again anyway without a redo.

If you were him, wouldn't you be thinking that you might be able to make it a much better game with the tech available today? And what about all the gamers now who never had the opportunity to play the game and never will, unless there's a remake?

If he's going to remake it, I hope he beefs it up a bit at least. It was great as a door game, and I played it for a few years, but people expect a lot more from games these days. It better be able to compete with other games feature-wise as well. Nostalgia alone won't cut it.

Information doesn't want to be free, it wants to be tied up and spanked. It told me so itself, in a naughty little whisper.

Yeah, gmaes like TW and LORD were great door games for their day, but there's no reason to try and make a new game out of them.

I disagree. As bad as many sequels and remakes are, without iteration, where would be today? Everything would be first generation, original but unrefined. And if someone did something with old tech, it would be off limits when new tech comes around. That's really restrictive if you think about it.

For its time, TW really pushed the envelope when it came to multiplayer network gaming. You can say "it was just a door game" but c'mon, it was pretty innovative. That guy did the best he could with the tech available at that time. If you were him, wouldn't you be thinking that you might be able to make it a much better game with the tech available today? Sorry, but I think it's a huge mistake to use a bunch of crappy sequels and remakes as justification for not attempting to remake old games.

I don't remember having to pay for Trade Wars. The sysops usually paid for it, or ran a cracked copy.

Pardus is a web-based, turn-based, space trading/combat game that is completely free to play. Sure it't not trade wars, but that's still hard to beat...

People still love the old classics, they just don't like to pay for them anymore.

Meh, Trade Wars was good in its day but I think it'll need more than a graphical update to breathe new life into that genre, especially given the success of EVE Online.
