More on the BF2142 Demo

EA sends along another update on the BF2142 demo, further complicating what is normally a more straightforward process. Following on word earlier today that the game would have periods of exclusivity to both EA Downloader and GameSpot comes the additional wrinkle that the game will appear on IGN on Friday evening, though the new schedule does not specify whether or not Friday evening marks the point at which other mirrors could carry the file. Here's the new release schedule:
Thursday, October 5th 12AM PST - EA Downloader
Friday, October 6th 9AM PST - GameSpot.com
Friday, October 6th 6PM PST - IGN.com

Got the demo downloaded and have played it a few times and I'm really not liking the tempo of the game. Soldiers seem to walk slower and less class choices right off the bat. (recon, assault, support, engineer)

There are several things that make this game feel like it's trying to be a console game and pc game at the same time.

The lights instead of latency numbers for one. When you choose servers the latency is represented by a light instead of a number. (green/yellow/red)

When you drive tanks the primary position only fires the cannon, no secondary weapon. (secondary fire is a zoom function) When you take the number 2 spot you control a turret machine gun. This is how it was done on BF2 MC for the 360.

In fact it seems like all the weapons are single purpose, or the majority of them anyway, which is consistent to what the 360 version of teh BF2 game does.

There are some things I see that I really like. The support weapon for one when you are prone takes a few seconds to get accurate but once it is it stays accurate. You can hold the trigger down and it doesn't lose accuracy unles you move. Very cool. I haven't tried the other weapons but if they all do this I really like the feature.

try assigning something other than x to countermeasures for aircraft... if its still setup after a restart then you are a luckier person than I...

The disconnects were so bad for me the longest I was able to play was ten minutes, again it may be that gypsy that cursed me when I was younger...

I haven't had any problems binding/assigning keys and having them stay to what I set them -- however, I am having the "disconnect" issues. However, I think the EA master server is overloaded and that is the source of the disconnects...I'm pretty sure that between hours and days from now that won't be as much of an issue or an issue at all. I only played the beta for about 15 minutes, but so far I'm finding the demo pretty entertaining (have played it for probably 1.5-2.0 hours now).

Edit: It might just be because the demo isn't as bloated as the full game, but I'm finding map loads ridiculesly faster than in BF2

Trying to download the demo now... but assigned control resetting catches my eye. I hate that bug, why can't they figure out something as simple as mapping controls!?

I like using the shift key to crouch but if I want to change it I have to edit the text file myself...

Meh, the demo's free, will enjoy what is there and then move on I guess.

It gets better my friend! After playing for a bit here are some of the choice items I have endured... mid-game disconnects... sound cutting out... assigned controls reseting themselves...

They're making it so easy! I'm freeeeeeeee!

Ok played some more and I'm begging you people out there thinking about picking this game up, please don't. EA has taken something I truly loved and systematically destroyed it. Please don't buy this game hoping they will fix the problems within a couple of patches, they won't, they have no intention of doing so, their next title is already announced and in production. This is not the ranting of a bitter person its a plea for a movement to get the respect as costumers we deserve. I joined the beta, I downloaded the demo, I wanted enjoy this game like a did bf1942. EA has to be made to understand people expect more than a release they expect value. I know this is probably going to achieve very little, given the comment by the DICE/EA repersentative about the bugs in BF2, but as the vocal "minority" I just had to say something. There are companies that actually care about their product as well as the people using it, valve for example, hold out a little longer for tf2, its cheapers and I sure will leave the gate a hell of a lot more polished.

To put the nail in the coffin there no single player in the demo

LOL.. well then it will get not a single play from me!

But even if they had put bots in, my resolve is strong on this one; I really don't care to even try it.. but I think the >$200 I've already spent on the franchise has earned me the right to some shameless trolling venting trolling in these threads though

My favorite tribes experiences were playing Renegades Tribes 2, yes. The vehicles were pretty pointless in Tribes though; I usually stuck to a scouting/sniper role or engineer.

They sure don't make CTF like they used to, that's for sure. That shit was *intense*.

I always wanted Tribes to be more like Starsiege, what with all sorts of tanks and mechs and whatnot.

I'm guessing you liked Tribes 2 more than the original? Personally, I've always felt that vehicles had no place in Tribes and was thus sorely disappointed when vehicles played such a prominent role in the sequel.

Overall Titan Mode is a pale compairison to Tribes gameplay.

That being said there are some things that could be taken from Tribes and applied to BF2142 that would make it alot better.
But Tribes 2 also had some very very very nasty bugs at launch.
I'd go play Tribes in a heartbeat but I just can't keep up with the twitch gaming of Tribes/UT2k4/Quake4 MP. FEAR's MP is my speed limit anymore. God I feel old

Its even funnier people think that since BF is actaully Tribes set in 1942... With BF2142 the circle is now complete with the addition of titan mode... Tribes is born again in a buggier (one has to assume at this point) less feature rich form (no built in clan suppot or messaging, don't get me start on the server browser...) Just ask Meatfarts... Everythings got its roots...

Oh and BF, when your team is great, is still a thing of beauty, even with poor support, proving that its the players that make the game I guess...

The whole "this is better than that" arguements are entirely pointless. It really got ridiculous with Q3 and UT. Why do people feel the need to dis other games when talking about how great the one they're playing is? It just reeks of insecurity, which incidentally is also the source of the homophobia and really agressive smack on most servers these days, regardless of game.

I love the claims of ET:QW being a ripoff of BF. There's one critical difference between the two:

ET:QW actually has objectives. BF is running around a seires of 6-9 flags at any random time looking for action.

SD are 3 for 3 so far (Q3 Fortress, some RtCW maps, and ET) they, unlike DICE/EA have earned my trust.

Wolfenstein ET, by many accounts, most reviews and my own playing was a shitload of fun. Oddly enough, it was also free of charge and even more oddly, really, from all that I've ever read had much better support than anything EA/DICE.

Think what you like about ID gameplay, everyone has their opinions and you're welcome to yours. One of the things I do like about ID is that their apparent idiot game designers are somewhat competent programmers and when a bug rears it's ugly head, they tend to fix it. EA has stated they have no intention of fixing some bugs in some games because the next version is more important to them. I find that simply unconscionable.

EA have told you they don't give a shit about you or your gaming experience. And their business is publishing games....

EDIT: Forever meaning to type 'Their' and doing 'They're' instead.

Well Enemy Territory is done by Splash Damage, the first one was released free, and the Quake Wars version is also done by Splash Damage with again help from id software.

It's pretty much a given id software can't make games. Game Engines yes, fun games? No.
I just hope Raven make another JK game with the Doom3 engine once they get done with Marvel.
