Bitmap Remakes

Frogster Interactive announces they have signed a deal with The Bitmap Brothers to bring remakes of their classics Speedball 2 and The Chaos Engine to PCs next year:
Berlin, 26.09.06: Frogster Interactive brings out the big classics: The Berlin-based publisher has secured the worldwide PC-rights for über-games Speedball 2 and The Chaos Engine from legendary British game makers The Bitmap Brothers. The cult image of both games comes from the beginning of the computer games era. Since then, a huge fan base has continually asked for re-releases. In vain – until now! Frogster will release both titles in 2007 for PC; The Bitmap Brothers will participate in the development process.

The futuristic sports game series Speedball was first released in 1988 on the Amiga and was an instant triumph. Versions for almost every relevant system and highly successful sequels followed. The series got many awards, amongst others 1989 “Game of the Year“ from The Golden Joysticks and “Best Original Game“ from In-Din Arcade.

Action-shooter The Chaos Engine celebrated a similarly successful première in 1993. The Chaos Engine received numerous awards including the SEGA Award 1994 for “Best Action Game“ and the Power Play Award for “Multi-player Game of the Year“.

I'm waiting for a new release of that game for years!!!!
- hope that we'll have some better graphics / sounds
- more 'special characters' (the chars you can buy)
- the gameplay is really good as is bu if they only can add a possibility to change selected players at any time it will just be perfect (the only missing feature imho).
- and at least i really hope a port to linux as i defenitelly won't use windows anymore

There's no such thing as great game mechanics getting too old.

Magic Pockets!!! Man, my sisters and I played that game to death. We would even do a stupid dance when the music started, booming out the tinny monitor speaker. Betty "mime" Boo, if I remember (and I do.)

Well, why stop at them two? Do the lot.

yes, Gods and Xenon 1/2.

I'm hoping they will remake Xenon in 3D, this is a much better title for a 3d conversion

I'd put my vote in for Xenon 2 -- still my favourite shooter of all time. I don't even think they'd need to spruce it up much

Speedball was fun though

Don't change the gameplay AT ALL!

They're going to have to change something about it, game mechanics that old won't work today.

Exactly, that's what I'm hoping for, new eye candy but exactly the same gameplay, and configurable controls. that would be so cool watching my little men smash the living shit out of the other peopole in beauuuutifull 3D with blood particles spattering the field.. lovely indeed!

And yeah, the insane speeds is a MUST!

The problem with remakes is that they're never as good as the originals to the people who played them.

I'd prefer to see Speedball 2 released as an exact copy just with updated eye candy and audio and maybe a few cut scenes (if they really wanted to add something new).

And most of all it must have the same insane speeds you could play at in the highest league with your players maxxed out.

Don't change the gameplay AT ALL!

I still use my original Choas Engine code as a password. Don't ask why I still remember it... something to do with a certain part of the game being quite hard

I'll believe these remakes when I see them.

Speedball 2 was a great great game - one of the best for the amiga. Doing it first person sounds kinda bad though. Imagine playing a hockey or soccer game in first person: cool for about 30 seconds.

Pathetic? This is great news, if the bitmap brothers actually is joining in on the development.. I sure as hell wouldn't mind a speedball 2 with some more usable controls and a nice coat of good graphics and a physics engine.

And well.. chaos engine kicked ass, so same as above

Bitmap Brothers was working on Speedball Arena a few years back, but I guess it was cancelled.

Yay the Chaos engine, I don't give a fuck what Sega thought of it, this was best on the Amiga 500.

Hope they remix but keep the same style of music.

I think there was a First Person version on the PSX and it blew.

This sounds awsome, Speedballs a game that doesn't need a lot gameplay changes, a nice 3D coat of paint it would kick.

Whatever happened to that 3D first person view version of Speedball they were working on years ago?

When I feel the urge to play old Amiga games I just load up an emulator.
