DEFCON Gold

The Darwinia Website (thanks Frans) has word that DEFCON is gold, offering a photo of the gold master disk for the global wargame as provenance. Word is: "After a staggering Five Months worth of beta testing, Defcon has finally gone gold. The master disk has been produced, checked, and sent away for manufacturing. The downloads are ready. We are on schedule for launch at 6.00pm GMT, Friday 29th September. It's all rather exciting."

I was excited about this game from the moment I first heard of it...and then I saw the sreenies Pre-ordered the box as soon as I could, and now I'm just itching to blow up as many millions as possible

Although one thing puzzles me: a lot of reviewers say the game has a high learning curve...but from what I know now it sounds like saying Risk has a high learning curve?

The patches improved on it too. I thought the game was very good for what it was trying to accomplish. It's a VERY complex game.

Really. I'll have to give it another whirl then. I really liked the first game that I was kind of dissapointed with the initial release of the second. Although that 3d globe was downright cool.

Comparisons to Superpower 2: The only way this game can be compared to Superpower 2 is that it deals with conflicts between other nations in a modern setting and using the globe is the main focus of the interface.

I wasn't comparing it though. I was drawing the parallel that DEFCON has an emphasis on using nuclear weapons as well that Super Power 2 also featured them, of which I actually thought the handling of nuclear weapons was done decently.

I'm also willing to bet it will not be initially bug ridden like Superpower 2.

That's why I said it sucked.

Pre-ordered this through Steam the other day and I can't wait to give it a whirl. $10 and I didn't even have to leave my chair to buy it; they are making impulse buying way too easy these days.

Imagine if you could mod Supreme Commander to simulate a 3D version of this. That would rock, rock on!

I know this is off topic, but I've got to say Company of Heroes totally rules.

For the price it may be worth it, but I dont see it as being something I'll play, especially with Company of Heroes out. I tried the "unofficial demo" out the other day to see if this is something I'd play, and it just isn't. Which isnt to say its a bad game, just not my thing.

Even though I'm just about done with PC gaming, I'll probably pre-order this tonight.

I'm trying to get into the whole console thing. So far so good. Within the next 6 months there are only like 2 PC games I want to buy, the rest I can get on my 360 and (eventually) Wii.

Comparisons to Superpower 2

No one's really comparing it: one poster suggested he loves nukes in a game, and there was one reply saying the game sucked.

...Even if I play it only 10-20 times online. It's simple enough to get into and revives fond memories of WOPR/Joshua from Wargames (especially for those who first saw the movie years ago). If I don't like online play there's singleplayer action. The game can be set to real-time (for a very neat office game) or time can be ramped up for quicker action.

No, the story is not as deep as an RPG and the game is not as graphically intense as Prey or Half-Life 2 (or Donkey Kong). Does it have to be? No, and that is not the point.

The example videos easily advertise my expectations of the game.

Comparisons to Superpower 2: The only way this game can be compared to Superpower 2 is that it deals with conflicts between other nations in a modern setting and using the globe is the main focus of the interface. It's not a deep (and yawning) simulator like Superpower 2, and I'm happy for that because it will keep more people playing. I'm also willing to bet it will not be initially bug ridden like Superpower 2.

Finally, it doesn't install StarForce on your system like Superpower 2 does. (Sorry, I just couldn't resist).

Too bad SuperPower 2 sucked. I heard the community really improved upon it, though.

I see there's single player mode vs. AI and multiplayer mode vs other players. Is there multiplayer mode vs AI (co-op)?

Yes.

Great. I just saw a link to a manual posted online and it mentioned "Three or more Human Players recommended" for diplomacy mode. So that basically confirmed it. I didn't see it on their product feature list. They should definitely add a bullet for co-op there.

The real question is, is there an AI vs AI mode.

And yes.

Of course, just set number of players to 0 !

The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?

Easiest and most sound pre-order I have made in a long time.

$10 for something that looks awesome? Yeah, yeah, I'm not going to be CS'ing this one up every night/weekend, but you can't beat the price for something that looks that stylish.

This game is going to be a quick fun impulse buy at $15.. or $10 if you get it now. I doubt it'll be anywhere at SuperPower's calibre even.
